ParticipantPerhaps Rumple kept the sword for Emma for the same reason Ruth gave Charming her wedding, ring…the same reason why, when my father died, his wife gave my brother his toolbox and I was given my father’s Bible. These things matter–to no one else, but they matter to us. My brother and I think of them as tokens of our father’s blessing, and I suspect Charming and Emma feel the same way about their momentos.

In SB, Gold picks the lock on August’s room at Granny’s. He enters, looks around, sorts through papers on the desk, finds a drawing of the dagger and scowls.
In FTL, as Rumple visits the housekeeper’s cottage, Bae tries to play with a group of kids, but they run off. Morraine sits with him, explains that the other kids are afraid of Rumple. She says she isn’t afraid: “I don’t think he’s so bad anyway. I saw him on the battlefield when he stopped the fighting. It was like a miracle.” Bae remarks that his father is becoming worse, then briefly mentions the deal. Morraine advises him to seek the ruel ghorm, “the ancient being that rules the night, the original power, ” more powerful than Rumple or anyone. She hurries off ss Rumple approaches. Bae informs Rumple that his friends are afraid of him; Rumple seems confounded by this. But Bae then learns Rumple has killed the housekeeper because she saw the dagger and might have heard the discussion about its ability to kill Rumple. Bae is horrified but Rumple tries to josh about it.
In SB, August visits the Mother Superior–Gold clandestinely watches, then when August leaves, Gold approaches. MS promptly remarks that the rent’s already paid. Gold asks what August came for. MS refuses to violate August’s privacy until Gold threatens to double the rent. She informs him August was seeking advice about reuniting with his long-lost father, the parting with whom had been unpleasant. Gold seems a little taken aback.darcyfarrow

In typical fashion, Gold counters with a question, “Are you proposing I ‘m working with Regina or against her?” Emma suggests, “Diagonally.” Gold ducks that comment and asks what she knows about August, since the latter had been snooping in the pawnshop. Gold claims August’s name is an alias : “If there’s one thing I know about, it’s names.” Emma counters that she trusts August more than she trusts Gold.
In FTL, Rumple and Bae enter their cottage. Rumple sends the housekeeper out, then offers to heal Bae’s wound with magic. Bae blatantly states that Rumple killed the carter; Rumple justifies it with “you were hurt.” Bae rejects the use of magic and chooses a normal means of cleaning the wound. “You’re different now…you hurt people all the time.” Rumple argues that he ended the war and saved the child-soldiers, but Bae will not be deterred, not even when Rumple offers him his heart’s desires. Bae refuses to see the magic as a positive force, nor will he fall to temptation. With pride in his eyes even as he continues to defend the black magic, Rumple says he only wants Bae to be safe and happy–for which he’ll need more power. Bae points out that the reason people are picking on him is his father’s evil powers. Rumple explains that the only way he can be free of the magic is to be killed with the dagger, and even then, the curse would merely be transferred to the killer. What if he could discover another way to break the curse, Bae presses. As the housekeeper enters, seeing the dagger Rumple holds, the conversation halts. When she leaves, Bae succeeds in getting Rumple to agree to a deal: if Bae can find a safe way to break the curse, Rumple will give up the power.darcyfarrow
ParticipantThe Return
August and Henry meet outside the pawnshop to launch their plan: Henry will distract Gold while August sneaks in through the back and searches the workroom. Henry and Gold mirror each other (hands in pockets) as they greet each other. Henry proceeds to purchase a gift for MM. He concldes too quickly, however, and Gold catches August, redirects him when August pretends to be mixed up. Gold watches intently as August leaves (an interesting sidenote: August claims to be a map collector–Jefferson gave Emma much the same claim in the previous episode) .
Later in the pawnshop, Regina comes in for a fight, accusing Gold of breaking their deal to frame MM. In a low voice, Gold answers that he’s only broken one deal in his life. He delivered what he had agreed to: he made “something tragic” happen to Kathryn. Regina had assumed incorrectly that he had planned to kill Kathryn. A foreshadowing line: “Murder seems so much worse here, doesn’t it? ” Gold quips. “You can’t just turn someone into a snail and then step on them.” (Interesting word choice: he says “worse, ” implying a moral aspect, not “more difficult.” Has he gained some ethics since his early days as the Dark One?
During this discussion, he is holding a leather ball, which he eventually places on display.
When Regina tries to argue he cuts her off with the power “please.” She drops that argument immediately but frets that her part in the frame up will be discovered. She claims that Gold, as the creator of the curse, is equally culpable (she says that Gold created the curse for her–we will find out otherwise.) He quips again, “It’s about time you said thank you.” When she wants to know his motives, he refuses to answer.darcyfarrow
ParticipantThat’s been the big problem all along; it was the big problem in Lost too: lack of communication due to lack of trust. MM and Emma are going to break that mold, though: after MM’s jailbreak and Emma’s attempt to run away, they ‘re figuring out that they can solve problems if they stick together.

ParticipantThanks for reminding us of that conversation, Josephine. It’s made me take notice of the word “rules”–I’m wondering if that means the BF could wipe out the Dark One, Cora, and any other magical being she chose to. I ‘ve been thinking for quite some time now that there must be dark magic in order for light magic to exist; maybe the BF has the power to obliterate evil but won’t because she knows that would throw the world out of balance and into chaos.

ParticipantI’ve been imagining Gold taking Rumple to task: “Yes, people feared you; yes, they admired your knowledge and abilities, but they didn’t respect you. You were a cartoon character to them.”
Rumple: “And you have all the animation of a cardboard box. You’re boring, old boy. People went to great lengths to seek me out, but they hide when they see you coming. You think that’s because they fear you but the fact is, you put them to sleep.”
Gold: “It was your emotionality that drove Belle away. If you had approached the situation reasonably, you could have kept her and your power.”
Rumple: “You’re not so wise as you think, old man, if you believe you can have her and magic too. You will have to choose.”
Gold: “After I find Bae.”
Rumple: “After we find Bae. It will take both of us.”
Gold: “Both of us.”

ParticipantTaking a different tack, suppose one of the SB characters could have a chat with his/her FTL counterparts, or vice versa. How might the conversation go?

ParticipantThis one’s been preying on my mind: when was the storybook written?
darcyfarrow
ParticipantRumple wrote the storybook, for it to be exactly what it has been: a device that would eventually lead to the savior’s arrival in SB. He wrote it before the events described in the stories actually happened–the stories are his visions of the future. His personal stories aren’t included because he ‘s not able to see his own future.
