Well, Whale could still ‘consume’ Pinnochio at some point.
Perhabs he captures him and goes- “Hahaa! You’ll be food for the fishes now, woodman !” 😆
And then Pinnochio trows some pepper on him too make him sneeze, and escapes…pff.. ‘xcuse me, my imagination runs away with me !
[adrotate group="5"]May 2, 2013 at 7:53 pm #190711PanTheManParticipantso this science vs. magic debate that GOAT is re-sparking has me thinking.
Dr. Whale could be Dr. Frankenstein and the Wizard of Oz. His technology has had a very Oz feel to it stylistically. Dorothy was ALSO from a land without color – though that was the movie. Whale also has personality traits in common with the Wizard. example: high on himself and his work, but fake and less than honorable.
Also, could Rumple be the Wicked Witch of the West? Or, if Tamara stole his powers and got green skin, she’d be the WWW. They’ve been hinting at Oz for a while. I feel as though many worlds are about to collide in the coming seasons. If Regina’s fail safe works and not everyone gets out of storybrook, i could see the characters being scattered in different worlds. Some being sent to oz, maybe?

Pan, I think an Oz story arc would be amazing and just broaden the possibilities in plots and characters. As cool as Rumple is, I think he is too many characters in one already, so I would like to see a new WWW – like Tamara, as you said.
We’ve seen non-fairytale characters like Lancelot and Frankenstein of course, so it is possible we will see more in the future. There might be more, but it’s 3 in the morning, so my brain isn’t exactly at optimum speed 😀
Characters scattered in different worlds is a great idea. I think it will happen, especially there were three beans in that pod that Regina was harvesting in her office.

May 3, 2013 at 7:57 pm #190906storybrookegirlParticipantI definitely like this idea, because we’re seeing some Whale characteristics that might be unnecessary unless he were someone besides just Frankenstein. Like, where’d the whole skeeving on women thing come from? That, and his whole steampunk vibe, really say “Wizard of Oz” to me.
Idea based on that: If Whale is Oz, maybe Tamara USED to be the WWW. He helped Dorothy steal her powers, leaving her “quite human,” and desperate to steal some back. And she doesn’t know he’s in Storybrooke, because he’s not in the book, but when she finds out they’ll have a showdown.
May 3, 2013 at 8:04 pm #190908MysteryKat25ParticipantAt the time I was under the impression that the wizard of oz thing was a misdirect for that ep (even though the promo gave away it was Frankenstein, grr) BUT that info came from Jane Espenson who has also said that she learns new things in the writer’s room every day and isn’t always told some of the big over-arcing stuff until necessary so it wouldn’t surprise me if they had her go that route not knowing just how much of an impact it would have later.
There IS a name connection between the two, as VICTOR Fleming directed The Wizard of Oz, much like Jacob WHALE directed Frankenstein where the lead character is named Victor. Could be coincidence, could have helped with the red herrings in The Doctor, or it could be an eventual combining of the two. I’m not sure yet but wanted to throw that out there for anybody who was looking for connections with the idea.

Holy poop! VICTOR WHALE coming from Victor Fleming and Jacob Whale… I’M SOLD! He’s definitely the Wizard of Oz on top of Dr. Frankenstein.

Glad somebody likes the idea! I’ve also been wondering why we saw Whale again but in such a small way. Why bring the actor out just to use him for Rumple to look bad in front of Bae? Why not a random extra? (It would have served the same purpose). I have 2 ideas:
1) To remind us of him and show that he’s still around (especially with all this science vs magic stuff going on at the moment…
or
2) They’re setting him up for next season maybe with something either relating to the science vs magic debate and/or more Frankenstein story and possibly some Wizard of Oz stuff if we ever get there. (I think S3 might be a little packed with Neverland stuff, but I hope we get Oz at some point!
I really feel like they wanted to remind us that he’s around and there’s more story to tell with him since a lot of people have come and gone and never been seen again. As random and as short as his recent scene was, it does help since a lot of people are frustrated knowing that characters we’ve seen before should still be in town but we haven’t seen them at all.
For instance, on a recent podcast H&K said about other characters we haven’t seen that Abigail & Frederick are together and happy, we haven't seen it but we know they're off somewhere in SB together – I say SB since nobody can leave of course, but the point was that they did get back together; just as I think we can safely assume that Cinderella, Thomas, & Alexandra are off somewhere too
So I think it was a nice albeit random change to show us Whale so he’s at least been on the brain recently rather than saying we haven’t seen him in however long but now he’s huge (if he does, in fact, play an important part in another storyline etc etc.)
I thought it was an interesting connection though – I don’t believe in coincidences much with OUAT but it would tie in nicely since both guys are named Victor and have something to do with directing the biggest version of the movie for the respective characters….just seems too good not to use (and if it it’s used, then it’s a super red herring since it would totally fit).
It could be like before with the typewriter – we think we’ll have to wait forever, August shows it to us after a tiny rant and: it’s a typewriter….we see it again, we aren’t shown what’s inside, we theorize for WEEKS, he finally opens it up and…it’s a typewriter. What if the “misdirect” toward Whale being the wizard wasn’t exactly a misdirect at all?
I’m all for crazy theories as long as they are based on something plausible so I’m happy to help anybody find random connections if I come across them. With these writers we can’t rule anything out too easily, and goodness knows just because he’s already one character doesn’t mean he’s not another. So far it seems to point mostly to Frankenstein but who knows where they’re planning to go with it next? (And I definitely want to see a wizard!) I’ll be honest I wasn’t too fond of Dr. Whale before but I like him now that he’s Dr. Frankenstein (and I hate that whole story) so if anybody can turn stuff on its ear and come out super awesome even from not-so-well-loved material…it’s the OUAT writers.

May 13, 2013 at 1:36 pm #193738PanTheManParticipantHim showing up briefly in the 2 part finale just to kiss Rumple’s boot, I think, TRULY was a little reminder that Dr. Whale is still around and that they have plans for him.
May 17, 2013 at 6:17 pm #195148jadeParticipantIt would be great, if dr.Whale were the Wizard of OZ. I have imagined him as the wizard from the beginning of the second season.
May 29, 2013 at 3:15 pm #196486PanTheManParticipantI’m thinking that Dr. Whale will invent a machine that can help the characters travel between worlds. Technology at it’s finest.
