Why does Arthur want to kill Merlin?
And more specifically, why did Merlin give him empowering visions if this was going to be the result?
Unless, Arthur’s visions really came from someone else, like whoever put Merlin IN the tree?

I think it has to do with “broken” promises. Arthur was told that he’d be king of a new, great kingdom. But it hasn’t happened, largely through Arthur’s own obsession with wanting to fix Excalibur, which in his mind must be mended before he can be king. In reality, Arthur should have been putting in the work of fixing the Kingdom, whole Excalibur or no. Humans, by nature, like to blame other people for their problems. Arthur blames Merlin for having lied to him, when really Arthur is to blame for becoming to myopically focused. It’s nothing to do with magic; it’s simple human nature.

And I agree about Arthur’s obsession. He seems to think the sword will automatically fix the kingdom for him, where all it really does is say that he is the one worthy to do so. Which means he is actually supposed to DO it. 🙄

Thanks, @RG — I was also thinking that the whole Arthur wanting to kill Merlin thing seemed a bit unfounded. But your explanation makes sense.
By the way, do we know for a fact that Merlin is, in fact, in/the tree? Arthur clearly believes so, but Merlin has allegedly been photosynthesising before Arthur was born. Could the tree be a red herring?

Also, part of my original question is still bugging me, and it’s this: If Merlin can see the future, then why did he choose Arthur? Isn’t there someone else more worthy? Or are Merlin’s future seeing abilities as sketchy as Rumples seer?
Is Merlin playing some kind of a long game, where he just needs Arthur to use the sword to get him out of the tree, regardless of his motives, and then Merlin can take care of the rest? But what is the rest? Just what are Merlin’s ultimate goals???

Could? Yes. In this show, absolutely. Daniel brought it up in the podcast last night–this very ideas–and my response was that I hoped not only because it’s so in line with Arthurian mythology and given that they’ve dismantled a lot of the mythos already, I’d like there to be something that feels…original and not just in name only (ie: having Arthur, Merlin, Guinevere and Lance)

I think Arthur is worthy, he just became obsessed about the wrong thing. All that dedication and hard work and myopic effort to finding the missing piece of Excalibur could have gone toward healing the kingdom. It would have been a success. He truly could have been a very good king. But, like so many other villains, he got distracted by shiny shiny things and focused on the wrong endeavor. So, it’s not that Merlin was lying or wrong or that his powers aren’t up to snuff, it’s that Arthur made a choice, largely based on Arthur’s own understanding of the prophecy and what it entailed (he must have the sword and he must have Guinevere). If he does not have those, then he can’t be the King.

That is so equally possible, though Baby! Arthur seemed pretty pleased with what he had been told overall.

I think it’s like the Hercules episode “Once Upon a Future King”, where the experiences are part of Merlin’s plan to turn Arthur into a good king.
This would parallel Emma’s plan for Rumpel.
