We were all talking in the chat box about why we started to watch Once and thought it would be a good idea for a thread.
I started from the pilot. I was reading through the summer leading up about it on TVLine and thought it looked interesting. I love fairytales and always have and thought it was an interesting thing to do. I actually didn’t think it would make it past the first season the summer before it aired, but I was going to watch it.
So in late October 2011 it premiered and was nothing like I thought it was going to be. I was addicted from the beginning. I had thought it was going to be a “fairytale of the week” type of show, but it turned out to be so much more. By the time 1×04 The Price of Magic came around I was starting to fall in love with Rumple and shocked to discover I already had a crush on him from the 90s.
Now I’m just as addicted, if not more, from that first day it aired.

October 13, 2013 at 10:36 pm #215634Knave Of HeartsParticipantWell, one name drew me in.
Robert Carlyle.
I was a big fan of his from Stargate Universe and thought about checking his new show out because of that. At first, when I saw the promos I was not really hooked, and to be perfectly honest. I was under the impression that the town transformed into the fairy tail world at night with the citizens becoming FT characters as well. Boy was I wrong
Even after the pilot I wasn’t completely hooked, but loved Carlyle as Rumple and decided to stay with it.
The rest as they say dearies, is history.
October 13, 2013 at 10:37 pm #215635RumplesGirlKeymasterFor me it was the combo of LOST writers (HUGE fan of LOST) and my undying love all things Disney. I started a few episodes in. I think the first live one I caught was The Price of Gold (go figure). I had marathon-ed all the previous episodes right before was enthralled. After Skin Deep I knew I wanted to be fully immersed into this fandom (and that I would live and breathe Rumple forever) and thus started searching out forums and theories. Found this place. Used a Regina line from Skin Deep as my name (You should get a new girl Rumple.). And…here I am!

But yeah, I’m a Disney Fan, and to learn that she cast a curse to bring fairytale characters to our world…I was amazed. So that’s what got me hooked on Once Upon A Time! I fell in love with Regina after the ten seconds when she burst through the Charming Wedding, and have been an Evil Regal since October 2011! So yeah…that’s why I love Once Upon A Time & the Queen!

I listened to it while I was at work and then later, watched the pilot with my boyfriend. We were both hooked after that and then of course, there was the fascination with Rumpelstiltskin and trying to figure out his character.
October 14, 2013 at 9:45 am #215749kfchimeraParticipantI have always loved fairytales, Disney versions or not, and I’ve read a lot of the original tales and obscure ones too. Plus I’ve seen fairytale mix-up type things before (10th kingdom, but even as a child Sesame Street does some, but more recently a Disney mix-up that I experienced was a video-game with a story, Kingdom Hearts). I knew I would love this show, when I saw RC had been cast, because I also saw him in Stargate Universe. Then they cast J.Mo who I’d seen in How I Met Your Mother, and while I hadn’t seen GG in anything I had heard a lot about her acting being very good. That was all I needed to go all in on the show, though Snow White is probably my least favorite fairy tale princess (But in this show I do like her much better!).

November 23, 2013 at 12:41 am #225970once_dudeParticipantwell I first heard it form a friend, before season 1 aired, and he was excited because it was the Lost writers. I had seen a bit of Lost (season 1) but not much mroe than that. Before long there was commercials for it on youtube before every video I would watch. The ads drew me in. Then my mom and I and brother watched the first episode and I had been addicted ever since. I am probably the most addicted fan I know personally though I am sure many on this site ahve me beat. I love all the Disney reference and in reference to Peter Pan and Alice from the books. I have not read many of the original tales but a big Disney movie fan. I read somewhere as a joke: You know you’re addicted to Once Upon A Time when you consider telling the Once fairytales as bedtime stories and I think I would be fool enough to do that.
Magic always comes with a price, so I pay with visa.
November 23, 2013 at 6:27 am #226008RedParticipantI live in Northern Ireland so I discovered it in April 2012, as it had just started to be aired in the UK. My friend suggested I watch it. I love disney and fairytales, and the concept sounded really interesting. It was during my exams so I thought I would procrastinate a bit and watch a few. After the first episode I was hooked and watched the first season in 2 days woops… I wish I had of discovered it earlier but then there was so much mystery with guessing the identity of characters it probably would have killed me haha.
November 23, 2013 at 7:49 am #226010KebParticipantI’m a total Disney fan (and now employee, *cough*) and so I ran into ads for Once before the pilot and was like, yeah, I have to see what they do with it.
And I was pretty hooked from the start; it became my normal thing to watch it or catch up on Monday if I had to miss an episode. And then there was Skin Deep…and there was no going back, because my favorite character was on, she was awesome, and…hardly ever on 🙁 But I still had to watch!
And then came 211…and I couldn’t stop running it through my head, and trying to work out timelines, and so forth. And thus I came here because I NEEDED to talk about it because it was invading all my dreams, it was the first thought I had when I woke up and the last when I fell asleep. That two week hiatus was the longest hiatus of the show for me…
And so here I am, a bit behind on the timeline but 100% certified Oncer, Rumbeller, Belle, Dearie, and SF. I love this crazy dysfunctional family, and I want happy endings for everyone…even Regina (whom I adore as a character, and I love the actress, but who doesn’t fascinate me the same way that Rumple does).
