There is a new teaser about Dr. Whale’s identity.
We know everyone is excited to find out Dr Whale’s identity, and we have a small teaser for you. A trusted friend shared it with us, so you can be sure it’s true.
Our source tells us… “Dr Whale’s FTL counterpart will definitely surprise everyone. Nobody has guessed who he is as far as I have seen. It’s certainly on par with Rumplestiltskin being the Beast and Red being the Wolf and some things will make sense with his reveal.”
http://oncenews.net/dr-whales-identity-exclusive-teaser/According to this teaser, it’s possible no one has managed to correctly guess Dr. Whale’s secret identity. Whoever he is though, it’s going to be big.
Also, from the OUaT “Untold Stories” ap for Facebook, we have a few more hints about Dr. Whale’s secret FTL identity:
Dr. Whale has:
-an inflated sense of self
-Classic “god complex”
-Frames himself as a victor in all conflicts
-Feels persecuted and misunderstood – paranoia?According to wikipeia,
A god complex is an unshakable belief characterized by consistently inflated feelings of personal ability, privilege, or infallibility. A person with a god complex may refuse to admit the possibility of error or failure, even in the face of complex or intractable problems or difficult or impossible tasks, or may regard personal opinions as unquestionably correct
A new theory is beginning to take root. Perhaps his name “Whale” refers to his ego being as big as a whale. Can you think of anyone from a fairytale, legend, or myth who has an over-inflated ego?
I can think of Peter Pan. He thought very highly of himself, always thought he could win, never thought he could be wrong, felt misunderstood when the Lost Boys chose to leave with Wendy.
Also, the wikipedia entry on Peter describes him as being:
mainly an exaggerated stereotype of a boastful and careless boy. He is quick to point out how great he is, even when such claims are questionable (such as when he congratulates himself for Wendy’s successful reattachment of his shadow)….Peter has a nonchalant, devil-may-care attitude, and is fearlessly cocky when it comes to putting himself in danger. Barrie writes that when Peter thought he was going to die on Marooner’s Rock, he felt scared, yet he felt only one shudder run through him when any other person would have felt scared up until death. With his blissful unawareness of the tragedy of death, he says, “To die will be an awfully big adventure”.
Also, we have a few clues from the Singlebrooke dating video spoof.
– Looking for a good time
– Delightfully mysterious
-Good at making friends.
-Didn’t want any “stuck-ups” or “prudes”
-“Sparks will fly.” –Dr. Whale.
-Doctor.Peter Pan certainly could fly, was always looking to have fun, and was great at making friends. The mysterious part is that Peter Pan was a bit of a creeper lurking outside the Darling’s nursery (though the mystery probably just refers to Dr. Whale’s secret identity).
I’m not sure how being doctor fits it, except that perhaps for the irony that he had a lot of responsibility, when in fact, he was a perpetual child in Neverland. His curse in Storybrooke could be being forced to be an adult with responsibility.
Also, it’s possible his womanizing ways are a manifestation of a Peter Pan’s balking at Wendy’s idea that everyone grows up, gets married and settles down one day. Peter Pan probably considered Wendy to be a bit “stuck up” (when he himself is) and thought of her as a “prude” for not wanting to swim with the mermaids.
I’m probably over-analyzing this way too much, and am probably wrong. I’m looking forward to finding out soon!

September 9, 2012 at 1:25 pm #153700marilouParticipantsomeone, somewhere online I don’t remember when suggested that Dr. Whale could be Muchu (Mulan’s colourfull sidekick).
September 9, 2012 at 2:35 pm #153705PriceofMagicParticipantWould Dr Whale be Peter Pan? When the series first aired they didn’t have the rights to Peter Pan so they couldn’t use any of the characters.Although they said they had Hook ready and waiting for if they did get the rights, it wouldn’t have made sense to set up Whale as Peter Pan only to find out that they didn’t get the rights. Does that make sense?
I’m also wondering if the mysterious blonde patient mentioned in Archie’s file could be Tinkerbell.
Back to guessing who Whale is: Possibly King Triton from the little Mermaid.
-an inflated sense of self- As King of the Merpeople, he would consider himself highly important.
-Classic “god complex”- Has a negative view of humans and assumes that his opinion is the right one and everyone else’s view of humans eg Ariel’s is completely wrong.
-Frames himself as a victor in all conflicts- What King wouldn’t exaggerate his victories to make himself more respected by his people.
-Feels persecuted and misunderstood – paranoia?- Assumes that all humans want to hunt down the merpeople. We all assume Triton is going to be some old guy but what if they twisted it to make him young.
“Feels persecuted and misunderstood” could also suggest that he is being hunted down for a percieved slight against someone else. Maybe he was trying to help someone and it all went wrong and everyone thought he’d deliberately set out to hurt that person.

