Maybe there were suspicions about the Kingdom’s moral grounds before. If there are wars that didn’t make sense as to why they were occurring, maybe the men were thinking about leaving the navy anyhow. Killian mentioned becoming free men. So maybe they were forced to be in the Navy, not by choice. Now the choice to take what they please, to go against the Kingdom, is really appealing, like a revolution. That part reminded me of Les Miz. I would love to see what happened next. Did other ships join in Killian’s cause? Did he battle with the Naval ships? What did the King think of this Naval officer turned Pirate. Did the King try to make a deal with Killian to stop attacking his ships? It seems like by the time Killian met Milah, the battles were over and he was just seeking out fun. For me this opens a whole new chapter in FTL’s history.
Maybe but I feel like I need to point out that Hook tells them that if they disagree with what he’s saying they can “walk the bloody plank.” He’s not actually giving them an option.
But I do think it was more “we need to get them to be pirates without an messy moral quandaries”

What if the King needed the dreamshade to wipe out the Ogres? We don’t know what he really wanted it for.
The king lied to them. A lie that turned out to be deadly to the CAPTAIN. I assume he was a really good and beloved guy to his shipmates and crew so for them, I think they felt the same thing ad Hook when they found out he was dead over a lie the king told. Its not a stretch for me to think third turn against him after that so quickly.

Yeah I can buy that they turned on the King because his lie had cost the life of their beloved Captain.
Ever since the promo pics came out, I’ve been wondering if this Navy was serving Eric’s ancestors, because the uniform had an Eric feel about the look of it.
Was hoping there might be some clue as to who they were serving, but didn’t catch anything.

We all figured that, but just confirming.

In most 17-18-19th century pirate tales, or tales based in those times, men in the Navy were often running away from something or someone, or running to a sense of belonging. So in terms of broad stereotypes of pirate/naval lore…..
- Their true loyalty lay with their crew mates, the people who would stand by them and die for/with them
- a Captain was worth serving, kings come and go
- life on the open sea often freed them of rules of society
All things rather conducive to Going Full Pirate!
But yes, it was rather convenient how quickly they went “bring on the skull and crossbones”
October 28, 2013 at 6:43 am #219438PriceofMagicParticipantI don’t think it was the ogres that the king was hoping to wipe out. That would’ve been a good thing and I wouldn’t see Killian objecting to that on the grounds of It’s not fair to the ogres. Countless lives would be saved if the ogres were gone. The entire plot of Once wouldn’t have happened if the ogres were gone. RumBelle would never have happened if the ogres were gone (Yay to the ogres on this one).
For some reason, I don’t think this was too long before Hook met Milah. Perhaps 1 or 2 maybe 3 years beforehand? If Hook could just drop by into a tavern in Rumple’s village, it would suggest that Hook wasn’t being actively hunted by the FTL navy which would suggest he didn’t have a big reputation for being a pirate.

I agree. I think Hook needed a few years to really establish himself as pirate but yes, I agree maybe 2 or 3 years before he met Milah.

I have a feeling it was a “need to know” basis sort of thing, so yes, the king did lie but it wasn’t necessarily because the King was out to do evil in the sake of power.
We’ll have to get more story, but I do think the King is somehow related to Eric and his story. Otherwise next week’s episode takes a very random leap and they said they were trying to make this more like a movie.
