I just came up with a theory. Well, barely. Speculation. An idea. I was thinking in horror movie terms and that people aren’t always who they think they are. If Doctor Whale being Frankenstein was too easy, what if it wasn’t? I can’t remember if Rumple called Whale victor in Storybrooke, but if he didn’t? What if Whale is not victor, but his brother? Whale is he monster. He killed his brother. They’re twins. Whale is tricking everyone.
Gold Definetly called Whale “Victor” in the pawn shop at the end.

How would monster Whale know of the bet Frankenstein made with Rumpel? How would he know that if he brought Daniel back to life he had a chance to earn Regina’s help? He wouldn’t unless the Whale we know is the Frankenstein we saw in the episode.

But I’m fairly convinced it’s a new character because of the scars on his hand, we haven’t seen anyone like that. Or maybe he had some miraculous, magic plastic surgery and then it could be anyone. 😐

I really like the Jekyll/Hyde theory. Frankenstein could have accidentally poisoned his brother, killing him. So he dedicates his life to finding a way to bring him back, only when he does, he’s not quite the same. We saw that Daniel still had parts of him remaining, and then he was also a monster. So the brother could be Jekyll while the Frankenstein’s Monster part of him is Hyde.

Loving this theory. Having Dr Frankenstein and Dr Jekyll being brothers, then Victor’s experiments turning his brother into Mr Hyde would be a perfect fit. Maybe the two doctors were working on some sort of research together, and that’s what led to one of them dying.

We know that Whale trying to bring his brother back happens after Dorothy goes back to Kansas – hence after the Wizard takes off in the hot air balloon (movie – not sure how the book goes as I haven’t read it). What if he died trying to get back to his home land. I don’t mean Kansas like Dorothy, but his home land with Franky. We know the writers like to change the stories a little, so perhaps he wasn’t from the same land as Dorothy, but they were both just looking to get back to their particular homes.
Just a fun thought – perhaps the Wizard of Oz hints weren’t directed at the character we thought =)

My guess, seeing as his brother will have someone else’s heart, I’d say his brother might somehow tie in with the story of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Normally I wouldn’t pose this hypothesis but seeing as we’ve introduced the idea of science being a greater power than magic, I’m guessing sci-fi stories are open as possibilities now. Along with fables, fairy-tales, legends & mythology.
😮 I can see that happening on the show.
