Okay, I’ve said this millions of times – they can’t make the Wizard her father. It’s direct copying of “Wicked,” so I don’t seem them doing that. However, if they do it this way (and I don’t think they will because, let’s be honest, how clever can A&E be? *looks at family tree*), they can do it without copying from the book/musical.
We saw Zelena go into Oz’s throne room to talk to the Wizard. When she started questioning her life, he told her who her mother is and how she was abandoned. He even showed her an image of Cora leaving Zelena in the woods. But how did he know this? How did he get this image? Because he was there, and it was a memory.
My theory is that Cora saw Walsh coming through the EF as a magician (being transported there through some magical means). They began a love affair and had Zelena, but right after that, he found out he could get better wages in Oz. He told Cora he would come back for her and took Zelena with him as he couldn’t give them royalty now, but if he had better standings throughout the realms, he could. However, when the cyclone came, Walsh and Zelena were separated in different parts of Oz. While Zelena’s adoptive parents found her, Walsh couldn’t go back for her because he found a greater opportunity – becoming the Wizard of Oz.
When Zelena came to Walsh, he knew instantly who she was. That filled him with regret for never going back, but he could sense the magic flowing through her and didn’t want to cross her. This made him want to protect her, so he showed Zelena the memory of Cora placing her down in hopes of having Zelena reconnect with Cora. That’s why he gave her the slippers, because he last saw Cora in the EF.
Now, how did he know about Regina? Because he kept tabs on Cora, as he still loved her. When he saw that she was royalty, he knew he didn’t have to go back. She got what she wanted.
Now, to pick out some breadcrumbs:
- Walsh said he collected many magical items. Maybe one of them was one that could project your memories (that Zelena manipulated with magic to project a live feed on Regina).
- Reason why Cora never mentioned Walsh – he never came back. She succumbed to love, which lead to her being brokenhearted. This, along with the events of “The Miller’s Daughter,” could have confirmed her belief that, and here it comes, “Love is weakness.”
Well, comment below! Comment on any flaws! 🙂

Very nice.
Ok, I hope you’re right. And I still think that they could do it without infringing on Wicked copyright because Zelena isn’t Elphaba and the events you’re describing are different than what happens in Wicked. I know copyright can extend across themes, but none of those characters belong to Maguire. And since they are different from both Baum and Maguire, I still think lawyers can be tricky and get around it.
So…I’m still hoping this theory pans out.

Cora had some spark of magic in her, and obviously Zelena is quite powerful herself. I think this means that her father MUST have some sort of magic–even if it’s limited.
Walsh has tricks, but I think he must have a little bit of magic. He was able to do things that aren’t “parlor tricks”–like putting the shoes on Zelena’s feet. That wasn’t slight of hand, that was actual magic.

Yes but she was Rose when she had Zelena. And they’ve done magical handwaving to explain aging before. If somehow Walsh didn’t age from the time he landed in the EF until we saw him in Oz and onward, I could buy it. Maybe one of the things he found was a way to stay young.

Hard to say. We wouldn’t have known he was in 316 if not for a random pic, tweet, and then the press release.
