I have to wonder if they subverting your expectations by making him NOT be the hero as you would expect. (PS: nice call to Gendry)

Agree with both of these, esepically the last. I think WHEN Rumple comes back (not IF) he will be stripped of his DO’s curse and be something new–either non magical at all (and will have to learn to live with that) or something “lighter” in terms of magic. I see the first one happening more than the second, to be honest. I think Rumple’s arc has always been learning to be a man again.
Sorry in advance for having to put this with numbers… I struggle with quotations :S
To the first comment, Yep, probably… that is why i waited till PP was death… i expected something behind that story. (Even the Jason Ogg the smith of Lancre in Discworld is a nice guy, and Prattchet likes twisting everything XDD)
And to the second one, I think wiser could be understand that way, yes. Although I kind of prefer him having ‘white’ magic… there is a lack of good magic in Once, all we have are fairies, and being Blue their leader, ‘good’ is a big assumption (to me at least)

For instance icelandic fornaldarsögur and riddarasógur (you can find them in cheap penguin translations, or even online).
You also have the French Mort d’Arthur (death of Arthur, by Thomas Malory) or the Prophecy of Merlin.
In this respect, I was really fond of ‘The Mists of Avalon’ series.
andreth starkParticipantCould he be her real brother? I mean, if Regina’s first curse is reversed, then Snow and Charming had a baby who was not transported to our world… that can be this new guy.
I know it challenges reasoning, since then Emma would have never existed, but… an alternative past for those lost 29 years should have been created in some way. Plus, ‘Henry’s family increasing 2 more members’…that would make this guy his uncle.
Crazyness, I know…
andreth starkParticipantI’m taking Keb’s headcanon that Rumple was taken to the realm of Hades and Belle will rescue him.
I’d like to watch that… because then Belle would be Orpheus, and instead of playing the lire, she would move Hades&Persephone’s hearts as storyteller (her skills as librarian, you know)

Question: When August put his knife in his leg to prove that it was wood why didn’t he do that with Emma to convince her?
I suposse he didn’t because it didn’t work the first time. Even without bleeding, the doctor didn’t believe him. Why should Emma?
andreth starkParticipantI think almost all of Blackmore’s night band could remid me of OUAT.
But, now, i can think about these as example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkzFas0WZ2o -sort of young Cora’s though,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aj3pJni_DXE -Charmings, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpRRLd-7-0M -surprisingly, Milah/Hook, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMNgxUEEMDA-regina+curse, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZCiUEs_eZg -true love kiss. […] and so on. One could be listen this band’s musi for hours and almost eveery single song could be associated to OUAT.And, just to change the tone, these ones: this one reminds me of Rumpelstiltskin (in a way… always love those wizards ^^ for his Storybrooke counterpart, “sympathy for the devil” of the Rolling stones or Gun’s and roses) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z93SdirnzTw , and this one to all the parents who had leave their children during the show -charmings, Emma, rumpelstiltskin….- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUZeGFV8VVE
andreth starkParticipantMaybe it is just me, but Henry doesn’t look like having a balanced, or even well orientated personality.
Maybe because he has passed his whole life wondering what was going on around him, and then, adventure and lack of rules -to him- happened. And also, he is still a child… but besides all this thing of magic, i wonder, after watching the preview pics of Lacey, why does he finds so difficult to forgive Regina and start slowly a friendly relationship with her, while at the same time, he finds so easy to forgive Mr. Gold??
In Manhattan, for instance, he is all like “bleh, don’t worry, i’d forgive you if i were your son”, “Should i call you grandpa?”. But he knows what that man can do, what he has done… even before knowing who he was, he told Emma that “he was worse” than Regina.Besides, he himself has used magic -to avoid the danger of the fire room, to talk to Aurora…- to good goals, he should at least imagine that it can be used for good. -He even calls for help to Blue’s magic!-
So, I believe that all that thing i the will was just a fit of desperation; he wanted his family to be together and happy, and couldn’t handle the situation. Because after all, he is still a child.
andreth starkParticipantI have the feeling Henry is making a wish over the cake. A paralelism with Emma’s birthday in the pilot. And her wish -not to be alone in her birthday- became true. Now, there have been some instances of Henry wanting a “world without magic” -all that speech of “look what magic does to people, etc”- as his father did.
Maybe Henry is sending himself to the “land without magic” his father were first; Neverland? Not neccesarily in this very episode, but that could be a way to settle the plot to the season finale. And regarding that horrified look, i agree with what has been said previously: Tamara could be related to it someway.
Ah, by the way! I like Rumpelstiltskin+ Belle story, but as someone has pointed out -sorry, i’ve just read the whole post and can’t remember who was that- he looks more like a concerned father than like a worried partner. Even she looks more like “ok, man, i know you love me but just leave alone, right?” hope it is just a feeling at first sight, but it was kinda weird :S :S
andreth starkParticipantI’ve just read the chapter preview… I found it better than expected! I mean, i usually don’t like novelizations, since they tend to be a bit superficial. There are 3 things that would make me buy the novels -if i could- after reading the preview:
1.- It is the same story we watched in tv, exactly the same story, but adding some insight to the characters. It could be seen as a repetition, or as the waste of a chance to tell things that have not been told in the series… but i think it is a good start. It could be just me, but i like the story, and i like the characters, and i’m glad to have a chance to “develop my own characterization” of the characters i love. Of course i’ll always associate some details of the look or manierisms of the actors to them, but it is like…mmm… i don’t know, just that it would be weird to me watch, let’s say,The full monty, and think, “wait, is that a young stripper Rumple?”,or avoid disturbings thoughts as “Was Emma’s first job being part Dr. House’s team?”. Maybe just me, but i like this point: characters in my mind 😛
2.- I like the way the author uses the style. Emma’s PoV is quick, direct, contemporary. The sort of discourse you can find in a tale writen nowadays. While EF scenes are more like an overview, they are writen from SW PoV,.and still, are more impersonal,we are not inside SW. That is great, because you can feel the difference of time, place, world… just by read a couple of lines.
3.- This is more a wish; if the first book gets good results, they’d probably go deeper into the story, write details, develop secondary plots, or even new ones, give us different PoVs… i guess. i hope.
Sooo… if i find some way to buy it from Iceland, i’m doing it ^^
