I’m really upset about this news. If Sebastain Stan can’t return, then write the Mad Hatter out. I can pretend he’s living with Grace in his too large house and if we never find out about Alice and Wonderland than so be it. I don’t want other actor!
I agree!!!! 👿 This will the 2nd person right August and now the Mad Hatter. Maybe this show should never have signed these guys up in the 1st place if this was going to happen. I never did like replacement characters I always compared them to the orginal ones.

According to this article… http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/once-a-time-mad-hatter-423603
they will apparently be recasting him for OUAT later this season as well due to conflicting schedules. To say I’m heartbroken is an understatement, I love Sebastian Stan as the Mad Hatter. He’s by far my favorite version other than Andrew Lee Potts and I seriously doubt they’d bring him in since he played it in Syfy’s mini-series of Alice.Yeah I loved Andrew Lee Potts in the role as well but his Mad Hatter was much different that Sebastian Stan’s. I think it’s a big mistake to recast Stan myself…just can’t imagine anyone topping his performance.

They’ve gotta book work for the rest of the time too and unless somebody can show them we need you for this episode here here and here, they’re just out doing something else and sometimes they get bigger parts or have scheduling conflicts. The writers still have stories to tell and I guess they weren’t able to get him back between projects. I always thought he’d be an easy one to get for the few times he pops in because of his relationship with Jennifer Morrison but I guess not.
As upsetting as it is, just remember it wasn’t recasting for the heck of it. It seems to just be an issue with the scheduling (hopefully they’ll learn from this…) and we need to be supportive of the show / the actors who come into it.
As for the spin-off…sounds like they’ll be doing a backdoor pilot and we’ll be able to see whether people actually liked what they SAW vs heard / read about. I’m iffy as to why they even need one or what it could possibly deal with, but want to give it a chance out of support for the main show. Trusting the casting department to get somebody awesome that will stick around for the remainder of the show if the part is important enough to recast to bring the character back.
We need to show the network how much we love OUAT and that it needs to stay around for a long, long time. Hopefully the recasting of a popular but rarely seen character won’t drive people away.
I’m guessing the storyline is going to be important and only Jefferson can fill the role they needed to end out the season and the actor seems to be pretty booked up for awhile so there would be no promises of just putting it off for a bit when he may just not be able to do it or doesn’t want to for whatever reason. I doubt that they were happy about doing this and they know how passionate the fanbase is.

February 23, 2013 at 3:44 am #175017sarah_tnParticipantFinding another actor who can do good a job as Sebastian will be possible. They can find somebody to fill the role. Finding somebody who will fill it well though, and who will be accepted by the audience, is a tough order. He’s going to have to be a good pick for this to make the grade.
February 23, 2013 at 4:16 am #175022CrownedWithLaurelsParticipantWOW. Sad news! He played it absolutely perfect. He wasn’t too strange, just what “Mad hatter” describes. Normal but when faced with the impossible challenge of getting home to his daughter, almost too smart for his own good, and too much of his…smartness.. surging in trying to get home to his daughter.. anyway. Sorry if that’s confusing. But seriously. HE IS JUST TOO GOOOOOD!

February 23, 2013 at 4:23 am #175026obisgirlParticipantJust read this story. At first I was like, Whoa? A series about The Mad Hatter and the lead will not be SS?
It worked with Arrow.
But I would be sad if the Mad Hatter were recast on OUAT because the actor is unavailable.
February 23, 2013 at 4:49 am #175037heatherc1275ParticipantI don’t think I can get on board with a spinoff right now and I definitely don’t want to see Jefferson recast with someone else. Sebastian is SO good in that role and it would be hard to accept someone else. Maybe several years down the line it could work but with OUAT still going on now, this just doesn’t seem like a good idea. Just say no ABC! 😕
#MoreBOOMLessGloomFebruary 23, 2013 at 4:50 am #175038laurieanneParticipantSebastian Stan is currently starring on Broadway. The problem is that he is too good at what he does, and is in high demand. Good for him, bad for us. I agree that this is a difficulty with getting so many high quality actors for the show–having so many good actors that they can’t all have their “moments” nor can they just be expected to sit around “in case” OUAT needs them. The creators want to tell a lot of stories, and even the original actors suffer at times with being underused. I have read criticism many times over having too many “filler” story lines but I think that if you were an actor on this show, you would probably want to do more than just show up from time to time in Storybrooke, attend parties etc. I will definitely miss SS as the MH. I also think someone else could do the role, so I don’t want to see the character go away because I really like him and think there is more to find out about him and Grace.

Hopefully their casting department does an amazing job so that after SEEING it we’re at least torn, whereas right now pretty much everybody will hate the idea. I feel for whoever takes the role after seeing such backlash before they’ve been given a shot. Just hard to imagine anybody else as Jefferson right now.
Agreed. I wouldn’t wanna be the guy who has to fill Sebastian’s shoes if this re-cast is definitely happening.
I’ve been looking forward to seeing some more of Jefferson’s story. Been hoping we’d eventually get the Mad Hatter’s teaparty, but in all my ponderings of what they may do with the character, I’d never figured there’d have been enough material for a whole spin off show. Unless they plan to show his hat traveling adventures through all those doors, but then, wouldn’t that take away from storylines they could integrate into OUAT?
Obviously they have a grand plan for both OUAT and this potential spin off, and I dunno the first thing about writing a TV show, so can’t pass judgement before seeing what they actually do, but my initial reaction is not to be super excited about the prospect, especially because Sebastian IS Jefferson, he IS our Hatter, and seeing someone else try to replicate that role would be a bummer.
I’d rather they just found a way to fit the occasional OUAT ep into Sebastian’s schedule. The article makes it sound like the only reason for the re-cast is because Sebastian couldn’t commit to the spin off, not that he couldn’t still commit to occasional appearances if they just stuck with that. How much would it suck if the spin off fails, but they still keep the new Hatter on OUAT, and we ended up losing Sebastian for nothing.
February 23, 2013 at 5:28 am #175047Killian JonesParticipantA spinoff already? Isn’t that a little much right now? And secondly why bother if Sebastian Stan isn’t gonna be able to do it?
