It is because he is related to Edward Cullen! ….just kidding 😉
In the episode Dreamy, the fairies state as a fact that fairy dust is the most powerful and precious substance in all the land. My theory is that Rumpel’s skin is rather shiny due to the dark ones curse containing fairy dust. This enables him to perform magic and “grant wishes” like a fairy. This may tie in with why Rumpel hates fairies (nuns). They could be angry at Rumpel for abusing the it.

They were clearly going for a sexy-bad-boy type of Rumple so it would make sense for them to find similarities between the Edward character. Only since Rumple has so many other obvious features – green skin, rotting teeth, skin tight leather pants, the hair, etc. it seemed kind of like they said “Oh let’s throw some glitter on to make him our show’s version of Edward Cullen sparkling in a more subtle way.”
But I also wonder if maybe the glitter just makes his features stand out a bit more. Since his make-up is darker and he is usually filmed in darker light it might just be practical in that the glitter helps to brighten his face.
I hadn’t thought about the fairy dust before.

March 23, 2012 at 1:20 am #139495killianhookfanParticipantNo, really. In TV Guide they talked about how they came up with Rumple’s wardrobe. At first they just had him in some kind of hoodie but they didn’t like that because he looked too simple and non-threatening so they said “Let’s make him a rock star.” And they had in mind Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. So they re-made him from head to toe with those two in mind and ended up with Rumple’s current look which they said they liked because he ended up looking sexier and more dangerous. There’s no way you put Robert Carlyle in skin tight leather pants without getting that desired outcome!

Couldn’t agree more rumplegoldfan! He’s proof it’s possible to be creeped out and attracted at the same time. Very interesting where they got the image for him from.

I have to agree that they were going for creepy, eccentric, intriguing, scary, mesmerizing, etc. I really don’t think the makeup people did the gray, scaly skin, the black pointy nails and the rotting teeth thinking, “fangirls will go wild for this!!” I do think that the wardrobe was done intentionally to give him some panache and to reflect his Storybrooke sartorial style, but even there, leather pants aside, I don’t think sexy was on their list.
Now here’s a question for the Rumple-is-hot set out there (and, mind you, I am not excluding myself from that group 😳 )
Did you find the Rumplestiltskin character sexy, as in romantically appealing, before “Skin Deep”? Because for myself, I never would have put him in that role until the canon storyline gave him a tragic love interest. Mr. Gold always had that slightly off, sexy-dangerous appeal, and I am a sucker for a Scottish accent. But giggling gray-boy? No. Not until he caught Belle falling off the ladder.I personally think they have toned back the creepy and humanized Rumplestiltskin’s make-up to some degree. Even his clothing has softened up a bit since Skin Deep. I don’t know if they are responding to Rumple’s status, on the forums at least, as an are-you-kidding-me?-sex-object, or if that was the direction they were going with him anyway. I always hate to overestimate the influence of fan opinion on the producers. I would like to think they have a creative vision and are not going to be put off course by fans, especially considering you can’t please everybody. They surely learned that on Lost!
I’m curious about other people’s opinions on this. ❓ ❓ ❓ ❓
March 23, 2012 at 4:23 am #139508weedithParticipantOh, and as for your subject-line question, I always assumed the gold tint was related to Rumplestiltskin’s gift of spinning straw into gold. Fairy dust is made from diamonds so it should be clear and sparkly. Maybe Rumple kicks up gold dust with the spinning wheel. Was the previous Dark One gold? I can’t remember.
March 23, 2012 at 12:38 pm #139523killianhookfanParticipantPersonally, yes I did find Rumple sexy in an oddly sinister bad-boy kind of way. But if anyone had asked me at the time, before Skin Deep, I doubt that I would have admitted it because I honestly thought there was something slightly wrong with me to find that character sexy. I was greatly relieved to find that I was not the only person out there mesmerized by more than his magic. However I will say, that they did change something about his make-up from the pilot because I can hardly recognize his face in the pilot – it doesn’t even look like Robert Carlyle at all to me. And in the pilot you don’t see his “Rock Star” outfit and he doesn’t walk around with his
characteristic “strut.” For me it’s the combination of the toned down make-up, the Rock Star outfit and the way Rumple carries himself that I find sexy – I think it’s the “bad-boy” thing he’s got going on (I’m willing to overlook the rotting teeth, it’s all about the complete package ya know). In the pilot, I think he’s just plain creepy – but his character still drew me in at that point and I was immediately in love with his character because I think Robert Carlyle is just an awesome actor. But Skin Deep, for sure did me in. Like I went from, “interesting that I would find that green creepy guy even remotely attractive, something must be seriously wrong with me” to “excuse me while I wipe the drool off my chin but that man is HOT!!!!”
March 23, 2012 at 1:20 pm #139531obisgirlParticipantI don’t know if you all noticed but during Skin Deep, his skin changes throughout the episode. Like the happier he gets, the shinier his skin becomes. When we see Rumple now, it’s mostly dark — so the color of skin is definitely tied to his mood. Like a ‘mood ring’ except it’s not a ring, it’s his whole body.
