ParticipantGreat meta on CS/Han&Leia parallels – @obisgirl you’ll love this! From yaytessamae:
PARALLELS: HAN & HOOK AND HOW ANTI-HEROES ARE NOT VILLAINS
Be warned: this gets a bit long.So we all know that A&E are huge Star Wars fans. They’ve said this interviews and even said that in the scene above Hook “Han Solo’d back”. And as if my nerdy heart could swell anymore, they’ve called Emma their Princess Leia. This is old news. But great news, as well, it’s Han and Leia. HAN AND LEIA, my OTP of OTPs. But this isn’t what I’m here to bore you about.
I’m here about the parallels. And they are strong with these two handsome devils. Given the aforementioned Star Wars fanboyishness of A&E, this is no coincidence. But it’s not the only reason why I wanted to do this. I did this mainly because I cannot quite fathom HOW/WHY people still categorize Hook as a villain. He is not. At all. So hopefully by comparing him to one of the most beloved characters of all time, Han Solo, this argument can finally be laid to rest.
Han & Hook are classic anti-heroes. This is the greatest parallel between these two characters. It’s a characterization old as time, and Han Solo is one of the most famous in movie history. Hook is actually more of an Byronic anti-hero, Han is more of a lovable rogue, but that’s getting into nuance. Regardless, anti-heroes follow a very specific story arc and have very specific character traits. And it’s important for you to understand because, again, anti-hero DOES NOT EQUAL villain. Anti-heroes may commit villainous acts, but they are not villains.
So considering all of that, let’s get this parallel party started:
First their personas:
◦Most obviously, they’re both pirates. Duh.
◦Highly capable fighters. Dudes can kick some ass.
◦They hate buttoning things (see:)
◦Another obvious one: both are STUPID HANDSOME and know it, use it.
◦When we first meet them, they are completely committed to looking out for their own welfare and interests.
◦Neither are afraid to kill in pursuit of those interests.
◦Both characters heavily rely on sarcasm and deflection and smarmy remarks as a defense mechanism.
◦Both are rather isolated when we meet them. Han’s last name is Solo, for chrissake. George Lucas has never been known for subtlety. (Dark Father anyone?)
◦Both are VERY attached to their ships, as for them, it’s one of the few constants in their lives. It’s home.
◦Seriously, don’t mess with their ships.
◦Cynical. Neither initially buys into the ideals of the Classic Heroes, the optimism, the hope (the Force, ha). They openly sneer at it. When we meet him, Hook is very aware of his place in this tale— that he’s on a suicide mission and operates as such. The desperation in his acts and his ever-changing alliances show that he only believes in the most ideal option at his fingertips that will yield the most desirable results for his mission. He has no hope. Han, similarly, believes in nothing beyond what he can see/experience. He believes in the blaster at his side over hokey ancient religions. He doesn’t focus on the future, his ideals are all tied to what can benefit him the most at any moment, whether that’s money or protection or avoiding trouble with the Empire.
◦All of that aside, they are both exceedingly charismatic. Unlike Classic Villains, they are able to draw people to them. And they have let a select few in (Milah, Bae, Chewie).
◦They both express remorse and display a guilty conscious surprisingly easily. They are able to see their own mistakes and faulty reasoning, and change behaviors to rectify it.
◦Good leaders. (Well, once they accept that role) They wear authority well and inspire respect from those they lead.
◦Fearless. They tend to charge headfirst (Han in the hallway scene, literally) into danger’s path, almost rather recklessly. Again, this is probably because the live within the moment, have few obligations outside themselves.
◦As their stories unfold, this fearlessness morphs more into bravery, as emotional ties and responsibilities start giving them both pause at risking their safety but also more motivation to protect and fight for those they come to love.As for their stories (and obviously these are going to vary from each other a bit but the themes remain the same):
◦Both characters get involved in the battle between good and evil, but not because they believe in a particular side’s cause, but again, for the sake of their own interests. (Han: $$ to pay Jabba, Hook: revenge)
◦Ultimately they both find the inspiration to be a part of something larger than themselves.
◦Spoiler alert: this “inspiration” is a person, or really even a couple of persons.
◦This scares them, they quickly revert to selfishness and run.
