Why does the Dark Swan need Zelena’s help in wielding the apprentice’s wand?
Emma (to Zelena): “You’re the only one around who has wielded Merlin’s magic and lived to tell about it. If all goes according to plan, I’ll need your help.”
In 5×1, only Zelena could use the apprentice’s wand, because “it must be wielded as it was forged, with both sides of the coin. Light and the dark.”
But, Emma has light and dark magic in her, too, as we saw when she used both to free Merlin. So why does Emma need Zelena to wield the wand? What is Emma’s plan and how does it involve using Merlin’s magic?

It’s a clean slate as they say, and the wand was used to transfer out Emma’s dark potential as as a fetus, maybe it can be used to transfer it into the baby…or used to transfer light magic out of the baby…or something?

This is actually the more interesting part of the conversation for me. So anyone who wields Merlin’s magic dies? Does that mean that whatever plan Emma has cooked up–I guess reuniting the dagger and Excalibur–will single her death? And Emma seems to know this.

So, in reply to my own question, I think Emma’s plan is obviously to use the apprentice’s wand to re-forge Excalibur. Perhaps Emma thinks she can use it for good, although Merlin did warn that doing so even for good reasons would lead to bad consequences.

Yes, she does. Yet, Emma is immortal, so in theory, she wouldn’t even have to worry about possibly dying from reuniting Excalibur. (Unless Excalibur is the exception, much like the dagger). So why does Emma need Zelena’s help? Is Emma trying to lure Zelena to her death? Zelena did bring up killing Neal again. Maybe Emma is trying to get revenge. (Unlikely, but Zelena did bring it up).

Regina didn’t die. She wiggled around in the air for a bit and nothing happened.
I guess it is anyone with a substantial amount of darkness in them vs light dies? Or something?
It makes no sense…so confused.

That’s because she didn’t have any “wicked” in her (ie: they needed to find a way to insert Zelena into the narrative). And once Zelena activated it, Regina simply directed it.

Yeah, you have just confirmed my suspicion in the post above.

I don’t see them having Emma plotting to kill a pregnant woman. If not for that part of it, I’d be totally OK with Emma plotting some revenge that would result in Zelena’s death. Maybe Emma can zap the fetus into Regina’s womb and then kill Zelena? #onlyhalfjoking
Seriously though, uniting the blade means uniting the light and the dark, so I guess it makes sense if the combination of dark from Zelena and the light from the baby is the type of magical being that can get it done.

According to the synopsis for 5×8, Zelena’s pregnancy is about to accelerate by a lot. So I’m thinking it’s actually possible that Emma could kill Zelena this season.

Something still doesn’t make sense to me: why Emma needs Z to use Merlin’s magic. Emma has both light and dark magic in equal measure. Anyway, now that we know Arthur used Zelena to tether Merlin to the sword hilt in Camelot, it seems reasonable to expect Emma will use Zelena to tether Hook to Excalibur. Or possibly, Emma will use Zelena to wield the magic of the apprentice’s wand.
