I agree, kids are awkward and sometimes they stick lines in Henry’s mouth that are cringe worthy but I don’t think that’s Henry/Jared’s fault. So for example, the pizza line from The Queen is Dead got a lot of attention here on our forums. Some people thought it was really terrible of Henry and that he needed to grow up and he was being really childish, ect. And while I could see their point of view: my complaint was that it was bad writing. The line fell flat and made me roll my eyes at the writers not Henry.
I think if we get another few season and Henry is allowed to grow (and Jared along with him) the negative feelings will abate.

A lot of the times, I think it is the writing. When the writing is really good, I have no problem with him. I think it’s still too early to call him a bad actor or anything like that. If the series runs long enough, he’ll be able to mature in his craft and get better.
but I understand when Henry’s being mean (especially to Emma), you just want to cry or something. b/c I’m with a lot of people, when he was being mean and snotty to Emma, I just wanted to tell him to back off.

Jared has gotten so much criticism this season and I feel terrible for him. I hope it doesn’t kill his spirit. I think he has a lot of room to grow but he does not ruin the experience of OUAT for me.
As for Henry, I find him illogical but I also think he’s eleven. He does idiotic things, but he’s 11. I am more forgiving than some fans, I think.
I like Henry a lot. I agree with you about the writing – sometimes his character is just not well written. He was also written much more mature than a normal 11 year old would be, probably because he needed to “know more” than the adults to move the story along (at least that was true in S1). Once the curse broke and he was proved correct, it was like the writers didn’t know what to do with him anymore. I loved all the Operation Cobra stuff in S1 – including his interactions with August. But now the issues are more serious and they couldn’t really have him trying to go up against Cora or the Wraith. The adults have to do that. So he is now back to being a normal kid who knows a lot but is still eleven years old. So he gets taken out of dangerous situations, which is necessary. The line about the pizza in NYC gave him an edge to his personality that most fans didn’t like (myself included)- even when he stood up to Regina about being the EQ in S1, he was more direct and not sarcastic.

I really wonder how they intend to grow his character in the future–he’s definitely a “hero” kid. Can you imagine him asking any of his family for dating advice? Ah, I can imagine some pretty funny spoofs along those lines.

People always seem to gang up on the one main kid character in a show- cute kids can automatically be annoying to everyone…but what I really find disturbing is people actually clamoring for Henry to die! When he got smashed in the dream sequence last week, I saw posts from people who were *glad*! That is just messed up! I don’t think Jared is bad at all- I enjoy his character. I’ve noticed people tend to forget how kids think. Yes, Henry does some foolish things, but kids think like that. They are selfish sometimes. They don’t always see the big picture. They can also go the other way and be very insightful. Having spent years working with kids, I can tell you that you would be surprised with what they come up with. They are smarter than people give them credit for.

I don’t see anyone can be glad when a child dies on a show (even in a dream sequence). That is just wrong, I agree. It’s also really extreme too. It is really unfair and unfortunate people hate Henry. Yes, sometimes he can be annoying but clamoring for his death just makes me ill inside.
Can we please switch the subject? Don’t want to feel sick thinking about how people want a kid to die on this show.
April 27, 2013 at 6:44 pm #189163RumplesGirlKeymasterBlue Fairy. Poorly written plot device (if you need her magic to work, it works, if you need it to fail..it fails) OR genuine baddie with an agenda?
The podcasters always go back and forth on this. Daniel, Jeremy and Jenny don’t see why people think Blue has an agenda/is sneaky/ might be “bad” but every time she comes up on a thread, someone will start talking about how they just don’t trust her! So that alone means there is something to this theory.
For a really long time, I thought Blue had her memories during the Curse years and was communicating with August from SB. I don’t think this is true anymore but I still think she’s hiding something. I really need a Blue backstory. Especially because I want to know what she was doing for all those years when Rumple was honing his magic craft.
The other option is that she’s becoming a plot device. When she’s needed, she can do things for the heroes (turn August into a real boy again even though he’s dying; put up a powerful barrier around the bean field making it invisible) but when it serves the storyline, her magic fails (can’t take down a dark barrier field around Gold’s shop, couldn’t put up an invisibility barrier around the town line so no one could crash through, needed her wand to conduct magic but didn’t have and then suddenly did). She’s becoming a pest in my eyes. In The Queen is Dead I thought we finally had confirmation that she was evil, but no. She’d be Cora’d.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"April 27, 2013 at 6:57 pm #189165tiara_roseParticipantI like Henry. I think that the problem with him is that he is so often the wise adult (Magic is bringing the worst out of you) and the smart kid (I find my mum myself in a cursed town and go alone to Boston) that we forget that he is a child who want his happy ending and not that all of his beloved trys to protect him with lying to him. He gets pissed when he sees that his heros are no heros at all or that he is to frightend of everything to reach out for Regina, cause there is so much still broken to exept her. But I have hope for Regina. We see so much of her mother inside of her this season, but we saw some glances of her older self that is so much like Henry. We saw that she was willing to let Henry free go to his Gramps and believes in the return of emma and Snow. She would need a hug and be remind that the way to get Henry back is to behave like her father would do.
Heros don't get their Happy Ending!
April 27, 2013 at 8:53 pm #189187kfchimeraParticipantHow about Sydney Glass? I kind of hated him for being such a tool in all senses of the word. I’m on board for him to be Jafar…if they can get the actor back.

I’m on board with Jafar as well. Even if they can’t Esposito back, I want them to do Aladdian at some point and if they can’t get him back they’ll need a reason why there is no Genie.
I felt bad for Sydney, he was being used by Regina. But the Genie, while being manipulated, made choices without being under the Curse.
