Besides the shows you named, @RumplesGirl, The Fosters, Orphan Black, Bones, Chicago Fire, The Good Wife, Rookie Blue, Under the Dome, Defiance, Lost Girl, Pretty Little Liars, Warehouse 13, True Blood, Teen Wolf, Sirens come to my mind (broadcast and cable). Not counting internet series like Orange is the New Black. Looks like some.
Thanks. I was sticking with broadcast because they play by some different rules than cable (and certainly Netlfix) does. Of those you listed: 4 are broadcast. Which brings the total to 11.
I know there is progress. I’m not saying there isn’t. But now that I’m looking at this list of broadcast shows, it’s sort of like…”well, why hasn’t ONCE?”
Red. With Mulan. Something I had on mind even before they let Mulan nearly confess her love to Aurora and thus made her officially lesbian (or bisexual)
Those two would be good together.

Not so thrilled by the idea to bring in new characters, if so, at least pair them with an already introduced character.
I agree. At this stage of the game, the audience cares more about the established characters rather than any new characters. This was the problem with MAP in Broken. Nobody cared about MAP because they were seen as taking screentime away from the already established characters that everyone loved. Had MAP’s introduction been left to when Snow and Emma got to the EF then they would’ve probably been more well received.
Of course there are characters not introduced yet that people still want to see, but people don’t want new characters taking screentime away from their favourite characters. Any “new” characters that people have grown to love or at least accept have been introduced as part of an existing character’s backstory. For example: Belle, Baelfire, Hook and Milah were introduced as part of Rumple’s backstory.
Pan and Felix were introduced as part of Hook’s and Baelfire’s backstories. Wendy, John and Michael were introduced as part of Bae’s backstory.
Tinkerbell, Jefferson and Cora were introduced as part of Regina’s backstory. Whale’s true identity was revealed as part of Regina’s backstory.
Neal was introduced as part of Emma’s backstory.
Ariel was introduced as part of Snow’s backstory.
GOAT were tolerable when they shared screentime with the established characters but the moment they started getting scenes all to themselves, they were seen as taking valuable screentime away from established characters. There’s a reason why Selfless, Brave and True is one of the weakest episodes of season 2.
I do think if Once does include a same-sex relationship on the show, it will likely be between a new character and an already established character. That way the new character is not taking time away from established characters, it gives chance for the new character to then become an established character, then new characters can be introduced as part of that now established character’s backstory.
So the question is which established character might they put into a same-sex relationship with a new character?

It would have to be an established background character, though, because all our regulars are shown to be in heterosexual relationships or at least interested in one.
Hook loves Emma. (Emma’s a hot mess but both her on screen suitors are men)
Regina and Robin are together
Belle and Rumple are together
Snow and Charming are together
Henry, IMO, is too young to be dating either gender. And for the most part his storyline is more “save Henry from this years Big Bad” and I’m not sure how well the writers can do coming-of age and coming-into sexuality stories with a character they haven’t really developed beyond being “the believer” and the person everyone tries to rescue.
So if they do an established character + new, then the established character would be one of the lesser ones: Archie, one of the dwarves, Whale. Tink, Ruby.
Which means that the same sex relationship would be downplayed. It would get one episode where the two meet and connect and fall in love but then it would be shunted off to the side and only hinted at in passing conversations or scenes where the town came together.
Of the possible lesser characters, I’d say Archie was most likely (even thought it’s not my favorite choice because it feels too obvious). The dwarves get screen time, but it’s usually Grumpy or Sneezy. I think Grumpy is difficult because they established his love with Nova. Sneezey, who knows. Whale is off to another show, as is Tinkerbell. Ruby is a maybe, since Intelligence won’t be renewed. They could bring Meghan back for more. Jamie’s new show Believe isn’t fairing too well so they could bring her back in as well if Ruby/Mulan was a thing they wanted to try.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"May 4, 2014 at 10:24 am #266148Twice Upon A TimeParticipantQuite honestly the lack of a clearly established LGBT character on OUAT in my opinion has nothing to do with ABC but with the writers because if just look within ABC nearly all of their most shows past and present has a same sex couple
‘Scandal
Grey’s Anatomy
Modern Family
Revenge
Happy Endings
General Hospital
Lost- to an extent
Suburgatory
And these are just those of which I know of – so why can’t OUAT just come out with a LGBT character that is clearly LGBT
Also I found this list of every LGBT character on TV past and present
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LGBT_characters_in_television_and_radio
There are quite a few

Thanks for all that information!
Which brings me back to a question I asked a few pages ago…is it Disney? Disney moves a little slower, for whatever reason. Or is it really the writers?
If Adam and Eddy are “waiting” then I want to know what they are waiting for, I guess.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"May 4, 2014 at 9:37 pm #266301Crystal PrincessParticipantDoes anyone have an actual link to where Eddy said no? Also you are aware showrunners can and will lie so they don’t spoil potential future plans, or that plans can change for a long list of reasons? It just bothers me that people act like it’s set in stone. For all we know they went to one of Lana’s LGBT ally talks and it inspired them. Who knows. It’s just not fair to nuke a ship like that either way.

May 4, 2014 at 9:43 pm #266304Crystal PrincessParticipantAlso RumplesGirl you missed Cosima & Delphine on Orphan Black, to be fair. What’s interesting about that romance too is that it’s also under very “shady” circumstances, and one of them has never thought themselves as being interested in a same sex relationship until them.

May 4, 2014 at 9:47 pm #266306Crystal PrincessParticipantalso I’m going to like rock the boat even further by suggesting there be some hits at a polyamorous relationship – something Wicked touched on a long as time ago – Elphaba’s parents were both in love with Turtle Dove, and if things had gone better you basically would have ended up with Elphaba/Glinda/Fiyero(esp. in the musical).
Fitting for a show who’s central mythos come from a woman who lived with 7 men.

Sure, but like I said, I was focusing on Broadcast not Cable.

like i kind of feel depressed talking about this in some ways partly because i don’t feel like it’s going to happen(at least not the characters I feel work together) and partly because i realise we’re only just talking about this; how far away are we from seeing a trans character(i.e. someone like me) on a show like this? I guess we’re a bit rarer but being trans in of itself potentially has so much fairytale like stuff in it.
I would love if it turned out Ruby was trans somehow, on top of being a werewolf. Meghan Ory is really beautiful in in a kinda androgynous way so it would work. Cue “time of the month” jokes and Granny feeling awful about calling her a drag queen.
It’s one thing that kind of hit me when they said “It’s a boy!” part of me kind of went ho-hum. I think gendering of babies is kinda weird anyway, they’re babies. Attaching mostly somewhat abstract concepts to them(blue for boys, pink for girls etc.) when they’re functionally just noisy flesh cushions you have to keep pumped up with milk is kind of creepy in a way, like grooming a child so it turns out a certain way. Weirdly before the turn of last century the gender of a child was often kept unknown at first.
that said i feel like lesbian representation is more important because at least i can identify with cis female characters especially if they have trans-ish narratives(being born different in some way like Ruby, Elphaba etc.). i can’t really headcanon a straight romance into a queer one in the same way. romance is kind of an active thing you’re engaged in whereas gender/sex can be something that’s kept hidden.
