So we know Belle has lost her enchanted forest memories. What I want to know and what they have given us very little to go on is what is Belle’s Storybrooke identity? Does she have one or was she in the asylum all those years as a complete blank slate stripped of her old memories but never given new ones? They haven’t even given us her alternate name. Does she have any memories of why she was in the asylum? What does she think happened that night she went over the line?

I do hope that she actually has false memories as I think that would be a more interesting story than having her be a complete amnesiac.

She should have some memories at least from her Storybrooke life, albeit there’s not much to remember. Most memories would be from sitting in her cell in the asylum. But I thought she should at least recognize Mr. Gold as Mr. Gold. Shouldn’t she at least remember Mad Hatter coming to tell her to find Gold and that he would protect her?

Yeah, Belle should at least remember meeting Mr. Gold in 1×22. However, I think the fact that she had just lost her FTL identity and witnessed Mr. Gold use magic to heal her arm is what has caused her to freak out. She was really creeped out when he kissed her and when he talked to her about charming her cup with magic. She demanded he stop talking about magic and then smashed the teacup. Really, though, who can blame her? In his desperation, Mr. Gold didn’t give much consideration to how strange or frightening Belle without her FTL memory would find magic and intimacy with a sorcerer old enough to be her father (well, actually old enough to be her great-great-great-great grandfather if you consider he is 300-years-old).

Well, I know she’ll remember being in the asylum. I meant does she have false memories of a past that never happened as the other characters do- like how David had childhood memories of reading Alice in Wonderland.

Yes, I agree that if she did remember meeting Mr. Gold, seeing him act the way he did that night would still freak her out. He needs to be a little more understanding- it’s going to take a lot to win Belle back over, which is what I think he is going to have to do to get her memories back.
