Which Wizard of Oz characters would you like to see portrayed in OUAT and what role do you see them taking in the upcoming episodes (or possibly in season 4)?
Do you see established characters playing the parts (like the way RS played the role of the Beast), or do you see them being there own individual characters?
Also, do you see any characters doubling up? For example; I can see Dorothy and Princess Ozma being amalgamated into one character.
Personally I would like Henry and Dorothy/Ozma to meet in Kansas after he gets taken up by a tornado and dumped there, the same way Dorothy is dumped into Oz. I think it would also be cool if they made Dorothy’s character a bit like Merida from ‘Brave’ (I think her and Henry’s personalities would play well off each other, especially without any adults around to interfere).
I can also see Dorothy’s Kansas being a part of the Land Without Colour, so would be the same place Dr. Frankenstein is from, just a little in the future. This could give them a chance to introduce characters like Dracula, the Mummy, the swamp thing, etc. Henry and Dorothy/Ozma, along with Toto and Eureka could start travelling in order to find a way back to SB/EF/Oz, while the adults try to find them/find out where they’ve gone.
So… what are your thoughts?

Annnnnd the pink glass kitten would be just fun to see.
I expect that they’ll stick mostly to characters that are familiar to a broader audience, though, so I’m not expecting a whole lot from any of the later books–I expect we’ll mostly see those from the Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

March 19, 2014 at 8:57 pm #254290RumplesGirlKeymasterI really like all your ideas, Felie! Though Keb does have a point–the audience has to be somewhat familiar with anything they bring in and that sorta limits it to the 1939 movie.
I have this super wacky theory that Snow is carrying Ozma and that’s why Zelena wants the baby. O_o
I really need the Scarecrow in OUAT (played by David Tennant please and thank you) He’s my favorite!

Disney made a sequel movie in the 1980s that was dead creepy called Return to Oz. It combined characters and themes from the second two books Baum wrote, The Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz, though it changed quite a lot.
Some characters that were in Return to Oz that, because of heightened awareness due to the movie’s existence, we might see:
The Nome King (Roquat the Red), who has a magic belt and turns people into ornaments. Nomes are rock-based creatures.
Billina, a chicken belonging originally to Dorothy’s family farm
Tik-Tok, a wind up robot (thinking/acting machine)
Jack Pumpkinhead, a creature that in the books was built by Ozma and brought to life by Mombi’s powder of life
The Gump, similarly brought to life by the powder
The Wheelers, creatures with wheels for hands and feet.
Mombi, a witch who in the books was given infant Ozma when the Wizard came to Oz and turned her into a boy named Tip. In the movie, she is combined with the vain Princess Langwidere who switches out heads when she’s bored with her present appearance and threatens to take Dorothy’s head too (the princess was a relative of the royal family of Ev–looking up her name as it’s escaped me). In the movie, Ozma is trapped in a mirror.
And lastly, Princess Ozma, rightful ruler of Oz, who, like Dorothy, appears in all the books except one. (Dorothy is absent from The Land of Oz, and Ozma of course is missing from the Wonderful Wizard.)The art in the original Baum books is amazing but he switched artists after the first book; Dorothy’s dark braids became a blonde bob cut in later books and there’s even a picture of her meeting a statue of herself as she was illustrated in the Wonderful Wizard in one of the later books.
Ozma is always portrayed as a dark-haired fairy, perhaps slightly older than Dorothy but not much. Return to Oz portrayed Ozma as blonde and Dorothy as a brunette, probably to keep with the popular version from the 1939 movie.
I’ll be interested to see how either of the girls is portrayed, if they are, in Once.
But since a) Disney was involved in the sequel, though it wasn’t very popular–partly because it was so creepy, and b) the movie introduced these characters to a wider audience than those who actually had read the books, I think there’s a greater likelihood we’ll see these characters than any others from later books.

March 20, 2014 at 12:56 am #254314KebParticipantI think it’s less likely that A&E will dig into the recent prequel that Disney did, but possible. (For one thing, it wasn’t that great a movie, for another, it had its own origin story for the WWW, and lastly, being so recent and such a departure from the books, I don’t see A&E using it as a basis. But who knows.)

March 20, 2014 at 7:55 am #254330sharonParticipantI’m sure someone else has pointed this out, but Emma and Henry? Auntie Em and Uncle Henry? Weird coincidence, no? I wonder if Snow White & Prince Charming’s second child will be named Dorothy…and just like they needed to sacrifice Emma for the greater good… this baby will have to be sacrificed too. Maybe growing up in Kansas with her Auntie (sister) Em and Uncle (Nephew) Henry… all of this so one day Dorothy can defeat the Wicked Witch and save them all. Somehow this is also supposed to tie into Aurora and Phillip’s baby too… so who knows. I just think Emma and Henry’s names are a really weird coincidence to just be a coincidence.

