Except it is not. You can head canon away. The writers don’t get to decide canon. Canon does exist. It just isn’t what you think it is. Canon is the material that is officially accepted as canon. The show is what is officially accepted as canon. I am done with this conversation. I think you are completely wrong, just like you think i am wrong. Let’s agree to disagree and move on.

I’ll just put that in here:
@Lisa_B012 we're overseeing. Marvel comic will be canon.

January 23, 2016 at 8:23 am #315453RumplesGirlKeymasterThe writers get to dictate what is canon, but the problem is that it often changes. For the 2nd graphic novel, Camelot was its own realm and Jefferson traveled to it and met Grace’s future mother. Is only part of that (Grace’s mother) still canon now that we’ve seen Camelot in the show and it’s not its own realm? I have no problem with the novels ect being canon, but it needs to be consistent.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"January 23, 2016 at 8:58 am #315461PriceofMagicParticipantI think deleted scenes can be canon if the only reason they were cut was for timing. They don’t change the story dramatically but they might enhance certain aspects eg In Thor: the dark world, there is a deleted scene where Thor is speaking to his mother about Loki and whether or not she regrets teaching Loki magic. Frigga replies no as Thor and Odin “cast large shadows” and she wanted to help Loki “find some sun for himself”. This scene doesn’t alter any of the events storywise in either Thor movies but it does enhance why Loki is so driven to do what he does.
An example where deleted scenes perhaps shouldn’t be considered canon is X-Men: days of future past where Rogue was supposed to have a bigger role but her scenes were cut and thus we got the movie that we did. A “Rogue cut” of the movie was later released on DVD with the deleted Rogue scenes put back into the film which IMO actually made for the better movie but having her scenes in the film changed the story considerably (though did give an explanation for why the sentinels were as lethal as they were). It’s up to the audience to decide whether they want the original cut or the Rogue cut to be canon but the original cut did come first.
With OUAT, it’s difficult because you get some deleted scenes that should’ve been in show but were cut for timing eg Emma talking to Henry after Neal’s death. You get some scenes that are more or less useless or their absence doesn’t affect the story in any way eg Rumple taking something from rip van winkle. Then you get some deleted scene which would contradict something later on in the show but then don’t matter because they were deleted scenes eg Originally Rumple’s dad wasn’t going to be any more than some guy that tried to abandon Rumple before he was killed but this was later changed to Pan being Rumple’s dad.
IMO whether or not a deleted scene is canon depends on if it was only cut for timing reasons and if it enhances certain aspects of the story without changing the story dramatically.

I don’t care what the writers think canon is, they don’t get to decide it. Isn’t there a deleted scene where about the swan necklace that cannot be canon? I haven’t seen them so i am not sure, but i remember people talking about it not making sense. Deleted scenes cannot be canon because of the contradictions in them
That’s the problem. Cut scenes are cut. The others have offered examples where the deleted scenes and comics contradict the show as well. The show contradicts itself enough without unnecessarily adding in outside material that the vast majority of the audience has not seen. It is much more valid to describe canon, in my opinion, as that which most people have seen and would accept as happening on the show then to site outside sources that most people have not seen. Adam may want to fix the mistakes he made on the show by answering questions on twitter, but i shouldn’t have to know anything outside of the tv episodes to know what is going on. He doesn’t get to try and fix it via comments.
January 23, 2016 at 11:54 am #315478Bar FarerParticipantWe saw in 1×18 that Leopold doesn’t know who Cora is while in 3×18 we saw they were engaged before – contadiction.
We saw in 1×02 that the curse has to have a price, yet Snow and Hook conveniently found a loophole for that – contradiction.
We are thought that dead is dead no matter what, yet everyone goes to the underworld to save Hook – contradiction
According to what you’re saying, those instances should not be considered canons because of contradiction.
Like I said, canon is not an opinion, it’s a fact decided by the creators.

Let’s not get toooooo bogged down in this conversation, at least not in this thread. It is the filming thread after all, used for spoilers of what’s going on on set. Feel free to make another thread for the canon debate, by all means.
