I think Rumpel has been the player behind of mostly everything from the point after he lost Baelfire ultimately leading to the curse, and our main storyline.
Agreed. From that moment on, he was plotting, scheming, and manipulating a way to create the curse to get back to Bae. One of the things I love about his character is how he so masterfully manipulates everyone, like a boss.
I do think that BF manipulates situations and people too, but not for selfish reasons. Rumple has no regard for what happens to the people he uses, he just has his eyes on the prize. But BF does what she does for the good of all, which is why she proclaims herself to be on the “right side”, though some of her methods may not be 100% honest.
I don’t think she intentionally dropped hints to guide him in the direction of cursing everyone. The idea that the magic in FTL was dying out, so she wanted to use Rumple to take them to a new world is interesting, and I can certainly see where people get that idea, but I’m not convinced she’s quite that notorious.
I’m not entirely convinced that she gave Bae the bean in the hope that Rumple would go with him. I think she knew Rumple well enough to know that he’d want no part of that vortex, because the magic came from her. I also think that perhaps she actually needed him to stay in FTL, because his dark magic was needed to co-exist with her good magic, in a “bring balance to the force” kind of way. So I think she gave Bae the bean to send him away, because it was the only way to protect him from his father, who was indestructible.
I also think BF has done some manipulating in SB, because I think she retained her memories so she’d be able to oversee what happened to them all in this new world. No way would she let all her people be transported to a new world and just leave it up to chance that everything would work out. I think she kept tabs on Emma, and was the one who orchestrated Henry being brought to SB.
– Mother Superior knows that Emma is about to have a baby.
– Mother Superior goes to Regina to drop hints about how a child would fill the void in her life, (why did Regina wait until then to adopt a kid, why not do it earlier, something had to instigate that decision for her).
– Regina goes to Mr Gold because Rumple gets the babies for people.
– Mr Gold goes to Mother Superior, who would know of any orphans in town in need of adoption.
– Mother Superior arranges for Henry to come to SB.She may even have been the one to suggest to Mary Margaret that Henry would like the book, so he got it at just the right time to put the pieces together and go get Emma.
So I guess I’d classify both BF and Rumple as “puppet masters”, I just think that she does it for the greater good, instead of personal gain.
Where the original Dark One came from, whether that was Zoso or someone before him, may not be all that relevant.
I’m wondering if BF had something to do with the creation of the Dark One, and if that power was also part of her, being that she’s been labelled the “original power”. Shouldn’t that mean that all power was originally contained in her? But by the time of our story, she’s considered the bearer of only good power, and the dark power is contained in a whole separate entity. Maybe she tried to rid herself of her dark power, and in doing so, the Dark One was born, because power can’t be destroyed.
[adrotate group="5"]August 19, 2012 at 6:09 pm #153118AliasscapeParticipantThe Blue Fairy seemed quite settled that the Dark One magic DIDN’T belong in the Enchanted Forest. I’m not sure what realm it came from but if there was any force to be balanced, then it seemed like it was probably specifically upsetting that balance. Who knows, maybe the Dark One’s powers were part of the reason the Enchanted Forest’s magic seemed to be going away.
Blue Fairy: Oh. And you’re not untouched by magic, are you, child? There’s something dark in your life.
Baelfire: My father. He is the Dark One.
Blue Fairy: Oh. I can’t make him the man he was before, but I can send him someplace where he won’t be able to use his powers.
Baelfire: Not a jail. I want to be with him. Like it used to be.
Blue Fairy: Not a jail, young one, just a place without magic.
Baelfire: But magic is everywhere.
Blue Fairy: In this world, yes. You see, what ails your father is specific to our realm. His powers do not belong here. You must go where you can escape this wretched curse.
Baelfire: Go? We have to leave?
Blue Fairy: Yes. It is the only way. Can you do it? Can you leave everything here behind for the unknown?
Baelfire: If it means I get my father back, then yes.
Blue Fairy: You’re a very good son, Baelfire. You are the part of him that keeps him human. That little light inside of him that still glows. It’s his love for you. Hold out your hand.
(The Blue Fairy tosses him a transparent looking bean.)
Baelfire: What is it?
Blue Fairy: A magic bean. The very last one that is known to our kind. The others got away from us. You just use it wisely, and follow wherever it leads you. It will save you both.
It also makes it sound like the Dark One powers perhaps were not even originally evil. Perhaps in the world those powers originated, the power was easily usable for good but it only manifests darkly in the Enchanted Forest. I also wonder if in the world the Dark One powers came from, EVERYONE there had similar powers so it wasn’t able to be wielded so unfairly or dangerously. Perhaps someone stole the Dark One powers from another realm having no idea the transformation they’d undergo. Maybe just as magic will be unpredictable in our world, any magic that originates from outside the Enchanted Forest is also less predictable there.

August 19, 2012 at 9:14 pm #153130PriceofMagicParticipantCould the blue fairy have been watching Rumple and Bae before Bae called for her help? The part where she says “You’re a very good son, Baelfire. You are the part of him that keeps him human. That little light inside of him that still glows. It’s his love for you.” How would she know that? How did she know Bae’s name when he didn’t tell her and she initially called him “child”?
All magic comes with a price!
Keeper of FelixAugust 20, 2012 at 4:17 am #153137lilredParticipantIt is strange that she would know his name and his bond with his father…the Keegan Connor interview said something along the lines that she may have had a past/past interactions with Rumple and have been protective of him/wanted him to be the man she remembered again. Of course, vague enough that it could mean a couple things, but it does seem like she is connected to this family and had been watching them for some time. Which sounds kind of creepy! 😯
Maybe she was Baelfire’s fairy Godmother or behind the mystery of what happened to Bae’s mom?
Most of the first season has Rumpelstiltskin as the puppet master/ trickster. As good as he is in that role, I could see someone else really holding the strings.
Had thought the BF sent Bae away, planted the idea of the curse into Rumples mind, because of the diminishing resources in EF for awhile. Which led to Rumple tricking Regina – and Regina manipulating all she could.
Now, I’m wondering if we haven’t met the true ‘puppet master’ yet! The BF may be the oldest and most powerful being in EF, but when I look at the doors: I wouldn’t be surprised if there was someone else lurking who has even more power. We haven’t yet learned where the Dark One originated from, or how he came to the EF?
Has anyone else thought that Rumple as the ‘Dark One’ is very similar to Loki from Norse mythology. Both are tricksters, can help in a journey or cause untold hardships. Mischievous! I’m not sure the creators would take on Norse Mythology (since it’s currently present in pop culture), but now I need a picture of the portal doors again!

My theory about BF giving Bae the bean to separate him from his father and keep Rumple there for the balance of power, basically assumes that much of what she told him in that scene was merely said to convince him to use the bean. An example of her not being 100% pure in order to do the “right” thing.

That’s a really interesting idea!

I’d be very surprised if there was a Dark One running around FTL and BF wasn’t keeping tabs on who he was and what he was up to.
September 9, 2012 at 12:43 am #153663charmingParticipantI also agree with Oncescape. I also might add concerning the Blue Fairy and lying to Snow and Charming about the tree. Should the Blue Fairy tell the truth and say that tree will take two people but Geppetto won’t build it unless he sends Pinnochio? or just say that the wardrobe will just send one?
