ParticipantThe writers are 21st-century Romantics, with their belief in the moral wisdom of children, the power of nature, the corruption of government and the failure of social institutions. Emma’s experience with the foster system is downright Dickensian. I’m especially struck by the across-the-board corruption of the kings and queens in OUAT.
But I do have hope for the parents after Gold’s apology to faux-Bae. Change is possible and perhaps when Emma starts to believe in her son’s claims, change will come. I wonder if Gold now will become a catalyst in getting the other SB parents to listen to their children.

I think most of us who voted for Gold/Rumpel are probably just HUGE fans of Robert Carlyle’s AMAZING acting. At least that’s the case for me…when he speaks either as Gold or Rumpel, I hang on his every word…he’s hypnotizing at times…such a complex character, so intriguing…so cruel sometimes, yet we feel for his pain…how can we not love such a fascinating character?
Exactly. RC conveys so much in the smallest of gestures–a tilt of his head, a rubbing of his fingers–and then he can go so big he’s a tornado that sweeps you in to his emotions, leaving you unable to breathe.

ParticipantHere’s what Emma says to MM: “I didn’t tell him the truth. His father was no hero and trust me, he does not need to know the real story.”

ParticipantHere’s what Emma tells Henry in “True North”:
“I was pretty young. I had just gotten out of the foster system and the only job I could get was this 24-hour diner off the interstate. Your dad was training to be a fireman. He always got the worst shifts, so he’d come in and order cores and pie and sit at the counter and always complain that we didn’t sell pumpkin pie but he always came back the next day anyway.”
Henry: “Did you get married?”
Emma: “No, nothing like that. We hung out a few times outside of work. And life happened. His got better and mine got worse and I got in some trouble.”
Henry : “When you went to jail.”
Emma: “Yeah. Before I went I found out I was pregnant with you. I tried to contact him and I found out that he died saving a family from a burning apartment building. So when you think about the savior, Henry, he was. Your father was a real hero.”

I really like this episode too it has a couple of my favorite moments when Emma tells Henry about his father even though it was made up. Also my favorite moment of the series when Emma tells Mary Margaret that she’s her mother it was a funny awkward moment. Then after the funny quip about “you do kind of have my chin” and when MM picked up the blanket I was so hoping for some kind of memory flash moment.
I wonder if, when MM remembers, she will ask forgiveness for having sent baby Emma away, now that MM knows what kind of a childhood Emma had. Not that Snow had a choice, but MM is such a caring person I think she’ll feel heartsick that she wasn’t there for baby Emma.

Exactly! And this will need the community’s help, by suggesting content for these episodes and helping collect the relevant links, forum posts or summaries, and other points. We’ll schedule these podcasts so everyone knows what is coming.
There’s a growing list of “Burning Questions”–that might make a good starting point for theme discussions.

I’m anxious to see Mr. Gold reunite with both Belle and Baelfire. That man needs a reason to become good again. He needs living proof of his goodness, and Baelfire and Belle are those people. Hopefully, Mr. Gold will be able to prove himself and become the loving father he once was.
Or maybe he needs to become good again before he reunites with his loved ones, so they will see the change and forgive him. To do something selfless, even self-sacrificing, and aboveboard would be a great first step. If he can find himself again he’ll be ready to find Bae and Belle.

ParticipantThere’s a different tone in August’s voice whenever he talks to Henry. It’s the tone of an adult who doesn’t spend much time around kids, because he’s trying to sound like a pal but he’s coming across as awkward, somewhat condescending. So I agree, it’s not Henry he’s calling (besides, would he risk Regina answering?)

ParticipantThe more I think about your theory, Snowfan, the righter it feels. After Gold ‘s confession to August, I’m convinced that Gold has to mend his relationship with Bae before he can be a worthy husband for Belle. Besides the fact that he’s made the vow to love no one else until he’s found Bae, his heart is too damaged and he’s too burdened with guilt. If he found Belle first, he wouldn’t be the open-hearted, attentive, giving man that Belle deserves.

ParticipantAugust probably hasn’t met Bae. He asks Gold, “Do I even look like him?” My hunch is the little he knows–and it is very little–came from stories he heard or read. If he really did know Bae, he would know useful details that he would have revealed to Gold to win his trust (even something as small as Bae’s mother’s name or the name of Bae’s best childhood friend would have been sufficient.) And I doubt if Bae would encourage anyone to con Rumple and break his heart. Bae’s a straightforward person. Besides, a con was an unnecessary risk. If August had said,” Bae sent me to you, and to prove that, he told me to say that when he was little his favorite toy was a stuffed lamb named Fuzzy”– just by being upright about it and showing he has inside info, August would’ve won Gold over. I think the only reason to try a con job is that August knows nada.
