It’s a whole new old world on “Once Upon a Time”!

When the ABC fantasy series returns this week from its winter hiatus, Storybrooke as we knew it is gone. All the characters are back in Fairy Tale Land, except for Emma (Jennifer Morrison) and Henry (Jared S. Gilmore). They’re living in New York — with no memories of Snow White, Prince Charming, or Henry’s adopted mom, the Evil Queen.

“We go back to a very different Fairy Tale Land,” Lana Parrilla told Yahoo TV in a phone interview.

We chatted with the “Once Upon a Time” star about the big change, the arrival of the Wicked Witch, and whether Regina will experience true love’s kiss this season.

“The show left off on a huge cliffhanger last winter. Where do we pick up this week?
it’s overgrown, it doesn’t look the same, it’s not as bright and vibrant as it once was. I can tell you Regina isn’t. She is not happy to be back. But she made the heroic choice by letting go of her son and Emma and sending them off to remain in our world with lost memories.
That choice cemented Regina’s redemption. How does she fit into Fairy Tale Land now?
She is having a very difficult time. Before, part of what we loved about her was her destruction. That was her role in that world. She loved to create havoc, to destroy people, to take away their happiness, to turn them into whatever — snails or monsters or flowers. Rumple and the Queen were both notorious for doing stuff like that.

But she has come so far … I just don’t think Regina can go back to being the Evil Queen, and that’s quite refreshing. From a soulful, character standpoint, for her to go back to who she once was would just be a disservice to the character.

What’s her interaction like with Rebecca Mader’s Wicked Witch?
Regina doesn’t really understand why this witch has come to town. She doesn’t feel threatened by her; she just doesn’t know what she wants or why she’s there. I know why, but you’ll have to tune in and watch. Initially what we see in this first episode, in “New York Serenade” is that Regina doesn’t know why she’s there.
“In one of the flashbacks earlier in the season, we found out that Robin Hood is Regina’s true love. Do we see them cross paths?
You do see them cross paths, but it’s not love at first sight. That’s partially because Regina just isn’t open to that. She doesn’t see what’s standing right in front of her. But then again, she’s consumed with the loss of her son and her heart is broken. It’s the last thing she needs right now — a relationship. She doesn’t even see it. Robin Hood fancies her — even though she’s this Evil Queen. I think he sees the goodness in her heart, but Regina’s just not ready for that next step.
“She hasn’t really been involved in romantic relationships, aside from the dalliance with the Sheriff.
He was a boy toy. That’s kind of how we described him. “Take him to my bed chamber!” For me, it was that line that said it all.
“Are you excited to explore this new side to Regina?
Oh, yes! I think it’s a very beautiful, soft human side that we’ll see in her. I’m excited to explore. I want to. Change is nice, and exploring the different sides to the character is fun for me. And she’s growing, and I think that’s really fun to play. This woman is evolving right before our eyes.

I’m excited to see how Regina develops in S3B. She’s never been my fave character, but I think I’m gonna find her more captivating from here on in.

So excited for this storyline!  Regina will always have that fierceness about her I think, but I can see her turning that into a good thing, and using to protect the people she loves.  Lana’s done a great job with Regina and showing her weaknesses and why she is who she is.  And the more I hear about Outlaw Queen, the better it sounds!
