Phillip or Aurora?
I liked the twist and the fact that it is making many people question it.
Best episode of the season so far.
[adrotate group="5"]Seemed more like Aurora, because she felt it not necessary to speak to Phillip and her motive was to tell the one she loves how she felt. Screwball Ninja had a great essay detailing the “subterranean text” of why Mulan all along may not have been pining for Phillip. I agree with her take on it now but I was not sure the first time I read it.

Keeper of FelixAlso, when Robin has the line about a loved one, Mulan replies with, “We shall see,” which is a line stolen directly from Aurora. There’s no doubt or debate about it IMO, I think they showed pretty clearly that Mulan was in love with Aurora.
I think it confused a lot of people because it seemed like at least for part of Season 2 she was in love with Phillip and then she got to be close friends with Aurora and we don’t know what all happened while they were off rescuing Phillip but things seem to have changed and her affections switched to Aurora.
I didn’t expect it to end well for her either way (she was either going to tell Aurora and hope they’d run off together, ditching the guy they just rescued who supposedly meant so much to them, or she was going to go tell her new best friend that she’s in love with her husband – neither of which is good), and on top of that Phillip & Aurora have been proven True Love at least once (we don’t yet know what was required to rescue Phillip from the wraith medallion) and it was right in front of Mulan (in fact it’s literally how she met Aurora to begin with).
It still baffles me actually that people forget about that and are now complaining that Aurora ISN’T running off with Mulan, ditching her TL husband whose baby she’s carrying, yet freaking out about the hint of adultery from Tink wanting Regina to run off with Robin Hood years ago. This fandom I swear…
Either way it was heartbreaking for her (unrequited love sucks) and I have high hopes that she’ll find who she’s truly meant to be with, but I think in this particular instance, she was definitely in love with Aurora. Like Phee said, she used a line Aurora said previously.

I think it was pretty clear she was in love with Aurora at this point. She asks if Phillip around then tells Aurora that she’s the one she really wanted to talk to- and this is right after being encouraged not to hold feelings in when it comes to love. She’s brimming with excitement when she approaches Aurora. Why would she be so eager to tell Aurora that she was in love with *Phillip*?

They did sorta set up her potential attraction to Phillip, I guess, but I never really bought it that she was in love with him. If so, why would she spend all that time trying to help him rescue his true love? Unless Mulan is some sorta masochist, it just doesn’t make sense IMO. I guess the same could be said for her having helped Aurora save Phillip, but I think by that point, even if she had feelings for Aurora, she wasn’t entertaining it as an actual, legit, relationship option, so she wasn’t losing out on anything by helping to reunite them.
There was debate about which one of them Phillip was talking to in Broken when he looked over his shoulder and says, “I love you.” Again though, I never really considered the Mulan option seriously, because he’s just been on this big quest to find Aurora, and if he’d fallen in love with Mulan instead, then why not just leave Aurora asleep? And ya know, we’ve just seen him use TLK to wake Aurora, and I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t have worked if he was secretly in love with Mulan.

And then when Aurora was all smiley, Mulan was all, “Why are you smiling at me like that?” Like she had a momentary glimmer of hope that perhaps there was faint chance that Aurora could possibly return her feelings. Then NOPE.

I just ignore the wannabe moralistic crowd. It drives me mad.
I love that Mulan “came out” in a fashion. So heartbreaking when she relinquished her chance to put Neal’s lessons into practice by not wanting to disrupt her love’s happiness. So adorkable!
