May 9, 2016 at 4:00 pm in reply to: THR 5/9 – OUAT Departing Star Isn't Happy With How His Story Ended #323243CorbinParticipant
Reading these interviews, it makes me wonder: how do the writers live with themselves after doing this?
I mean, seriously? I would feel terrible with myself as a writer if, after promoting an actor to series regular and him moving his family over, seemingly secure in his job, I give him no development/centrics and just flat out murder him. And it’s not even just murder – he was wiped from existence! No afterlife or anything!
You want to service all your characters, of course. But the position of series regular isn’t just an average position – you’re a main character! How do these writers live with themselves when they’ve done it four times now?! Meghan Ory, MRJ, Michael Socha, and now Sean – four talented actors that have come out and said that their stories were ended abruptly/weren’t properly developed.
If I was writing for these people and responsible for their lack of development, I wouldn’t be angry at their words; that wouldn’t be right. I’d be ashamed with myself as a writer, wondering how I allowed myself to give these actors false hope in both character development and job security.

CorbinParticipantI REALLY don’t like the recycling of storylines. 5A was 3A. 5B was 3B (and some of 3A). It looks like 6A is going to be what 2B was going to be. With the return of The Dragon (which, while certainly opening up some development for the character, is a completely unexpected return), I agree with Matt: they’re going back to the “destroy all magic” plot. That’s…annoying, to say the least.

CorbinParticipantIf I may ask, is there anything behind-the-scenes that could cause Sean to leave? I mean, while a lot of the MRJ drama was denied, it made a lot of noise (certainly a lot more than the “Sean assaulting a make-up artist” rumor) at the time.
Because, if not, it really makes no sense for Robin to die. With Neal, however ridiculous as his death was, there was at least SOME resolution. Emma had a second love interest, he died to save his father, he ended up leading Hook to Emma, etc. Of course, he should’ve had some more closure with Henry, but at least you could believe that this was his end.
In Robin’s case, it makes less sense for him to die. He was confirmed as Regina’s soulmate in S3, he led Regina to love even without her heart in 3×18, and he still harbored love for her when he left with “Marian” in 4×11. He has no competing love interests, is invested in multiple characters’ lives, and has become a close member of the Charming/Mills family. There isn’t any reason that Robin should die other than the writers’ saying, “Oh, we need a death! A real death! Because that’s a thing that happens!”
I know my questions are pointless, but I really wonder what thoughts go through the heads of the writers (and I fear they may be ones of misogyny).

April 10, 2016 at 9:24 pm in reply to: FAVORITE AND LEAST FAVORITE MOMENTS from 5 x 17 HER HANDSOME HERO #321261CorbinParticipantThis is an interesting episode, only because I look at it as the second part of a Rumbelle character study. “Devil’s Due” gave us the study of what kind of man Rumple is (in the most on-the-nose fashion), recalling a love from his past and how it affects his persona now. “Her Handsome Hero” dealt with how Belle reacts to the man Rumple is, forcing her to contemplate the morality of magic. Can “dark” magic be used for good? Can you change who you are?
LIKED:
– Hades continues to be a standout character. Is he my favorite villain? No, but I love Greg Germann’s portrayal of him as this suave, “distinguished gentleman.” It’s intriguing, especially because the show isn’t forcing a backstory down our throats with him.
– Belle got some stuff to do! I’ve liked Belle as a character and have always been happy with Emilie de Ravin’s performance, but with the amount of focus she’s been given (re: little to none), I wouldn’t be nearly as upset with her dying as I would other characters. That said, I think this episode really added some layers to Belle and had her regain some of her S2 backbone (especially with her grabbing Rumple’s dagger from his coat. It was sneaky and clever).
– Zelena, despite all the evil things she’s done, continues to be a highlight. It’s probably because she’s the only consistent character on the show, but it’s still something to note.
-I’m also looking forward to some development between Zelena and Regina. Would a redemption be a bit annoying? Sure, but I think it’s finally time for Regina to have some blood relatives back in her life.
DISLIKED
-I really couldn’t care for the flashbacks. The most they did was reinforce Belle’s position in the present, but I just rolled my eyes during every one.
– I’m sure that, whenever they need something to happen during a flashback, the writers just go, “Let’s add an ogre! That’ll do.”
– I didn’t care about Gaston. He was annoying, contemptuous, and was about as useless as he was in the past. I particularly laughed when he went on his whole monologue at Gold’s (Pan’s?) shop. Belle’s reaction was priceless.
-Also, does anyone else think that the odd clothing choices have extended to Emma and Regina? From the giant overcoat on Emma (I’m sure it was due to the cold weather, but it looked weird) to Regina’s appear-at-will hat, it looked weird.

CorbinParticipantBut how does Ruby get to the Underworld? I mean, doesn’t some dying have to happen (unless, of course, she’s already been there and that’s where she was when she wasn’t on screen. You know, just chilling)?

CorbinParticipantIf they’re done with locations, then I guess we aren’t getting the final scene spoiled (unless it is a Hook/Emma engagement, which would be unlikely for a final scene). That’s interesting.

CorbinParticipantI was really looking forward to the show’s portrayal of Megara since the actress, Kacey Rohl, is fantastic. Having seen NBC’s Hannibal (which you should check out, just for the acting alone), I was excited for the show to get ahold of a great actress.
Then nothing! All she did was shake and squeal and stick a dagger in a CGI beast. The show turned a headstrong, independent woman into a person just looking for someone to save her (because they will always save her!).

March 8, 2016 at 5:01 pm in reply to: TVLine March 8: Blind Item–Series Killing Off Star In Finale (Revealed) #318486CorbinParticipantIf this is true, and Robin does die, I have no idea as to what their endgame is with Regina.
First, her first love is killed. Then, after believing she has to destroy Snow White, she kills her father. Later on, her first love comes back. She’s forced to kill him. Her mother comes back. She’s tricked to kill her. She finds her soulmate. He ends up having a child with her sister.
Then he dies.
This sends a strong message of misogyny, as the writers seem to have a horrible amount of fun with hurting Regina. What kind of message does that send? I’m not saying that they should tie Regina’s happiness to a man, but what’s the point of putting her through MORE pain and have her regress?
Also, there’s an eerie real-life parallel between Emma and Regina. If Robin dies, he’ll have died in the season he became a regular. The same happened with Neal, who died in Season 3.

March 2, 2016 at 7:18 pm in reply to: TVLine 3/2 – Ask Ausiello – Casting Two Brothers for Season Finale #317860CorbinParticipantIf this show touches The Lion King, my all-time favorite movie, then I would seriously consider not watching. I don’t care if it’s the “ultimate final season of true love and happy endings,” because if the writers are forced to adapt a movie that is filled with talking animals just to fill up some story, then they have clearly lost all hope of creativity.
Now, if they did the Brothers Grimm, that would be interesting. I just hope they tie it somehow/way/form into August.