I suppose I just don’t see the issue. Peter Pan certainly would be iconic, and the fact Kitsis and Horowitz didn’t have the rights to the story in season 1 actually helps explain why they waited to reveal his identity until season 2. They just recently obtained the rights to all of the characters from Peter Pan, not just Captain Hook, in time for S2. They may have been especially mysterious and vague with his character details, not giving too many hints, thus leaving open the possibility that he could be any number of characters (just in case they didn’t obtain the legal rights to the tale).
I’m not claiming he has to be Peter Pan, but I don’t think we can rule out the possibility just because of the timing of the reveal. If anything, I think this adds to the case of him being Peter. Kitsis and Horowitz have said the story is one of their all-time favorite fairy-tales. It just makes sense that they waited until now to reveal his identity if he is in fact Peter.
When it comes to the possibility of Dr. Whale being Triton, I agree that certain characteristics you wrote about fit pretty well. Yet, there are also the other characteristics from the spoof dating video to consider.
– Looking for a good time
– Delightfully mysterious
-Good at making friends.
-Didn’t want any “stuck-ups” or “prudes”
-“Sparks will fly.” –Dr. Whale.
-Doctor.How does it make sense for Triton being such a player and a womanizer? I also don’t think Triton was that great at having fun or at making friends. I think there a quite a few loose ends to consider.
I’m not sure what to make of Mushu. It’d certainly be entertaining. Lol! 😀

September 9, 2012 at 2:55 pm #153710antbeeParticipantI have no idea how accurate this is since the origin is from Tumblr http://officerparker.tumblr.com/post/31160015287%5D/url%5D, but
Dr Whale’s FTL counterpart will definitely surprise everyone. Nobody has guessed who he as far as I have seen. It’s certainly on par with Rumple being the Beast and Red being the Wolf and some things will make sense with his reveal.
That’s interesting if this is true.
I guess that rules out my guess of Peter Pan, but I’m still sticking with it for now because of the introduction of Captain Hook.
Would Dr Whale be Peter Pan? When the series first aired they didn’t have the rights to Peter Pan so they couldn’t use any of the characters.Although they said they had Hook ready and waiting for if they did get the rights, it wouldn’t have made sense to set up Whale as Peter Pan only to find out that they didn’t get the rights. Does that make sense?
That does seem like a good point, but I think they knew ahead of time that while they couldn’t get the rights for Peter Pan in the first season, if the show was successful enough to come back for a second season, they would have little to no problem securing the rights then for Peter Pan. If the show doesn’t come back for a second season, then they just never reveal who Dr. Whale is or just tell people that he was someone else or that they wanted him to be a certain character but the rights never worked out that way viewers can work out the mystery without them directly saying so to cover their own butts.
So I think they made Dr. Whale’s identity one of the big mysteries of Season 1, and this also served the purpose of adding another mystery to ponder during the hiatus instead of viewers just focusing in on the Henry’s father mystery. Of course, maybe they only planned on bringing in Captain Hook, or someone else besides Dr. Whale will be Peter.
I’m also wondering if the mysterious blonde patient mentioned in Archie’s file could be Tinkerbell.
I think they did say that we would see her later on, so she definitely fits. I saw a lot of guesses that it could be Alice because of Jefferson rescuing Belle from the secret asylum, which also works, but I’m not sure they’ll have Jefferson reunited with his wife so soon.
ETA:
Why couldn’t Dr. Whale be Peter Pan? Peter Pan certainly would be iconic, and it’d actually help explain why the executive producers didn’t reveal his identity until season 2. Horowitz and Kitsis were waiting to acquire the rights to the story from the children’s’ hospital in London and said the tale is one of their all-time favorites. (They did just recently obtained the rights to all of the characters from Peter Pan, not just Captain Hook). The executive producers might have been especially mysterious and vague with his character, not giving too many hints, thus leaving open the possibility that he could be any number of characters (just in case they didn’t obtain the legal rights to the tale). I’m not claiming he has to be Peter Pan, but I don’t think we can rule it out just because of the timing of the reveal. If anything, I think this adds to the case of him being Peter. The more I think about it, I think the name “Whale” has to do with a literal sea creature, and more to do with the size of his over-inflated ego than anything else. It just makes sense.
Hahaha, posting at the same time. Yes, this was basically what I was trying to get at. If they get canceled, they can give hints to viewers who really want to know who he was going to be. If they get renewed, they’re likely a big enough hit that they can secure the rights without any problems.

inflated sense of self: check! (he says he comes from a very important and reputable family)
God complex: hell yeah! (obsessed with creating life)
feels persecuted and misunderstood (do I need to remind you of the carnage that ensues)
so yeah, 3 out of the 4 characteristics check out really well.

how would that be? (I am not at all familiar with the story of Oz… something about Kansas, a tornado and cool looking shoes.)
September 10, 2012 at 2:30 am #153730lilredParticipantSo…did Dr. Whale lose an arm? Is it in the cooler? That seems to be what everyone is jumping to right now.
But, the green screen on his arm is only covering a section. I’m wondering if he’s morphing and possibly hiding his arm in the other shots: scales maybe? -
