On a side note – Tail + Whale, to me = an aquatic episode. Not Puss in Boots. Since they’ve already shot the first four or five episodes, and have yet to cast an Ariel, I’m going to go with Dr. Whale NOT having anything to do with The Little Mermaid. I do think he may have something to do with water.

That could be the link to his name, that he is a descendent/heir of this family. His hatred for Regina (seen in the first season 2 clip) could be rooted in her changing him into an animal form (with a tail). An actual giant whale (Monstro) could make sense. But wouldn’t they have dropped a scene where there is some type of natural tension between him, August, or Mario? Especially in Return. Could take up to even half a second but at least plant the idea…It could be Puss in Boots….or any number of fairytale characters who were turned into animals.
Wonder what happened between him and Regina? How could he have gotten on her bad side?
I keep going back to this whole lecher characteristic. What literary character was a complete lech? Must have blocked a lot of them out….

She only seems to act in the best interest of FTL as a whole, rather than for anyone person, so if he had been a bad guy who was out to make bad things happen, she wouldn’t want to comfort him & she have told him to run well he could cause we all remember who you are now, just like she told Regina to.
I agree that as he was in a position of power, yet still firmly under Regina’s thumb, that he is connected to Regina or her family in some way- to me Puss in Boots belonging to a Miller is the best direct connection we’ve had so far, as Regina as far as we know hasn’t had much or any dealings with Gep & Pinno per say.
The Cheshire cat could work as he’d be connected via Wonderland to Regina, whom we know for sure has A, Been to wonderland at least twice. B, Had dealings with the Queen of Hearts & C, has history with the Mad Hatter.
Also Whale may not = Large marine mammal Whale, but hit or beat- as in “He came upstairs & whaled me”.
Or
Whale is a word that describes someone who spends a lot of money in a casino. Whales are also referred to as high rollers.
A gambler making unusually large bets, not necessarily a very good player
Name given to the very high roller, somebody who wagers thousands of dollars on single bet.Im willing to bet that if the name has anything to do with who he is in FTL or where ever he comes from it has nothing to do with marine mammals & more to do with the more obscure meanings for the name.
Personally A gambler would fit nicely with the Puss in Boots theory I think.
I’m not 100% sold on who Dr Whale is but I will be VERY interested to finally find out who & what he is lol 🙂 Its only been bugging me since ep 3 😆

Dr Whale could be a play on words- as in one of the fairy children who brought medicine/healing to FTL.
We know we are going down the Merlin/wizards/King Arthur rd in S2, so this also fits 😉September 20, 2012 at 10:47 am #154155SlurpeezParticipantAlso, I read on Tumblr that Mark Isham released a photo of the OUAT SCORE FOR SEASON 2 EPISODE 1 ON HIS INSTAGRAM WITH A PIECE TITLED “Monster With a Heart of Gold”! I haven’t actually seen the reported photo, but if that’s true, it’s amazing beyond belief. Could that be referring to Dr. Whale or perhaps even Rumpel? 😮

September 20, 2012 at 2:58 pm #154161TheGoldenKeyParticipantThe word whale can mean so many things. It can mean huge, it can mean monstrous. Spelled “wail” it can mean to wail as in a wolf’s wail.

It makes me think that Mr. Gold and Dr. Whale (who could be Frankenstein’s monster) are linked as in Rumpel created the monster of Frankenstein."That’s how you know you’ve really got a home. When you leave it, there’s this feeling that you can’t shake. You just miss it." Neal Cassidy

September 20, 2012 at 10:28 pm #154174hjbauParticipantIsn’t Rumpel just the monster with the heart of Gold?
September 21, 2012 at 4:31 am #154201marilouParticipantI agree with hjbau. In the episode “Skin Deep” he calls himself a monster and “gold” is a play on his storybrook name and the fact that he turns straw into gold.
