Like Suraya said, Belle in the Disney Animated movie is one of my favorites too. So I feel like the ONCE version had a lot to live up to, and I’m still a bit on the fence about whether she does.
I think for me, the problem is mostly not her so much, as it is Rumpel. Once-verse Belle falls in love with a beast who is so much worse than the animated beast (though he is more human looking, I’ll give Rumpel that :P). So even if the girl’s character is quite similar (wants adventure, loves to read, sees the good behind the surface), what troubles me is she is either looking past a whole lot more bad or she is too naive to see how bad he is. She is there, dusting the super creepy puppets, cutting off the stem of a rose that used to be her betrothed, unaware of what happened. Gaston may have been shallow, those puppets may have been swindled by someone else, but Rumpel wanted to have those bodies in his castle. *shiver*. He’s under a curse, perhaps mad, but….what’s her excuse? All that makes sense is she does not know the gory details of some of his “things”. I don’t hate her but I am really curious to see how Lacey plays out, to see Belle understand his nature more clearly. I know the prop department probably loves them, but those puppets have got to go!

I really wasn’t keen on Belle in S1- I don’t know why exactly, because Belle is like my fav disney princess…or maybe that is why (didn’t want my childhood fav being portrayed in away I may not like) lol.
She has grown on me this season, as has Rumplebelle, I still get frustrated with her sometimes, but I don’t have any problems with her at all, she is just… Belle….. Lacey on the other hand- now that chick is mentally unbalanced & creeps me out now 🙁
Maybe someone else who really dislikes her can shed some light on possible reasons….. 😕Yes, I really don’t care for her either and still hasn’t changed.
But why though?
The way that I view Lacey after finally watching the episode, she is the opposite of Belle. Like how David possessed the qualities opposite of Charming. The curse was supposed to bring that out in their characters. I think still there’s hope we may get Belle back at some point, although it probably won’t happen right away.
I’m actually excited for Lacey/Gold right now b/c we might finally get some sexy time b/t those two. Even if we don’t get some on screen, just point me in the direction of some sexy Lacey/Gold fanfiction and I’ll read it.

I think it was Phee, but sorry if I’m remembering incorrectly. I really think that fit with what we see in Lacey.

April 24, 2013 at 4:30 am #188279surayyaParticipantKFChimera you got the reason for my occasional frustrations with Belle (& occasionally Rumbelle too) summed up exactly!
Disney beast was like a spoiled bully- Rumple is pretty much a crazy, psychopath- yet this Belle still just forgives him time & again for making the wrong choices, disney Belle had to be saved by Beast before she started to see the good in him, this Belle needed a pillow lol …. it also didn’t help matters when she told Hook he was “rotten to the core” for wanting revenge on the man who murdered his love & cut off his hand in cold blood either, that just proved she wasn’t as apt at ‘seeing’ the best in people as I thought they were making her out to be…. So it’s just the context she is sometimes put in, that I personally don’t like, rather than Belle as a character herself 😉
I just hope the same thing doesn’t happen with Ariel- she’s my 2nd favorite princess lolApril 24, 2013 at 4:40 am #188282surayyaParticipant@obisgirl wrote:

For Lacey, The only reason I think she is mentally unbalanced & creeps me out, is because she is the opposite of Belle- she see’s/enjoys the worst in people & her B/F is Rumple (even if she doesn’t know it yet 😉 )….not a good combo in any world lol
I don’t actually dislike Lacey at all, aside from her love of ‘dark’ deeds, she is actually a refreshing change- I personally just don’t like the fact that she enjoys watching a man beat another man with a cane is all 😐April 24, 2013 at 4:49 am #188284kfchimeraParticipantPlease let them make Ariel so cool that no one would ever add her to this list!

April 24, 2013 at 4:54 am #188285obisgirlParticipantMaybe it’s because I’m able to separate the two, but I have no problem with OUAT’s version of Belle.
In Belle’s defense, (because I just watched the episode a few hours ago), this episode was supposed to show the early days of rumbelle. She was taken away from her family and friends with the possibility of never seeing them again. Who wouldn’t cry in a situation like that? If she didn’t show any kind of negative emotion about being separated from her family, that would not be healthy at all. So it’s okay for the girl to cry about that.
But it doesn’t make her weak.
I agree about the context thing. In addition, I think she can not only see the best, but probably it’s opposite too — the worst in people.

Sorry, I obviously didn’t make my point clear enough- I’ll try again, what I meant by that was disney Beast was ‘less’ villainous than Rumple/beast, yet he had to ‘do more’/ prove his intentions more, to gain any real change in Belle’s position/thinking about him. Ie. Beast had to save Belle from Wolves, before she really started to see him differently.
Rumple just had to give Belle a pillow for her to start re-considering him….
It’s just that context thing for me at the end of the day- I don’t think it makes her weak or that they have portrayed her in that way, it’s just hard trying to marry what ‘Belle’ should be like (ie. disney), with the context she is put in on the show….. hope that makes sense! Like I say I dont dislike her, I sometimes just get frustrated with the reactions to/context of situations she & Rumbelle find themselves in.
As I said she has grown on me since S1, when I really didnt like her.April 24, 2013 at 5:41 am #188292angiebelleParticipantI am a huge Belle fan- always have been, since the Disney film came out- and I love the Once version. I don’t think it was the pillow that made her fall for Rumple…it was just the first inking that maybe he had some feelings. She still believed him to be a monster until the moment when she knew he’d intentionally let Robin Hood go.
I think the reason Belle is so insistent that Rumple has good in him is that she can sense the good man he once was. The curse of the Dark One is a big part of Rumple’s evilness- he wasn’t nearly that way until that point. Also, Rumple puts on a show- he’s playing a part, and Belle senses this too- that he is not as heartless as he makes himself out to be. We as the audience know she is right.
