Mr Gold does seem to spend more time in his shop, though that is an interesting point you brought up. I think Bae’s ball is a reminder for Rumple of why he’s done the things he’s done and why he has to play the “making a deal with the devil” facade. It’s almost like his “business” side. Whereas in the privacy of his own home, he can openly mourn for his lost love and let his softer side out, the side that nobody else gets to see.
I agree with you. The ball must be some kind of compass to keep him focused an on the right direction. That certainly would explain why he keeps it in his shop. A way to keep his child’s memory close to him all day.
And it’s sweet and sad to think that he mourned Belle for so long… and she was alive. Belle was innocent; while other characters had debts with the EQ, Belle’s only sin was to fall in love with Rumplestiltskin.
I wonder how long the Queen had Belle captive before the curse.
Belle and Rumple developed a sort of friendship where they were comfortable around each other and when he caught her after she fell off the ladder, they shared a moment, which they were both aware of because they both started acting awkwardly. They both obviously got over that awkwardness because Belle was asking Rumple about his son and Rumple felt comfortable enough to give Belle the rose.
They do seem to be quite comfortable with each other. The awkward moments they have are caused by the tension between them. I agree, they know something is happening. I remember Emilie mentioning that Belle fell for him fast and hard. Do you think she was the first one to develop feelings for him and that made her be so forward, trying to get to know him better, to break his walls and get closer to him?
Belle has a very “nurturing” nature, I think. And she’s very open about her feelings. I think she’s also the kind of person who likes to touch to express her feelings. We saw it with her father and Gaston, she touches them reasuringly. And I imagine she’d go around and randomly touching Rumple’s arm or shoulder, just to express her affection or gratitude any given day in his castle. I think that amazed him.
You know, come to think of it, every time I see that scene when Belle tells Mr. Gold she loves him, and then she throws herself to hug him, I wonder when was the last time someone hugged him like that. When was the last time he had that kind of closeness with someone, that physical contact… those few seconds must’ve been heaven to him. There was Belle, surprising him as always. π
[adrotate group="5"]autumnParticipantThank you, obisgirl. I’m glad to be here. π
I was watching “The Return” tonight and I noticed two things that made me think.
First, Mr. Gold has Bae’s ball and he keeps it in his shop. He keeps it in what I think is like a special display, but still in the shop. While he keeps Belle’s chipped cup in his home, closer to him. Of course Bae is special for him, everything he’s been doing has been for Bae. But I think the fact he keeps the cup in the safety of his home shows how much Belle really means to him.
And second, I noticed the way Rumplestiltskin treats his maid Onora. She acts very shy and nervous around him and then he dismisses her waving his hand, ordering her to go away. Of course, he was worried about her overhearing all the dagger thing. But still, I don’t think he ever treated Belle that way. Belle was the queen of the castle. She could just go and sit on his table and everything was alright. I have the feeling he didn’t want Belle to be his caretaker. Sometimes I believe he saw she was in danger living in his father’s castle, what with war and all, and that she was alone, trapped, ignored and maybe he genuinely wanted to help her, to set her free. I don’t know… just a random thought.
Anyway, have a great weekend everyone! π