Maybe a little bit of both?
I think there was a Dorothy, years ago, she’s the reason Jefferson couldn’t get the slippers for Rumple, because she’d already used them to get home. I think we may see her in flashback, and also potentially in present day, as an older woman. But I think Emma’s role will be very Dorothy-esque, with her searching to find her place and her true home.
I think there was an actual Scarecrow in the past too, and maybe we’ll also see him in flashback. But I think Rumple may be the present day representation of him, because judging by the final scene in 313, he may well have lost his mind.
The Tin Man I’m considering slightly differently, because I think he may actually be Walsh. The guy makes furniture, he works with wood, and they like linking the characters’ present day occupations with their storybook character persona. He was pretending to be in love with Emma, which could tie in with his lack of a heart, and perhaps Zelena made him a deal whereby he’d be able to find his heart/love if he worked for her, which accounts for his Monkey-ness in between his Tin-ness and Human-ness.
If they wanted to also have a separate present day character to parallel with Tin Man, like they may do with other characters, then I guess that could be Neal perhaps, because he lost all 3 people he loved, like he had his heart ripped out, and then vowed to get his heart back by finding them all again.
The Lion, again I think there was an actual lion in the past, but if they’re gonna parallel a present day character with his story, I think it could be Hook. He’s been trying to make strides to do better, but I think he’s still stuck mid-redemption, where he’s not overcome his pirate-ness, he’s still acting out of selfish interests, and he’s still telling half truths, but over the course of S3B we may see him find the true courage to be a better, more honest man.
Those 3 – Rumple, Neal, Hook – are already linked together in the story, and each of them have been in the position of partnering with or guiding Emma, so giving each of them 1 of those 3 Oz characters to parallel, alongside Emma’s parallel of Dorothy, would be quite fitting IMO.
As for the Wizard, I’d love to see him play a role in present day as well as in the past. Not sure who could parallel him in present day…maybe Henry, somehow? He’s lost his “magic” of being a believer, and the Wizard had no actual magic. The Wizard did eventually help people, including offering to help Dorothy get home, and I suspect Henry may have a vital role in helping break the Curse, and he’s definitely a factor in Emma’s finding her true home.
I’d like to see Glinda in both past and present, in the past doing battle with Zelena, and in the present helping the SBers do battle with Zelena.
I dunno if they’ll introduce lesser characters in any significant way, but I sort of doubt it, because it’d just add up to being too many new characters, even if some of them are only seen in one ep in flashbacks. It could get overwhelming pretty quickly. I would love to see a scene where Dwarves come face to face with Munchkins, but dunno how they’d work that, assuming the Munchkins are in Oz and staying there. Maybe if Glinda pops over to SB, she can bring a couple with her? Actually, now I’m thinking of it, maybe Snow can parallel Glinda somehow? Snow and her Dwarves, Glinda and her Munchkins. Glinda watched over Dorothy, and Snow watches over Emma.
March 20, 2014 at 10:48 am #254366FelieParticipantI had a dream last night about this. It sort of switched between me reading a story book about it, to it then being playing out in my dream… it was weird;
Years ago Regina and RS use a tornado-portal to sent a child to an unknown land in order to punish her mother, his former pupil, Zelena. Zelena searches for years to find her daughter, but comes to the conclusion that the only people who can find her are the two who sent her away in the first place. So, in order to get the SB gang to help her track down her daughter Zelena breaks into Gold’s shop, steals the tornado-portal thingy, and sends Henry to the same, unknown location, in the same way Regina and RS sent her daughter away.
Zelena’s tornado-portal drops Henry off in the LWOC, where he meets Dorothy. Now they (Zelena and the SB gang) must work together in order to track down both children. This is Zelena’s plan all along, as well as to punish Regina and RS for what they did.
Last night was a very productive night for me, dream wise, because then the dream sort of switched to another storyline, and after I woke I elaborated on it to make a weird story; Zelena, caged, brews up a memory potion for Henry (under Regina’s orders). Before they give the potion to Henry they make Zelena drink it to prove it’s safe to give him. When Zelena doesn’t die they give the potion to Henry, but as soon as he drinks it both he and Zelena collapse. Zelena wanted this all along, as the potion was a memory-dream elixir which allows for her and Henry (who now remembers his life in SB) to meet up in some kind of dream world where she can show Henry, first-hand, all the atrocities Regina has done throughout her life.
When he awakens he not only remembers who Regina is but now knows exactly what she’s done throughout her life, making him unable to even look her in the eye any more. Zelena tells Regina that the only way Henry will forget what he’s seen is to take away his memories of his time in SB (again). Now Regina must choose – does she take away Henry’s memories of all her atrocities, thus taking away his memories of being her son too, or does she let him keep his memories even though he’ll never be able to forget what she is and as a result will probably never see her as anything other than a monster.

I think a magical colour-changing kitten would be a great way to send a message to someone who was trapped in the LWOC.
And yeah, they’ll probably stay away from most of the obscure characters from the books, perhaps only making small references as Easter eggs for hardcore Oz fans.

I actually think Matt Smith would make a good Scarecrow… David Tennant’s talents would best be demonstrated by him playing a more sinister character imo… Any ideas Who… 😀
