If Regina used the magic portals in the hat to pull Dr. Frankenstein out of his world in hopes that he could bring Daniel back to life for her- I could buy that. It would give a reason for such an out of place character to be present. I’m not entirely on board, but at least I found a way that the theory would make sense!
That was my major sticking point too, I just couldn’t figure out how they could weave him into the story. But it’d make perfect sense if Regina enlists him in a desperate attempt to bring back Daniel.

That’s probably why we haven’t seen Daniel around. Even if Regina brought on Dr. Whale/Frankenstein to bring Daniel back to life, I don’t think the reanimated corpse would be “Daniel.” He could’ve came back as a zombie, and the poor guy ended up dying twice 🙁

Here’s an awesome photo from Tumblr of the Dr. Whale = Dr. Frankenstein theory:
This is too funny…look what I just found. Frankenstein, Missouri is 12 miles east of Jefferson City, Missouri. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frankenstein,_Missouri

Argh- much as it pains me to say it, I’m not hating it totally now either 😉
Still would rather he not be for reasons I’ve stated elsewhere, but so far Whale ‘fits’ & if that continues to be the case it really doesn’t matter ‘who’ he is I suppose.

It’s all starting to fall in place 😀 Guess Regina wants to be the Bride of Frankenstein (the bride of the creature)

If Dr. Frankenstein tries to reanimate Daniel’s body per Regina’s request, I think it’ll be a botched experiment. Regina said in S1 that there was no bringing back the person she’d lost, which makes me think she tried and then failed miserably.

Exactly. Daniel’s reanimated corpse won’t really be the “true” Daniel. He’ll be a monster whom they have to kill again or who let’s himself die, as happened in the novel.
We may see Daniel’s true soul appear to Regina in SB as a ghost, which would make a highly interesting contrast with what happen in FTL that was.

Now the The Thinker is suppose to represent Dante, at the Gates of Hell, in Dante’s work A Divine Comedy. Mary Shelly – Frankenstein, exert from chapter 5: Oh! no mortal could support the horror of that countenance. A mummy again endued with animation could not be so hideous as that wretch. I had gazed on him while unfinished he was ugly then; but when those muscles and joints were rendered capable of motion, it became a thing such as even Dante could not have conceived!
As well, there is a rockbilly/surf band out there, from Portugal, called Dr. Frankenstein. They released a CD in 2005 called The Cursed Tapes. One of the tracks is called “The Mad Thinker”.
