Does anyone have any theories of what Will is up to?
I have a theory of what Will is doing in town, but it depends highly on who is the author of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. In real life, I know it was Lewis Carroll, but I’m wondering who wrote it in show. Was it Alice herself? It would seem so. At the end of Once Upon at Time in Wonderland, the final scene showed Alice reading what looked to be her own memoirs of her own adventures to her daughter. She had a handwritten manuscript and a hand-sketched drawing of Will and Anastasia (aka the White King and Queen). So maybe Alice is simply the author of her own tale.
Yet, there is also the possibility that someone else published the story. Could the publisher of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland also the be the author of Henry’s storybook entitled Once Upon a Time? If so, then that leads me to wonder if the Knave of Hearts is showing up in SB at this precise time to track him or her down. Will Scarlet (aka the knave) has broken into the library, and was found cuddling a copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, which would indicate all is not well in WL.
Maybe Will is searching for this publisher because he is also a sorcerer. Will had a picture of the (former) Red Queen (aka Anastasia), which could have just been for sentimental value because she is his true love. Or maybe Will wants the author of the book to tweak the story of Anastasia, too, in case something bad has befallen her. Also, I think the sorcerer whose hat Rumple found is the author of Henry’s book, and therefore, also possibly the one who has something to do with the Wonderland story.

While part of the theory about the author being the sorcerer has now debunked by the Blue Fairy, part of me still wonders if Will is back in SB because of the Author.
What are some of the things we know about Will, books, and the Author in S4?
1. Will was missing something that he was desperate to find again. His travel bag.
2. As we’ve seen, Will broke into the library, and was seen by Belle cuddling a copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
3. Emma found in Will’s pocket a torn page of that book with a picture of the Red Queen on it (aka Anastasia, Will’s true love).
4. Will knew enough to tell Robin Hood about where to look for a clue about the Author (i.e. in the library beneath the clock-tower). Sure enough, that is where the Page 23 appeared to Robin Hood — a picture of a story that didn’t happen–of Regina and Robin Hood meeting in the fairytale tavern.
5. Will is now (conveniently) dating the town librarian.
6. We also know that Henry found a hoard of many empty books in the sorcerer’s house, but that they don’t belong to him. They belong to the author, who is someone else besides the sorcerer. What if Author who wrote Henry’s book has written many different books, including Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Oz’s Book of Records? We still don’t know how Will ended up back in SB. Well, what if the reason Will is back in SB, rather than in WL with his true love, Anastasia, is because someone tampered with the book–not Henry’s, but Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland? What if Will is himself now trying to find the Author to course correct the events so that everything that happened in Once Upon a Time in Wonderland is preserved? What if Will is dating Belle, and consequently, spending loads of time in the library, as a way of trying to find the Author? I’m still hoping Will is looking for a way home back to Anastasia.

I think you could be on to something. Will is a bit of a con man on top of a thief, like when he conned RH and Merry Men to infiltrate Mal’s castle so he could steal the looking glass.
It actually makes more sense to me that he’s using Belle to possibly get back to Anastasia (If the red queen is still alive). Something tells me Belle still has a few hits to take this season.
The fact that he directed Robin Hood to the library to look for clues really supports your theory. It could be more significant than we realize.
Honestly, it also makes me wonder if Will could actually be the Author. What’s more probable? That a page magically appeared to Robin Hood, or that Will left it for Robin Hood to find. This would probably mean that Will is in league with the Sorcerer. At least, this really makes me think Will could know who the Author and/or Sorcerer is. I think he knows more than he’s telling.

I really hope that he is not tricking Belle. I really want he and Belle to work. Or at least, for Rumpbelle to fail…unless Rumple makes some huge sacrifice that proves to Belle that he does love her more than he loves power.

Which title do you mean exactly? Knave of Hearts? Merry Man? Will Scarlet?

I was thinking Knave of Hearts, if K&H wanted to parachute an avatar into the show.

Kind of like Rumple used Hook. Will is doing all of whatever he’s doing, following orders and in return his love will be returned to him.
I’d hate to think this because if this is the case because then he’s going to end up crushing Belle. (Can’t she get a break???) But I could see Adam and Eddy thinking this is all romantic. Not only do they not know how to write women, they don’t really know romance very well.

Interesting theory. I also couldn’t help noticing last episode that when Belle was super into that chocolate cake, Will really wasn’t. It kind of parallels but is the opposite to the RumBelle hamburger date where Belle was super into trying a hamburger and Rumple just went along with it.
Also I think we had major signposting last episode that there may be more to Will than what’s happening. Mainly Belle saying “he’s who he says he is” and “he makes me smile”. Those lines fit right in with “I’ll be right back” and “At least it can’t get any worse”.
The only way they can maintain sympathy for Will, if he is indeed playing Belle, is for him to have been coerced into doing what he’s done (like you said, by someone threatening to harm Ana unless he’s done as he’s told. Even Belle could be sympathetic to that when he’s apologised and explained everything. If Will is just stringing Belle along to get back to Ana when she’s not in harm’s way, then he loses a lot of respect.

I’ve been wondering if the somone who might be using Will to do his bidding could be Jafar. My reasons for saying so are four-fold. (1) Jafar didn’t die at the end of WL, but merely got trapped in a bottle as a genie. (2) Jafar would want revenge on Will Scarlet and Anastasia for getting the better of him. (3) Will Scarlet was brought onto the parent show in S4 with an air of mystery as to why he’s there. (4) There has been a lot of speculation that the new big bad of S5a is going to be Jafar.
So it could stand to reason that Will is in town because of something Jafar did to Queen Anastasia and is, once again, wreaking havoc in WL. Besides Will just being a popular character, perhaps the underlying reason why he was introduced early in S4 while his presence remains a mystery , is because the writers are going to use Will’s story and history in WL as a way to introduce Jafar to SB in S5.
