I can’t help but continue to think that Regina and Rumples are related. This teeter totter power game that they play reminds me of a sibling rivalry. I know I know , the theory is that Rumples is centuries old and Regina is not. But in the Disney Snow White movie the EQ had a spell that made her look old and ugly, so why couldn’t she also have a spell that make her look young and beautiful or even give her eternal life for that matter? She did after all have a spell powerful enough to erase EVERYONE’s memory.
Now what doesn’t fit so nicely into my theory is her father. Since we did see him and he looked “age appropriate”.

Hopefully we will get that filled out in future episodes. In “Skin Deep,” Rumpel says, “You’ll never be more powerful than me,” which indicates to me that she has been working on deposing him for a long time. Does she know where his power comes from? Does she know how he got it? Would she consider taking it the same way, and getting herself cursed and ugly? (I highly doubt that one!) It seems clear that Rumpel is the one who has the power, and EQ tries to make him wield it to serve her purposes. So far Rumpel/Gold has done that, but I think there is a limit. I expect we’ll see more of them pushing each other in upcoming episodes, now that they are out in the open that they both know their true identities.

Can you direct me to that discussion? Or give me an idea why you think this. I hadn’t give much thought to that possibility so I am curious.

The EQ is our woman in black and seems very bent in a certain dark direction, and in many ways we are at the moment more certain of her direction. Rumpel on the other hand is a more Jacob-like character, more mysterious with a streak of humanity that seems to endear him to viewers, although I would not say people are dedicated to his “side” as they were to Jacob in LOST, but still there is some similarity in the rivalry.

While I love both actors dearly and think both are the best on the show, Regina/EQ is the character I love to hate and Rumple/Gold is the character I, in a word, obsess over (in a healthy middle aged way). So the thought of the two of them together would make me want to barf. Although I will concede that they do seem to have an impeccable sense of fashion in common in both FTL and in Storybrooke. Of course Robert Carlyle looks good in a plastic apron holding a shovel in the middle of the forest . . .
March 2, 2012 at 5:30 pm #138045weedithParticipantI don’t get any sort of romantic-entanglement vibe from them. And rumplegoldfankristi summed up my sentiments on that to a tee.
I see them as no more or less than the perfect foils for each other. They both recognize and grudgingly respect the other’s power. EQ sought out Rumple, as did pretty much everybody else in the kingdom, because he was well known to be the most powerful person in the land. I would be very interested to know what EQ paid for the curse in the first place. Did she place a custom order or was this just something Rumple had dreamed up and had on the shelf in his curse shop? And what did Rumple require as payment? We know what the payment was for telling her what she did wrong (apparently tech support doesn’t come with the purchase of the curse), but what did she have to give up to get it way back when, before she traded it to Malificent?
I know I have gone way off-topic, but I have a mind that wanders. Sue me!
March 2, 2012 at 7:12 pm #138050rumplegoldfankristiParticipantweedith I’m right there with you on trying to figure out the whole origin of the curse, especially now after knowing everything that happened in Skin Deep AFTER we saw Rumple and EQ having their little heart to heart about the curse from his jail cell in FTL. I’m confused about why he wouldn’t have have told her suck lemons and be on her way after how she screwed things up with Belle – so there is something seriously going on with the origins of that that curse.
And on a side note – so nice to know I’m not alone in my “admiration” for Mr. Carlyle. I was logged on to Twitter during his Q/A session on Wednesday while my son was at practice and everyone was wondering why I was so intense. No luck this time in getting a response but I was able to assure everyone that there is no “cougaring” going on like with some of the Twilight moms. I’m almost 40 and he’s 50, so I believe that makes it a respectable celebrity crush (although I’m sure he’s much more impressed by the 16 year olds who are drooling all over him!!).
March 2, 2012 at 7:37 pm #138058weedithParticipantOne thing I really need to do is get my head wrapped around the timeline. I am totally fine with their non-chronological mode of story-telling, but it does make it a little more complicated to figure out which conversations happened after which events and what characters knew or didn’t know at which times. That said, I implicitly trust these writers to have thought all of that through and not make huge continuity errors. Once the DVDs are available I fullly intend to go back and rewatch, probably with a written timeline in hand. Or better yet, watch the episodes in chronological order of events (not order of airing). I may actually be able to do that before the DVDs, as my sister has all but the first 3 episodes DVR’ed and I have made her swear on her life that she will not erase them before I have had a chance to watch them!
March 2, 2012 at 9:34 pm #138073rumplegoldfankristiParticipantI think the green scaly skin and rotting teeth helps my husband to be understanding about my obsession – I don’t think he feels threatened by a character that he considers to be “creepy” and sub-human. He actually worked for an hour to find a way to get a very specific Rumple giggle as the text message tone on my phone.
