This is a really good question. Surely the Original Power would know about the kiss, and if the BF really is on the side of what’s right, how could she not want to take an easy opportunity to free a wreched soul and eliminate the Dark One from FTL? How could the kiss not be preferable to sending a 14-year-old to a foreign land alone, unprepared and with no way home?

The only explanation I can come up with is that FTL needs a Dark One to counterbalance Regina. The BF would’ve known Rumple would chicken out and not go through the vortex, so with Rumple and Bae separated, there would be no chance of Rumple receiving true love’s kiss.

I hope we’ll get a scene in which Rumple learns about the kiss. It would be very informative to see how he reaacts when he realizes the BF withheld information. If Rumple goes ballistic, we’ll know he would’ve accepted the kiss and allowed it to change him. If he doesn’t, it may be because he is admitting to himself he wouldn’t have allowed the change. If the second scenario is true, that still makes the BF a liar : one who tricked Bae in order to separate him from his father.

If it turns out that the kiss clause wasn’t in effect at the time Bae was still in FTL, it will seem to me like the writers are taking the easy way out of a plot hole.

I like the view from tree limbs, so I’m the sole voter for the convent.

I think Belle needs time to figure out this new world, find her place in it, and learn who Moe and Gold are, since they’re quite different from the men she knew them as (that’s assuming the new magic doesn’t change everyone back to their FTL counterparts) . She could do this under Emma’s wing (I agree that MM and David will probably start living together) . But I think Emma’s going to have her hands full learning to be a mom.

I think it would be best for Belle to have a quiet place where people can take the time to teach her, and a convent fits the bill. Now, I ‘m as much a Rumbelle shipper as anyone can be, but I think it will be better for them in the long run if she has a few months–not apart from him, but as a separate person. When she’s fully up to speed, she can come to him as a full, equal partner, ready to fight beside him, and when necessary, fight him, keep him on the right path.

Will the nuns/fairies try to turn her against Gold? Probably. They won’t succeed : after everything her love has survived, it would take more than fairies to break it. But what could happen is that she changes their minds. When they see the couple together, when Belle describes her former life with Rumple, the fairies may soften their opinions…may even become allies in the search for Bae.

    The Shepherd, con’d
In SB, David comes into Gold’s shop for directions to the troll bridge. Gold’s shop sign reads “Mr. Gold Pawnbroker and Antiquities Dealer.” The building address is 3438.
“Miss Mills led you astray, ” Gold says: apparently, Gold is on Team Mary Margaret &David. Or is he? He gives correct directions but as David turns to leave, something odd happens.
When David first entered the shop, his eye was caught by a hanging mobile –the one James and Snow had hung for baby Emma. David was fascinated–hyponotized, some fans have said. With a small smile, Gold had greeted David with “Charming.” Point 1 for Team MM: Gold seems to be nudging David to remember FTL.

But as David starts to leave, his eye befalls a lawn ornament. David seems hypnotized by this as well. He says it once belonged to him. He now remembers, but it’s the false memory of Kathryn, not FTL. Gold nudges again, “Are you sure?” And smiles when David says he remembers. So is it Team MM or Team Kathryn? Or maybe neither. Maybe it’s just typical Rumple : he gives you the options, you choose.

    The shepherd, cont’d
Rumple approaches the shepherd and his mom with the new deal. Mom reveals to the shepherd that she and dad had dealt with Rumple before: they traded his twin for their farm, and dad always regretted it. They’d never told the remaining twin about it because Rumple had sworn them to secrecy. But now the farm’s on the line again. Plus Rumple sweetens the deal: the shepherd will become a dragonslaying hero.
    Character -revealing details:
    1. The shepherd seems to be the first dealmaker to show any curiosity (or suspicion) about Rumple. What do you get out of this, he wants to know. Rumple ducks the question. (We see the shepherd–now known as James–reaffirm his curiosity about Rumple in the season finale. Is James a potential friend? Besides James, only one other will make an attempt to get to know Rumple: Belle.)
    2. Taking children seems to be emotionally difficult for Rumple: he needs to dull the discomfort with drink.(He does this again with Ella.)
    3. Rumple believes “everyone has a choice, just make sure it’s the right one.” He lays out the deal but doesn’t presume to tell people what’s right or wrong (until we get to the finale, where he pushes James to take a deal.)

    The Shepherd
As King George mourns the death of his adopted son, Rumple arrives to offer a fresh deal: a son in return for information of the whereabouts of a certain fairy. We learn important facts about Rumple:
    1. While he has no trouble homing in on humans, finding them wherever they are, his radar doesn’t work with fairies.
    2. Death trumps magic.
    3. When you deal with Rumple, ask up front for complete information (such as “does the family I’m taking this boy from have other kids?”)
    4. Rumple takes pride in being “a man of (his) word.”
    5. Rumple can be persuaded to take the lesser end of a bargain–but he won’t let you forget his generosity. BTW, when he’s offering you something he considers highly valuable (a child) in return for something lesser (directions to a fairy’s location) you should probably question his true motives.

Bur George doesn’t, and so he accepts the deal: a twin for directions.

The deal Rumple makes with EQ keeps bothering me. He asks for “comfort and a good life” ; it’s so unlike him to be so unspecific. Had it been the other way round–Regina asking him for comfort and a good life–he would’ve driven a Mack truck through that loophole. He could’ve turned her into Paris Hilton’s purse puppy and that would’ve satisfied his obligation and given him a hearty giggle to boot.

So does anyone have an explanation for this uncharacteristic word choice? The only thing I can come up with is that maybe the request didn’t really matter to him ; he just gave an answer that Regina would expect and not question. What Rumple really wanted out of the deal, perhaps, was for her to “get on with it, ” start the curse. That, and the “please” clause. Anyone have another idea?

I think I had one small flicker of brilliance in a sea of guesses: I ‘d predicted that we would learn Gold has the love potion in SB. Oh, and that Jefferson would meet Belle in the mental ward. *sigh* And I was just so sure August would turn out to be Ariel.

I’m with you, Helpmeunderstandthis. I too found the narration problemaic ; I was especially bothered by the “only one can stop her ” statement, since it was pretty clear from the pilot onward that the savior is the catalyst for the final battle, not the sole combatant. It diminshes all the other characters to say only Emma can defeat Regina. Let’s give credit where it’s due : we’ve seen Snow, Charming, Rumple, the fairies and the dwarves in battle and there’s not a wimp in the bunch. It has to be a team effort; we’ve been shown Regina’s no slouch in the warfare department.

I too had some doubts early on whether Regina carried her memories over from FTL. In the first few episodes she gave the impression of being a worried mom who feared for her son ‘s mental health. The ambiguity is part of why Once is so great.

Having just completed a two -year project in co- writing a Lost story, I have a lot of sympathy for tv writers. I had a lot of “if I had only thought of that in season 1!” moments.

The poor girl hasn’t even had a chance to change clothes or get a decent meal, let alone learn where she is and how to navigate the new world. Gold had better have an unbreakable explanation for insisting the magic had to come first (something along the lines of “if I bring back the magic in the next few minutes I can save August “). Belle’s got a lot to learn before she ‘s ready to join this game. Of couse she can do that –and bring her battle planning experience to the table– but how she feels about her participation, and how she feels about Rumple, will depend on how much he invests in her future over the next few days.
