    Nope, it’s not.
Take a closer look at the tracing paper, he is written “Cassidy” there. No confusion with the real “Neal Cassady” from the Beat generation. They aren’t the same person.

The wanted poster in Tallahassee spelled it with an I:

But the press releases where the character’s name was announced spelled it with an A:

Jane confirmed in one of her tweets, when someone was asking whether he’d be THE “Neal Cassady” with a simple “no”.
Not sure, but I guess the press release accidentally spelled it wrong. 🙁

    Thank you Phee 🙂

So, either way, we’re all right 🙂

I knew I saw it spelled with an ‘a’ in the press release.
I immediately recognized the name from the movie w/ Ken Keasey and the Grateful Dead and the Dead songs.
One of my favorite Dead songs is Cassidy….they spelled it with an i because it’s about Neal Cassady’s death, but also about Cassidy Law…a newborn addition to the GD at the time the song was written…song about Life and Death….maybe that’s why they used both spellings in the show.

I don’t think he’s THEE Neal Cassady, but I doubt ABC spelled it wrong. They spelled it with an a in the character list, also.

And there are a lot of Peter Pan connections to the name…NY City, The Grateful Dead, Geronimo Jackson…..

I went and rewatched the scene when he introduces himself to Emma – he clearly says Cassidy.

Thanks for your research Hummingbird, Evil Queen and others. You’ve confirmed what I found out a while back. When I first started posting about Neal I spelled it with an “a” but then I realized that the official spelling is an “i”. I thought I would do one more check and the official character page on ABC’s Once Upon a Time site does spell his name with an “i”…Neal Cassidy. http://beta.abc.go.com/shows/once-upon-a-time/blogs/character-tales/neal-cassidy

Although Neal Cassidy is not supposed to be the real life Neal he is very much a nod to the real life Neal Cassady and the various authors, musicians etc that used him as a character or as inspiration.

Cassidy pronunciation: [k ae s ih d ee] like in key at so it do see
Cassady pronunciation: [k ah – s ah – d ee] like in key car so car do see

there is a difference and it’s especially obvious to non-english speakers (as every language has their own set of ‘sounds’ that people who use it can differentiate – in here the vowel change might be very minor and subtle for the english natives but it can sound like a huge difference for some others)

What I meant was, I have heard Neal Cassady’s name mentioned….Magic Trip documentary….Live Grateful Dead concerts….interviews with ppl he knew/worked with and it is pronounced the same, despite the spelling.
