Pinocchio used another portal (the wardrobe) and we already know he rescued baby Emma right when she got to our world. Not enough time to make him go to Neverland, do whatever and take another portal to our world.

Or maybe Cora was his true love and after she left him, he remarried and the 2nd wife was the one that died. That way, he can be bitter about Cora and like his wife, although he didn’t deeply love her.
