ParticipantI was just sitting here wallowing and fussing and asking myself, “Why is this ship so danged sad? Why does it feel like this ship has always been so danged sad?”
Then it hit me… for me, this ship HAS always been sad. I joined the fanbase the week between 314 and 315. I have literally never happy-shipped this ship.
Sometimes it just hits me what a heartbreaking story this is. Seriously, if you write it out in story form, it’s closer to Romeo and Juliet than a fairytale. I just need to see those two lost kids get their happy ending. And not have so much sad. It’s supposed to be a FAIRY TALE! Why is it so danged sad!! They give me the sads. 🙁
(This pity party brought to you by DSB, the word ‘sad’ and her case of the sads.)

ParticipantAbsolutely. The writing for Emma has been terrible lately.
Irony is, she felt more like Emma this episode than in a long time. Chasing Regina around the forest and snappy one liners… she’s not the Emma of old but I could at least see the shadows there.

ParticipantYeah. I mean, I agree on one hand. On the other hand (and I cannot believe I am even defending anything CS-related) I feel like that there wasn’t really a discussion needed; he is someone that she loved and lost and Hook knows that. What do you say about it, you know?
But yeah, upon rewatch, the reaction was stronger than I recalled it being. And one heck of an acting job from JMo; there was a LOT said there without dialogue (and I am going to assume it’s her acting choices as that reaction is not script-supported.) Actually, I don’t think it’s going out on a limb to say it might be her best bit of the season thus far.
I don’t know what posesses these writers sometimes. Like, where do you come up with something like that, just randomly pop it in and then ignore it all over again…
I wish I could figure out what they were thinking.

ParticipantOh definitely, Phee, by the end of the scene it was over and they were back into the plot with Snow Queen etc.
It almost hurts more when the show reminds you that it has a heart and it CAN do stuff like this. When I spend the 45 minutes laughing my butt off because Bo Peep is a warlord, it’s easier to let it go and draw the line down the middle: Once from 101-early 3B and Once 3B & beyond. But then they do something like this and just… ugh. It CAN be so good, and yet, most of the time it chooses not to. (Overall IMO it was the strongest episode of the season, and while the bar was set pretty low, it was a far far cry from the nonsense we’ve seen in the even-numbered episodes. Other Roomie said last week it’s like they’re alternating, and I think she’s right.)

ParticipantHere’s the scene for those curious. Full and fair warning, it is definitely a CS scene. You might consider only watching the first 90 seconds, depending on your sensitivity that is reasonably safe. My recollect in my description above to Rainbow was off a bit, the effect is essentially the same though.
(BTW I missed THE glasses in the box the first time around. That explains my confusion.)

ParticipantBTW RG, I’m glad to see I’m not the only one having a serious Moment over this. I just… man. It kicked me right in the feels.

ParticipantIs that what those glasses were? Dang.
So I posted this on tumblr, but the only other time I can recall seeing that box is during Price of Gold. Which was of course, in hindsight, a huge SF ep.
Like 50% of this ep was SQ baiting, so maybe they were just feeling the need to throw the ships a bone? I have no idea.
But the music, oh, the darned theme is now stuck in my head and I just feel like sitting here and BAWLING. I don’t even know why but I just feel like I need to have a good breakdown.
And I totally agree with RG. All we’ve wanted is for someone to FEEL something, to acknowledge it – that moment was the complete antithesis of the callous use of Neal’s death last week with the Rumple/Henry scene. (When you manage to use Bae’s death for emotional manipulation with his father and son but a real genuine moment in a CS scene… something has gone completely cukoo back at the farm.)
BTW did anyone notice the filebox in the episode that had the giant “A&E” on the side? That wasn’t the same filebox she pulled the things out of, was it?

ParticipantThere’s no reaction to retcon. They’ve retconned plenty, but it was just a moment – like a little, genuine moment – that consisted literally of taking a photo from a box, a zoom on the photo, a shot of Emma’s reaction (genuine sadness/feeling of loss/totally appropriate where Emma *should* be if she’d been shown to give a da*n in the last dozen episodes) and a shot of Hook’s reaction (also genuine) to that. No dialogue but… it was a reminder of how danged good JMo can be, given something to work with.
(Incidentally, that might have been the first CS scene that I didn’t completely hate. I’m not sure how I feel about that. Progress, I suppose.)
Also, I really miss my ship.
I kinda really need the ranch to work right now, pout pout stomp foot!!

ParticipantNo Rainbow, it was the first GENUINE moment that they’ve had since his death.
Between that and the music…
Is the ranch malfunctioning for anyone else?
