Why is Gothel Looking for the Guardian?

In this episode, we saw that Mother Gothel is ferverently looking for The Guardian, someone who is pure of heart.

Her intentions for doing so were not made clear during this episode.

Her intentions for helping Drizella make her mother miserable are also not clear.

My guess is that she wants to find the guardian to destroy them by making them less pure of heart. If Drizella was destined to be the guardian, then Gothel would need to keep her angry and dark, which could be why she helping her.

This would also mean that Gothel is this season’s main villain rather than Drizilla.

(Now that Drizella is dark, the guardian at this point could be someone different, which is perhaps something Gothel was not banking on).

What are your theories?

I do wonder what Gothel’s purpose will be. She thought Rapunzel could be the guardian, but all she did with her was hide her in the tower for six years. Does the guardian serve another purpose except to stop the dark one? We don’t know anything about that. The obvious choice is still Henry, but Ella is probably on the list. I don’t think it is Lucy because she is a child and having her hold the dark one dagger or somehow cause Rumpel’s life to end, sounds terrible.

I’m guessing the Guardian actually has something to do with the big bag monster we saw at the end of S6 in the flashforward (I maintain it’s a flashforward to life POST HH and not a flashback). Which still makes it seem like it’s either Henry or Lucy which would make sense given that Henry and Lucy are a Emma/Henry stand in from the first six seasons. One was the Savior and one was the Heart of the Truest Believer.

Gothel wants to be the next Dark One.

She can’t have the Guardian help Rumple destroy the Dark One curse, so she’s locking up potential Guardians. And who is to say Rapunzel wasn’t the Guardian. Gothel blackened Rapunzel’s heart, which took away her potential to be the Guardian.

This season could be leading up to Gothel becoming the next Dark One.

So the guardian just switches from one person to the next? I hope not.
