Hands Bo a *Hookie cookie
In my best Carrie Bradshaw imitation: “Ooo, me likie Hookie cookies.”
Glad to see all your commentary, surayya! Always provokes thought and is much appreciated.
That suspension of disbelief thanggg that is present for all the characters that ONCE morphed from established fairy tales/literature is there in aces for Hook as well. I try to avoid preconceived concepts of who Captain Hook is suppose to be, because in this incarnation, Hook is what Colin makes him. Not so much a persona to turn off and on, but one to embrace and evolve with as life in this particular adventure, affects him. He IS Hook. Always will be from the moment he gained the actual hook and moniker.
I know many actors do a lot of researching while creating characters, and with such well-loved characters one has to be respectful as well as personally creative. The man he has created on the small screen is filled with complexity and emotions, some he wears very well and others torment him even as he gives in to them, temporarily.
His self-serving nature boils up from a very self-defensive trait. I think he shows himself as always being a man of certain honor and good form~ except when the anger gets a grip. Then he can trip, bigtime. The anger rationalizes the momentary slip from good form. He hasn’t been as angry lately, but if you aggressively challenge him or threaten someone he loves, methinks the fierce passion would give him no pause in doing what is necessary to vigorously respond.
Good Form doesn’t negate fierce passion, it tries very hard to live hand in (hook?) hand with it. I hope he never loses the soul of Hook. It made him the man he is now.
Oh, and present day Hook? to loosely quote Capt. James Lawrence…”Don’t Give Up the Ship!” He belongs on the sea, he deserves a life with/close to/involving it. Make it happen A&E, give him a commanding position attached to the sea. It IS a harbor in Maine (grin).

Bo-PeepsParticipantWellll, Jennifer didn’t say anything that Hook/Emma aficionados haven’t already seen, embraced and celebrated since the Beanstalk 😉 We knew it, we got it, it was alllll good even with the angst(grin). The minefield that “is/was other-character-fans’ personal re-writes and projections of their own fantasy and not A&E’s story” has mostly been deactivated/deadened over time. We, as fans, don’t have the privilege of edits or re-writes. The planned Once tale is what ultimately unfolded. While it is always Adam and Eddie’s story, not ours, thankfully, it turned out very favorably for the fiercely Romantic Hooksters and Swanites among us!
Fortunately, I didn’t see or read the Monte Carlo hate, so I am not sure what Morrison had to deal with (except that it had to be typically moronic and immature) but I am glad she is allowing herself to be happy about her Buttercup moment! She knows her character far better than any of us ever will, but even she can still be pleasantly surprised about how her script life will unfold. She got to smile, among other things (hubba hubba)
There is so much more to look forward to with these two. They have the potential to be much edgier, complex and (if they let it flow) more sensual than any other canon couples so far.

Bo-PeepsParticipant“They go through the highs and lows of that addiction but at no point is it outright stated on the show that it is an addiction.
They could probably write Hook having an alcohol problem in the same way. They won’t throw the word “alcoholic” or “alcoholism” around but they’d plant the little signs there.”
Yup, which, is basically what I said (small grin). We are on the same page about A&E.
However, they DID write Hook that way already with a lot of little comments and mini-snarks about his fondness for rum. Subtle commentary, undetected by a lot of the more youthful and less jaded viewers of the show who are not interested in soap opera style drama. But the commentary has been there all the same. The edge of darkness is quite often very quietly but poignantly shown in the *eye emoting* of many of the main actors. Colin is particularly good at that. As is Carlyle.
Regarding the ship, we have no evidence of what ship is referenced in the well publicized bleed through page of the script. Regardless, a ship is being built and if it isn’t The Jolly Roger, which is highly possible, that doesn’t change my hope that they keep it in the storyline. It is a great opportunity for future adventures or past flashbacks. If they do it now, or later, (or nevah evah again for any Hook related reason) The Jolly Roger would be a wonderful setting. And I am not sorry at all (grin).