Here’s another quote from Emilie!
Emilie: βBelle will likely not try to change Rumple, but bring out the lightness in him – the part only she seems to know exists within him. She is in love with him for his tortured soul and what she sees inside him. She will be perhaps less predicatable and a little darker: the effect of living with the darker character that is Rumple.β
Hello everyone!
I’m new around here and I’ve been reading this threat and loving it. I’m a big Rumple/Belle fan, so…
Anyway, I loved this quote. First of all, I really like Emily’s portrait of Belle. I couldn’t think of a better choice for that character. She’s my favorite female character in the show for many reasons. And that’s a tough choice in a show with such wonderful female characters!
She was very sweet and optmistic and she was basically a soul made of pure light. She certainly was the light that Rumple always lacked in his life. She blinded him. He said it himself: she was a brief flicker of light in his dark life.
And let’s consider one thing: I don’t think she had an easy life before Rumple. I mean, she was living a war and for what we can see, her father’s castle was under siege. She must’ve been scared but she was strong and she hoped for the best. So I think she has a very strong soul. Some might say she was all happy, giggly and optimistic because she was a princess and nothing bad had ever happened to her. I don’t think so. She was a person made of light because that was her nature. Despite of how hard life was, how dangerous, she was an optimistic.
So, I can see why she could survive her relationship with Rumple. I’ve noticed something: every time someone goes to him to ask for a deal, he explains things to them. They agree, they make the deal, he does his job… and when time comes for people to pay back, they are always unhappy, trying to get out of the deal and not fulfilling their part.
When Belle arrived in the castle, he told her what her chores would be. I kind of think he was expecting her to start complaining as everyone did with her part of the bargain. She didn’t. She knew she had accepted the deal and she was going to make her part. And I think that surprised him. I think she earned some respect from him.
She lived with him for two months and she brought light into his castle (I can see that metaphor when she takes down the curtains) and light into his life. She always has a smile or a gentle word for him. I don’t think that had ever happened to him before. He was surprised… and through kindness she tamed the beast.
Now, after all that happened afterwards and the fact she ended up being locked away for 28+ years, when her only sin was to love Rumplestiltskin, I can imagine she’d be shattered. I can imagine she was sad, confused, hurt. And of course that would make her darker. It’s hard to be all happy, giggly and optimistic when locked up in a dungeon like that.
But her soul is made of light. And eventually I think she’s going to go back to that. Because now that she’s going to be with Mr. Gold, he’s going to need that light. Or as Emily say, he’s going to need her to bright out the lightness within him. While searching for Bae, Belle needs to be “the part of him that keeps him human”. She always wanted to be a hero, well… I think this would be her ultimate quest.
So yeah… I think Belle will have to fight to keep her light shinning, for him. But in the end I truly believe she’s going to be his redemption and his salvation.
Anyway… I’m sorry for the long message. I just get very excited when analyzing these two characters I like so much. And thanks for having me in the forum! And I apologize for the mistakes in this text, for English is not my mother language. π
Have a nice day everyone! π

I know! That was my favorite part too! It was as if he had scene a ghost. But I guess in his case, he kind of was. He honestly believed that Belle had been dead for the past 30 years. Poor thing probably really did think he was staring at a ghost. π₯
Thanks for the welcome! π
You know, I was recently listening to this song called “Vision of you” from Lea Salonga (the singing voice of Jasmine and Mulan in the Disney movies) and it just made me think of this scene and the visions of Belle that Mr. Gold maybe had. You can look for the lyrics or/and the song itself. It’s very touching.
Another thing I’ve noticed is that Rumple/Gold calls Belle by her name. Rumple only calls her ‘dearie’ at the beginning of Skin Deep, while in her father’s castle and then later in the final scene in the dungeon. I think for him everyone is a ‘dearie’ but Belle was not an ‘everyone’. He saw her as someone worth of calling by her name. Only when he wants to pull away from her he goes to call her dearie again.
I don’t know, I just love those little details. π

I will say when Belle called his name, he seemed tentative and uncertain as to what she might say or do as he turned around. I think when she said she loved him he seemed relieved and able to let his guard down enough to return an I love you he had been longing to say for many years.
I loved that scene! Mr. Gold didn’t know what to expect when Belle told him that she remembered. Remembered what? That he yelled, went mad, locked her in the dungeon, accused her and then sent her away? Because if she remembered that (and of course she did), he was lost. And I can see that in his face: “What do you remember?”
Instead she just said those 3 words: “I love you!” She remembers all, but she chooses to love him above everything else. I think they need to have a serious conversation about what happened before. But to start with, Belle wanted to make sure to him that no matter what had happened before, she still loves him. She still believes in him. And there will be time for everything else.
I love that scene!
And you know what else I love? When Mr. Gold first sees her, during the whole scene he never blinks. I think he thought if he closed his eyes, even if only for a split second, she might disappear. I found it so sweet and meaningful.
Anyway, I’m new around here. I’m a rumbelle fan and I’ve been reading and loving this thread. Have a nice day everyone! π
