Welcome! Glad to meet another newbie to the show!
[adrotate group="5"]beautyistruthParticipantI completely agree with the boring paladin of good criticism! Mulan is one of my favorite princesses and she is so dull on this show. Flat one-liners, no sense of interiority, a few sage remarks. Bleh. Her character had better start becoming more dymanic, or I will be sad. Even Jiminy Cricket’s character is more interesting, and he is a freaking consience :/
beautyistruthParticipantWell, Bryonic héros are hardly heroes in the traditional sense. They can be all cowardly and flawed, and still enticing to us womenfolk 😀
beautyistruthParticipantActually it seems like Mulan and Aurora are some of the two characters who aren’t fighting for “love.” Aurora had Philip, yes, but she lost him. Right now she seems to just be trying to survive in torn-apart fairytale land. Same with Mulan. She seems mainly concerned surviving/helping others survive.
Also, Rumple’s entire game plan is to find his lost son. Does that make him disempowered?
beautyistruthParticipantYes, yes I am. I love that poem.
beautyistruthParticipantMe! Share plot ideas?
beautyistruthParticipantI sort of see them in the same boat as well, but I’m getting tired of the fan reactions. I’m beginning to realize why people found the Rumple vs. Regina race to redemption battle so irritating last season, and this is coming from somebody who is pretty heavily invested in them both being redeemed in realistic ways.
One thing that bothers me is the vastly different reactions there seem to be to Regina killing that girl and Rumple killing his wife. Both were somewhat pushed and goaded into it, but ultimately both -chose- to kill the other party. Both actions were bad, to put it mildly. Regina being disappointed about Daniel staying dead doesn’t justify her ripping a random girl’s heart out. Yet people use that scene as proof of how she was a poor, manipulated girl, where they read the scene with Rumple and Milah very differently. What a shocker. They’ve both made bad choices. /Rant
Also, as far as the manipulation argument goes, Regina was manipulated and taken advantage of by Rumple, but he was manipulated by Zozo. Doesn’t absolve either of them. They’ll have to actively work for their redemption.
Also, I think it’s key to mention that the two people who push Regina’s berserk button are trapped in FTL. Snow’s not around to remind her of Daniel, and Emma’s not around to make her jealous of Henry’s affections. At this point, she’s not even sure if she’ll ever see either of them again, considering that they’re not immortal and considering how long it took Rumple to find a way into our world. We know they’ll be back, as viewers, but the characters don’t.
beautyistruthParticipantAlso I hate to pull the race card, but I’ve always felt that Mulan is there because they wanted a token Asian character. Oh, who’s the one Asian princess? Mulan! Let’s just bring her in. That’s one meta-reason I don’t think she’ll turn out to be a traitor. I do hope they start doing something with her character, though…
beautyistruthParticipantI’m on it! I just acquired Premiere Pro and I need distractions while waiting for LSAT scores to come back. (Er… making a law-related video is a distraction?)
October 31, 2012 at 11:13 pm in reply to: WHAT OTHER FAIRY TALE CHARACTERS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE … #158826beautyistruthParticipantThat’s actually funny, considering Mulan is a fairytale character in the same way Joan of Arc is a fairytale character… both alleged to be real people from a period of time where the line between history and legend was extremely murky.