◦They both have a change of heart.
◦They both come back, join the cause of good, virtually abandoning their original self-focused quests.
◦Now back that those “inspirations”.
◦One is someone that eventually they come to value as a BFF. AND DON’T EVEN SIT THERE AND TRY AND ARGUE THAT CAPTAIN CHARMING ISN’T HAPPENING AND PART OF THE REASON FOR HOOK’S TRANSFORMATION THIS SEASON BC I WILL END YOU.
◦Huff. Sorry. A lots of feels about my brOTP, ok? Continuing.
◦So the other inspiration. She’s a princess. They like her. They banter with her. They fight with her. They make wounded puppy eyes at her.
◦Princess feigns disinterest, but the chemistry is palpable.
◦And not to get too far into the Emma/Leia parallels, as that is as whole separate post, but it’s no coincidence that even these dude’s TL’s are so similar. These ain’t no wallflower princesses sitting in a tower. Sisterfriends GET STUFF DONE. They carry great responsibility and authority, and are on the front line of the war being waged. In other words, they kick ass. They make the dudes want to kick ass alongside her.
◦Eventually our pirates go on a mission/adventure with their Princess.
◦They bond and get to know her better, they build mutual trust.
◦They continue to be very sassy with her. (Der.)
◦Sexual tension FOR DAYS, y’all.
◦This finally builds to a kiss.
◦Cute, flirty, mirroring banter preludes the moment.
◦”I happen to like nice men.” “I’m nice men.”
◦”Please. You couldn’t handle it.” “Perhaps you’re the one who couldn’t handle it.”
◦(Seriously people, it’s even in the details like that.)
◦KISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS (and I die, both times)
◦Both women are the ones to flee afterwards.
◦Both dudes even do the “wait what? come baaaack” face as the women go.
◦After, they now seem to be in an unspoken partnership with their ladies.
◦They are more openly affectionate towards them (at least in dialogue for Hook, but Han does get a little handsy, bless him).
◦Now, this next one plays out at very different points in their respective stories, but there is a (sarcastic quotes) “love triangle” between the pirates, the princess, and a friend of the pirate.
◦Both pirates make their feelings known, but allow the princess the autonomy to make her choice.
◦THEY BACK OFF.
◦Princess chooses them. //cackles maniacally
◦Suddenly, they are parted.
◦The parting involves someone being sent/taken away against their wishes. They don’t want to go.
◦FEELINGS CONFESSION TIME.
◦”I love you.” “I know.”
◦”Not a day will go by I won’t think of you.” “Good.”
◦SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
◦Quick pause to thank the lawd baby Jesus for sending us Harrison Ford, for he was the creator of this whole type of amazing feelings exchange. He literally refused to read what Lucas has written (which, in typical terrible Lucas dialogue-style, was ‘I love you, too’), believing it didn’t fit Han’s personality, and BOOM. I KNOW. //swoons forever
◦Seriously, the exchanges are just so perfect for all characters involved at both points in both stories. Like perfect perfect. Siiiigh.
◦Following the Great Parting, the one taken away is retrieved by the other.
◦When they are reunited, another kiss!
◦(This obviously worked out better for Han than Hook, lolololz)
◦Time for more adventures together!
◦But now things are COUPLEY muaahahaha THEY ARE A TEAM.I’m ending the story parallels here because we are not nearly as far into Hook and Emma’s tale as we got in Return of the Jedi.
(Even though current spoilers are only helping to buoy all of this, I don’t want to parallel things that haven’t happened yet.)
BUT.
Considering all of this, and assuming the ridiculous paralleling continues, I suspect we will see the following coming up from our dear Captain Swan:
◦More smoochies
◦Huggies (lalalala WHATEVER COULD I BE TALKING ABOUT)
◦Super trust bond forming (LALALALALALALA CAPTAIN COBRA)
◦Emma pulling a Han and cutely telling Hook about her feelings for him (like how Han said ILY first to Leia on Endor and she pulled the whole I KNOW) Guh.
◦Lots of adventures.
◦Them bringing out the best in one another.
◦Eventually them helping to save the world together, side by side.
◦Getting married, having babies who continue on in their awesome legacy
◦TRUE LOVE FOREVER THE END//collapses