Bo-PeepsParticipantMorning all.
in regards to the spoiler
the writers SHOULD bring back The Jolly Roger. The adventure potential is too good to pass up. Hook, now that he has selflessly sacrificed so much for Emma, deserves a chance to get his ship back, preferably with Emma’s willing and eager help. If the writers don’t see fit to go that direction with all their addiction to tortured angst and the fan girly Elsa frenzy, then flashbacks using BB would be awesome. (BB was shark bait so it wouldn’t be present day with his deliciously colorful character.) And unless they plan to kill off Hook, which would be really suicidal for the series at this point, our hooked hero needs solid story lines that give the character they have developed a chance to rev up the action/adventure angle.
A&E handled Hook’s self-medicating penchant for rum with enough subtlety to avoid going into the heavy duty problem of alcoholism. It was a carefully handled commentary on Killian’s character development without getting into the deeper psychological battles of addiction. Their bread and butter is sticking with the fantasy/magic/search for love angles. They have too much of the fantasy story to tell with all the other characters as well.

Bo-PeepsParticipantThe only thing we can be sure of is that there will be chaos and angst. And no doubt, considering their writing/series history, they will kill someone!
Year four will have to come up with some serious attention getters for everyone. They have set the scene for several potential barn burners as well as taking some very risky chances (and I am still holding out for new drama involving a still sailing Captain who in some form regains his ship along with a long haired, sassy, but equally as devoted as he is first mate.)
As the series goes on, ALL the actors will get the wanderlust of new gigs and potential professional challenges. It is the very nature of the profession. They need the challenges.
I’m putting on my viewer seat belt for a (hopefully)grand ride!

Bo-PeepsParticipantRegina’s heart was originally driven by deep love. Her descent into evil was particularly tragic due to the really evil mechanizations of Cora and Rumple, but she so willingly and thoroughly embraced the darkness, her redemption will, I think, be much more complicated. She goes all in no matter the emotion.
She is supremely good at being Evil. In a weirdly converse way, other characters have been able to count on that consistency. They build their “goodness” by comparison to her “badness” so her journey to the “light side” will be extra tough.
If one see’s her dark power/magic as her strength then Love seems to be her fatal flaw! Though it hasn’t proven fatal just yet, the writers have given themselves a unique and very risky plot line with Marian to test Regina’s will to regain her original love driven soul. (Which is how I see the entire arc of Regina’s character for the duration of the show…not a traditional family/fairy tale style happy ending necessarily, but regaining her original soul)

Bo-PeepsParticipantAs I see it, Hook was/is not evil, he was deeply wounded and profoundly angry. Because he acted out defensively and violently against the personally tragic and hurtful happenings of his life does not make him evil, but it did make him somewhat dangerous, passionately tortured and constantly struggling to overcome his seething anger ( which he often drowned with numbing alcohol or barricaded behind cocky attitude)
His destructive anger I.E. selfish quest for revenge was a flaw, but not fatal because it did not ultimately destroy him. He was able to conquer that toxic, internal driving force.
His loyalty, rapscallion aura, witty snark, natural charm and indomitable Good-Form spirit is deeply imbedded in his essential character and when not plagued/diseased by anger and hurt, will always be “who” he is.
***Always in search of a good flock***
Bo-PeepsParticipantYou all may well be right. Part of the revenge driven, booze soaked, tortured soul will be gone forever. And it is a healthy nod to the maturing of his character that he is beyond that. But I sincerely hope we never lose “the helluva Captain” Hook OR his tremendously rapscallion ways. Not for Emma…not for anyone (grin)
***Always in search of a good flock***
Bo-PeepsParticipantIt would be interesting to see Emma try to get the JR back
It would be more than interesting! It would be the ultimate gesture of love from Emma to Hook. Bringing The Jolly Roger back wouldn’t negate or diminish Hook’s sacrifice. That has already been validated and embraced by Emma. Having Emma help him get the ship back would solidify Emma’s self-less love for Hook. While I certainly understand the need for creating a new *space* together, The Jolly Roger has been re-created before, and could be again…with Henry included.
I am in the *Accepting it because* camp of fandom, because there is absolutely nothing I can do about any part of any script and I will never have control over anything, ever (grin). They will write what they want to write. BUT, all things considered it would add seriously to the balance of their relationship if Emma would step up and do something that would make Hook’s soul fuller. Not that she OWES him anything because he gave his life/heart/devotion/love willingly and openly. But it would be very cool.
