Zelena gave the night root to David so that he’d hallucinate and have to confront his deepest fears. He defeated his fear using the heel of his sword. Regina said that the sword became a totem when David used it to defeat his deepest fear. So the question is why did Zelena want it and what does she intend to use it for?

March 23, 2014 at 9:09 pm #254974RumplesGirlKeymasterI think Zelena is literally creating the Classic Oz compaions (Lion, Tin Man, and Scarecrow) by taking those qualities from the people who have them in abundance.
Charming = has the most courage = now gone= Cowardly Lion.
Someone else is going to become the Tin Man and the Scarcrow.
Scarecrow = most brains = Belle!
Tin Man…I’m going with Neal or Henry

So, if we’re going with the Oz theme, I guess that makes Emma the metaphoric Dorothy-figure, since she’s always been looking for home. Yet, I don’t think Zelena is actually recreating the classic characters. I think she is using their totems for some bigger purpose like a spell which needs to draw power from other sources like David’s sword. The question then in my mind is what exactly she’s going to use those totems for and how?

So if we lay this out:
Cowardly Lion = Charming (has a lot of courage)
Tin Man = pretty sure the 315 promo just showed it’s Neal
Scarecrow = Belle (a lot of brains)
Toto = Henry (the loyal companion)
Dorothy = Emma (duh)
Wicked Witch of the East = Regina
Glinda = Snow (maybe…there is a good theory that they are related)
Wizard = Rumple?
Hook = ????
So totems for each:
Charming = sword
Neal = heart
Belle = her cup?
Henry = his book?
not sure about the rest

No he’s not. She isn’t turning them into those characters.
They are the *REVERSE* characters. And Zelena is taking those traits that make up those classic characters. He isn’t the Cowardly Lion. He’s the brave lion, and now Zelena has a token of his heroism. Still don’t know why she wants it, but that’s the goal—take the traits from those who have it most.

David is the cowardly lion
Belle is the scarecrow
they are building up outlaw queen so what if if Regina was tinman

March 23, 2014 at 10:38 pm #255038RumplesGirlKeymasterHeck it even worse than Snow pulling out “Fake” Excalibur, because the point of the story of oz that you don’t need any kind of symbol to brain, courage or heart that the individual always had it within them the entire time. If anything I can see some sort of psychological damage being done, but having magic be the cause feels like a cheat.
But they still *have* those things. Zelena took a token that represents those traits, not the actual trait.
Beside I had to put my money on anyone being these character it would be Rumple, because he actually believes himself believe he a coward, he deserve not to be loved, and now we are seeing him loose his mind. If it isn’t Rumple then they should be their own character they are popular enough for it.
I don’t disagree and for a long time I thought Rumple would be the Cowardly Lion, but out characters aren’t actually the Oz characters. She’s just taking the reverse traits we associate with them. And no one is braver than Charming, the consummate white knight.
Rumple inhabits all those traits from Oz and really so does everyone. But I think she needs Rumple for something else.

Honestly, I think that’s the whole point! She’s going to take these symbols from our characters that we will see through flashbacks, as we have with Charming, and most of our heroes will have self-doubt and go on personal journeys. We already see Charming struggling with his fear of being a father, so perhaps Belle will think she’s not smart enough to figure out how to save Rumple, and Neal will doubt that he was ever meant to be with his family. Then at the end of the season they will all realize what they needed (brains, courage, and heart), they already had in the first place.
