I don’t think the book was damaged in any way. He retrieved it from Henry’s castle before the place was torn down. And when we saw him the first time with the book, he had to cut the lock for the case that was still protecting the book. The most it had was some dirt on it.
Even when Emma picked it up off the street, wasn’t it dry inside the case?

The diamond mines part ties into Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I don’t think he was forced into working in the diamond mines, it was just his job.
We’ll watch this scene more closely when we do our rewatch(es) tomorrow for Wednesday night’s live podcast.
Actually, we haven’t seen Evil Queen use any magic before the Genie. Not that she hasn’t used it, just that we haven’t seen it.
