This question is turning out to be a huge deciding factor in how I think about the WW’s connection to other characters. Here are some of my thoughts. I’d love to hear more ideas.
BORN GREEN:
-possibly the daughter of Rumple after he became the dark one, thus green skin (Cora could also be in the mix for WW’s parentage)
-being born green got her sent to a land without color.
-Maybe green skin is what happens when fairies fall in love and have children. Blue learned the hard way, and sent her daughter away, knowing she was wicked. This could explain why BF is so adamant about following her rules.
-Pixie dust affected her in the womb, like fairy dust did to Grumpy’s egg, which made the WW come out green.
-What if they pull another Sleeping Beauty on us, and make this WW the daughter of the original WW, who would have been the one after Dorothy. This would explain the unusual choice of red hair and perhaps allow the writers to be loyal to the original oz stuff while making the character their own.
TURNED GREEN:
-Say WW is the thing she loves most, as in she loves herself. What if she used her own heart to enact the dark curse, which takes everyone back to storybrooke. Since the curse is hers, she can’t die, but living without a heart is what makes her wicked and green. This would put a whole new twist on the new curse.
-slowly became evil, and then wicked, which resulted in green skin. This could possibly be a correlation as to why Rumple has green skin.
-poisoned by Regina with Green apple (like in Oz the Great and Powerful – not my theory, but I like it.)
-WW is possibly the Black Fairy, and Blue cursed her with green skin when she banished her and took her wand.
-Maybe when Rumple died (or “died”), she somehow became the new Dark One. If she’s the black fairy, maybe she got banished for creating the first Dark One. She put a great portion of her magic into the dagger (like Sauron did with the One Ring in LOTR). When Rumple died, all that magic and power went back to the WW, making her skin green again or maybe she was just green all along.
-Maybe pixie dust had a “nuclear” affect on WW, turning her skin green at some point in her life.
What are some other theories?

But I would also think it’d be a nice twist if we find out maybe she was the original dark one and creator of the dagger. The witch does have quite a few magical objects afterall

1. Cora had an affair with a dashing Wizard, who gave her green elixir. Cora got pregnant, and gave birth to a green baby, who she kept isolated away from public eyes. (All power comes with a price)
2. Cora still had an affair with Wizard, however she gets pregnant. Rumpelstilskin curses the second born baby to be green, because of how Cora not only cheated him out of Regina, but broke his heart. (No one breaks deals with the dark one)
3. Regina and WWW are playing together when they were younger, and Regina accidently turns the WWW green. (Kinda like how child Elsa accidently struck toddler Anna with her powers)

I think it could go either way. Both present interesting story options. If she’s born green, it’s something she has to live with. It’s who she is and no magic or whatever can change that. Might even make her an outcast and make her really resent everyone else.
If she’s turned green, either by an apple (it better be green), that would be interesting too but kind of cliched because it’s already been done (Oz: The Great and the Powerful). But I hope whatever Adam and Eddie come up with, it’s good. And tragic. Somehow, I feel the reason she’s green, it has to do with some great tragedy.

With the title for 316 (the WWW’s first centric) and the song it refers to, which is really sad, I agree that her turning green/being born green is probably not a choice but something that happened to her.
In the pics we’ve seen of Mader in SB, she’s not green though. She is wearing a GIANT green pendant (looks like the one from OZ the G and P) that might be masking her green skin, which means she can turn it on and off, so to speak.

Interesting theory. Sort of like a magic cloaking device. Or if you’ve watched Angel, Jasmine was like that. She was beautiful on the outside but in reality, a giant, ugly thing with bugs.

Ugly, creepy thing with bugs that like ate people….(Jasmine was weird…)
But if she can turn it on and off, why be green in the EF? Why not be “normal” all the time? Unless it’s not tragic. Unless she chose to be green?
