Wicked might finally be on its way to defying gravity on the big screen. Stephen Daldry, the director of Billy Elliot on film and stage, is attached to the project, producer Marc Platt recently revealed in an interview with Film Divider. Platt, who produced the show on Broadway, said the team is aiming for a 2016 release date.

“He’s been on for a year or two,” Platt said of Daldry. “But it’s in process. 2016 is the goal, but I don’t know whether we’ll make that goal or not. We will make the movie, but like I said, the bar is really high.” Platt added: “It’s in the works, it’s not in a rush.”

Platt also told Film Divider that Winnie Holzman, who wrote the book for the Broadway show, is working on the screenplay. Holzman is probably best known as the creator of My So-Called Life. Platt, meanwhile, is also a producer on Disney’s Into the Woods film.

So, Wicked fans, it’s on the way, and you probably couldn’t be happier.

What’s odd about this, Oz, the Great and the Powerful was not that long ago. I googled it and it premiered in 2013. But the EW article says there’s no rush, so while 2016 is the goal, it may or may not happen.

I have my doubts it’ll get made in time for 2016. There’s been talk of a Wicked movie since back around when it premiered on Broadway over 10 years ago, and here we are still waiting. Look how long it took for Les Miserables and Into the Woods to get their film adaptations, and those were in the works for a long time too. Besides, for it to release in 2016, they would likely have to film sometime this year, and when they say they aren’t in a rush, that gives me doubt that they’ll manage to do so. One reason it’s been taking so long is because ticket sales are still very strong, so there’s that fear of cannibalizing those sales if a movie were to be made.

It sounded like they were still working on the script adaptation. That can take a lot of time, to make sure it’s just right. I imagine there’s a lot more pressure to adapt from a musical to a movie, that everyone involved everyone wants to do it justice.

Wicked is one of my ultimate favorite books and while I would always prefer a book adaption rather than the stage adaption, I hope they do this!!! For 2016 though? That seems kind of soon, unless they already have the script written (I mean, which they should since its ya know, a musical that’s been on stage since like 2004?) they would have to start now-ish in order to make a 2016 release. Idk. I am excited for it all still. They need to hurry and get that mini-series adaption of the book on the road!
