Sorry I meant to reply earlier. Jane Espenson tweeted that Maurice got his land and title through fighting under someone of power. I can’t find the tweet now though unfortunately.
I didn’t think Maurice was a king. It sounds like he was an earl making Belle an earl’s daughter. If that is the case, then who’s kingdom were they under? So far, there is George/Charming and Snow’s kingdom, Regina’s/Leopold’s kingdom and Cinderella’s kingdom.

Keeper of FelixI think Gerhardt is a new character. We know Belle’s father went by Maurice in FTL, not by a different name. Also, I think Gerhardt might just possibly be a “fake name” as a place-holder, the way that Anastasia and Magnolia were pseudonyms for Aurora and Mulan, respectively. I’m going to take a wild guess and suggest that Gerhardt might be Robin Hood, who was a veteran crusader/knight who returned from battle to then become an outlaw who fought against tyranny.

That’s why I’m thinking he could be a young Maurice, because they wouldn’t release his actual name if they were casting a young Maurice, because it’d give away instantly what the ep is gonna be about.

No, thank you. I’m glad that you found it. I just thought it was just a throwaway thing that Jane Espenson tweeted to a fan, but it looks like it could have more importance now.

Yes, I think it could go either way in that it could be a total new character they’re trying to hide, or it could be someone that’s already on the show that they’re trying to do a younger version of similar in my belief like how the casting call for Jack was for Neal’s character, who is really an older Baelfire. (Or they could just have Gerhardt just be Gerhardt I suppose like Quinn and Anita were just Quinn and Anita, but I would hope not because I was really disappointed that they just killed them off after we had all these theories about them being Merlin and Morgana.) Right now I think that they’ll go with Gerhardt being a younger Maurice because Maurice would fit the clues given, and it seems about the right time for the Belle-centric episode to happen. Not too early because the other regulars need to get their episodes first and she’s still trying to find a place in Storybrooke, but not too late in the season because I think that will be saved for the other regulars plus Bae.
More importantly, I think because Rumple is going to be featured heavily in it, but it’s not his episode, that Belle or Bae makes the most sense as to who it’s centered around. It’s too early though, imo, for it to be Bae’s episode.It might not be Maurice…he’s a minor character, and this show is crowded enough as it is. Why not use the same (older) actor? Is it really necessary that they take the time and effort to higher a twenty-year old? So far, they have never hired an adult actor when they already had an adult actor. When multiple actors have been cast, it’s because they need a child (i.e. Bailey Medison for Snow White) or possible when they need an adult (maybe Michael Raymond-James for Bae).
Also, we’re assuming a lot about Belle’s backstory. If this is really a Belle-centric episode, maybe Gerhardt’s her brother who died in the ogre wars and taught her to be brave. Who knows?
