Overall I would give this episode an A for enjoyment. It was fun and a payoff for fans who have been asking for a musical episode for a long time. And I think, for the most part, it was executed pretty well.
Powerful Magic was one of the most Disney things I have ever heard. It sounded like something straight out of a Disneyland parade, and I loved every second of it! For how nervous she said she was about singing I thought Ginny was great! Her humor and warmth really shone through in their song and it reminded me of how much I love Snow and how I have missed her being more involved in recent seasons. Josh Dallas… what a voice! Smooth as silk, and charming as ever.
Love Doesn’t Stand a Chance was fun and the style of it fit the Evil Queen’s character very well. While Lana’s vocals didn’t blow me away I thought her PERFORMANCE was very good! She had the most choreography of all the cast and she didn’t stop acting just because she was singing, which I thought some of the others struggled with. I could have done without the profanity but overall it was a solid number.
Revenge is Gonna be Mine was a pirate rock ballad and worked very well with Hook’s character and it really showcased Collin’s voice. My criticism would lie in his performance of it. I felt like it lacked energy and intensity, especially compared to Lana’s performance. For someone singing about desperately needing his revenge he sounded awfully chill.
Wicked Always Wins was one of my favorites. Bex sounded great and her performance was very good too. It felt a little random in the context of the story and timeline, and that music stealing box was kind of ridiculous, but I loved the song and I am willing to put up with the flimsy plot to keep it.
The Charmings vs the Evil Queen was lame. Just a rehash of what we already heard. I agree with others who said it would’ve been nice to have something new for their face off. Felt kind of lazy.
Emma’s theme…I don’t understand this scene. It felt so unnecessary and clumsy. I liked hearing JMo sing and I liked that the melody was familiar to us from 6 seasons of music from the show, but the whole thing about the song in her heart somehow enabling her to fight the Black Fairy was really anti-climactic and confusing. Nothing happened! And her realization that she wasn’t alone…I’m sorry, but hadn’t she already figured that out?!
A Happy Beginning was my favorite song of the episode. It was beautiful and I loved hearing everyone contribute, even Henry! It gave me all kinds of feels and being part of the wedding celebration just capped off the whole episode so well.
If they don’t have a stage version of this in the Disney Parks this summer I will be shocked. It felt very on brand and, like I said, plot weakness aside it was a very entertaining episode.

It was the first time in several weeks that I wasn’t shaking my head at the character’s nonsensical logic or horrendous ret-conning by the writers. Yes we had to endure ANOTHER magical McGuffin, but at least it was used to provide character development for Zelena. I thought they were going to put the Crimson Heart into the Blue Fairy to wake her up, like jump starting a car with the magic from Zelena.
Likes:
-I liked that they addressed the tension between Regina and Zelena, it has been so long since they have talked about it that I was starting to forget what it was about. And Z made a good point about how she sacrificed Hades to save Regina, it helped me feel more sympathetic towards her.
-The Black Fairy. She’s fabulous and I’m really enjoying her. I thought her manipulation of Zelena was clever and worthy of a supposedly formidable villain.
-All the wedding planning drama. It was fun, and light, a good balance to the other drama in the episode. And yet it was still important and on topic. Good tie-ins to season 1 and addressed the underlying theme of living in the moment even when facing trials.
-The Black Fairy talking to Regina about the Dark Curse. She said something like, “So you’re the one who cast my curse? No wonder it didn’t go well.” That made me laugh.
Dislikes:
-The glowing pen. Since when?!
-Regina was too harsh with Zelena when she told her to go back to Oz. I didn’t like that, but maybe it’s more true to Regina’s character than we’d like to believe. We know she can hold a grade (Dark Curse anyone?)
Overall I thought it was a decent episode. Looking forward to the remainder of the season!
Chelsea DongParticipantIf Nova falling in love with Dreamy (Grumpy) was against fairy rules imagine how much trouble the Black Fairy would have been in for getting pregnant! Perhaps she was banished for it?
