Just a guess, but maybe the medallion is a kind of “portal” to the netherworld and the wraith its keeper.

So maybe the compass can be used to hack the medallion to get back to Storybrooke.

That’s a fun idea about him being the Sandman! He’s a character from folklore, so he’d fit right in.

I wasn’t really sure about Barrett possibly being the Sandman because to me the spoilers could mean he was a true outsider which I took to mean that he wasn’t a fictional character at all like everyone else. However, after reading this spoiler, I do think that he’s going to be the Sandman or a character like that connected to the Netherworld.

Question: Any fresh intel on who Ethan Embry is playing on Once Upon a Time? —Jenny
Ausiello: Jennifer Morrison knows about as much as the rest of us — which isn’t much. “[All we] know is he’s an outsider, he is a stranger and he is not a fairytale character,” she says, before quickly adding, “at least he’s not someone anyone recognizes from fairytale land.”

I wouldn’t think of the Sandman to be a fairytale character; although I do think there are probably fairy tales that contain a character like him, but no one would ever recognize him if he’s the Sandman so that part certainly fits.

Right now I feel like he’ll seem like a good guy, and in a way he will be, I think, but I believe if he’s the Sandman, he’s starting to get annoyed at these outsiders invading his world and manipulating it. First, there was Henry with the vial that Granpa Rumple gave him. Then, it was Charming being purposefully put under, so that he could communicate with Snow. Then, if Cora was telling the truth, and Aurora and Mulan are able to rescue Phillip from that world, I could see Barrett becoming very upset by all these strangers going into his world and using it for their advantage.

Also, this spoiler was with the new Barrett spoiler,

Question: Is the Mulan/Aurora arc over on Once Upon a Time? Are they done for the season/forever? –Mary
Ausiello: Mitovich — who just spent a long weekend in Vancouver, where Once shoots — hears that one of the princesses will be seen soon after the show returns from its holiday break (on Jan. 6).

I wonder if this may be connected to the nightmares Neal has been having? After all, in this show there are no such things as a throw away refreance.
