ParticipantNo, I get you Onyx. I am now at the same point. But remember the game I play before the episodes, what is the WORST case scenario and then what you get is not as horrible. And that was fabulous, when we were trying to tread water to get from 315 to 322. But at 322, the initial “it’s not as bad” was replaced in short order by, “Not as bad doesn’t mean bad,” and, it’s over.
I promise you can’t be more sensitive drama queen than me. I had to be a grown-up for an hour today; I fought back tears on the way there and cried on the way home, and other than that, I have been fanning (or rather the activity formerly known as fanning. Grieving would be the most apt term at the moment.)
Ann, if you’ve gotten through the flashback I would truly and honestly stop there. It only gets worse from there on out; well, there is the scene with Marian in the jail that follows directly thereafter which is SF (because, all of who Emma is must be based in SF, don’t ya know,) but nothing after that will serve to do anything but hurt.

ParticipantYes, RG. That is where, at the end of the day, I keep coming back to it being effing ridiculous. They set up the story in a manner that was expressly intended to bring him back. And then they… didn’t. What?!
If he needed to be dead, leave him dead. That was the case with Graham, you know? Bury him, leave it alone. Don’t kill him, then bury him. Two episodes later, tease that you can bring him back with a time travel spell. Two episodes later, enact time travel spell. Then spend two episodes time traveling, EXPLAIN that he needs to be brought back, and then say “Don’t do it!”
I mean, is it a retcon of SF? She says she loved him, but did she really? And how do you do that to your child, your little boy who now has to face his coming of age years without his Dad? I don’t even know how to take that scene, I can’t even figure in my mind how to interpret it. It was absolute, complete, total idle cruelty.
They killed a man for their ship, and then toyed with the emotions of their fans before… leaving him dead. Seriously. If that’s not the definition of twisting the knife, I don’t know what is. (Oh yeah. Having him appear and reminding us how amazing and wonderful he was… but that we can’t have him back.)

ParticipantRG – Because Emma has turned into podEmma, an OOC idiot.
Onyx, it’s funny, right after the episode last night I was pretty at peace. I was ready to put the SF scene in the win column; frankly we expected DO322 and a CS TLK so a DO322 with a SF scene and a CS regular ol’ kiss isn’t so bad, hey? But while I do still put the SF scene in the win column, it somehow makes it more hurtful overall… I love and adore it and am glad to tuck it into the Tallahassee mythology, but it seems extra cruel to remind us of that which we’ll never have again. I would have LOVED it as a bonus DVD feature, you know, but no – tucked right into that episode, “Here’s what you had, aren’t they darling – do you see how he respects, teaches and guides her? Well, she wants him to stay dead, and here’s the pirate who stole his mom, they’re gonna go make out now. Thanks for watching!”
FFS, for a show that I think really thinks it’s doing the right thing by its fans, it sure screws it up royally. It’s almost getting worse as the day goes on; every time I come to the thread and there are new new posts I just keep being reminded… there won’t be. What we say now are final rehashes of what we’ve said; all that there is to say of the story has been said and all that there will be to digest has been given to us. Despite resigning myself to DO322 in the last days, it still hurts unbelievably much. As always, it goes back to that conversation between Emma and Mary Margaret about false hope being the worst of all. And the show DID give it to us – Zelena promising Bae still existed somewhere in time, that it wasn’t idle cruelty, as the show turned back the clock. Ah, but it WAS idle cruelty, at least to the small posse of us who cared, because they had the way – a million ways – to bring him back and very intentionally refused to. He is dead because they wanted him dead, Emma wanted him to stay dead, and Rumple inexplicably decided to listen. It’s such a betrayal to the core mythology of Once, but it is what it is, and we clearly have a new show now. Nothing to be done about it, you know? *shrugs*

ParticipantI think that’s totally valid, RG. S4 is likely it, unless they can get a 13-ep order for S5 in order to wrap up loose ends and hit 100 episodes, which is kind of where I envision something like this falling into place. Like I said, it was just a passing thought, not something I expect is in the works now, but perhaps might pop up again in the future.
4A will be Frozen, apparently, and I sincerely hope A&E know that they better be writing 4B toward a coherent finale.

ParticipantI’d be game for helping with a 3B rewrite, as well. I have a fic premise, but I’m not in love with how it’s turning out so I’d be happy to do something else instead.
Something tells me spending the summer trying to fix this in fanfic for my sad, tired brain is not going to give me the space I need to get over it. 🙁

ParticipantRG, I do agree, and I have no question that “Neal” is forever gone from our screens. I am wondering though if as the show wanders farther and farther away from its initial premise, if they might have to take a hard look at what went wrong and we might end up with some sort of weird adventure to find “Baelfire,” who bears no resemblance to “Neal Cassidy,” at some point down the road. I’m not sure I want it and I definitely don’t think I’d ship it, it was more just a passing pondering.
Unfortunately for Once, I think they will find too late that when you yank the heart out of something, the limbs that provided visible movement might keep waving for a while, but without that central support, it will collapse upon itself. It was so astonishingly clear upon our watchback that this show oriented itself around this story, often in subtle, quiet ways, but now there is no purpose for several of the characters nor the overarching theme of the show. Rumple will have a back-and-forth with Belle, until they sort this dagger nonsense out, and then? His reason for being is gone. When they ask themselves, “Where did it all go wrong,” I think the answer will be blindingly clear, especially since I think A&E already know. Watching that, in my heart of hearts, I saw the story we should have had and watched them try to tell it through the story they had to tell… realizing that’s what’s been going on the last few eps. They tried to hang onto that heartstory as best they could while putting the focus elsewhere, but they can’t do that forever. Whatever went down, I think Once3B is an indicator of what is to come and at some point, there may be a strange, last-ditch effort to save the show. It won’t succeed; the show won’t make it long with the storytelling we’ve just been witness to, and that makes me sadder than anything. When you sell out to fanservice at the expense of the story, and damage it beyond repair, you can’t go back to the story and expect it to work – but that doesn’t mean they won’t try.

ParticipantI do almost wonder, Keb, if they are going to loophole it around to somehow bring back Baelfire… a version who has no knowledge or recollection of any time ever spent with Emma. How Henry would still exist, I haven’t a clue, but given the lack of sense and logic on this show, it wouldn’t surprise me. Some sort of re-cast, 30-something Baelfire, who somehow has to be convinced that in some alternate life he was a car thief who has a teenage kid.
It seems to stick out like a sore thumb that they ignored that one key piece of BTTF, and that would give Bae back to Rumple without messing with CS.
Also, RG, yeah. Yet another OOC necessary to make this dumb half-season plot work.

ParticipantReally glad to hear the critics speaking out against things this episode, and half-season.
Just logged onto Facebook to find that Other Roomie posted about the show last night – in short, how wrong it was. I’ve actually taken care to cloud her viewpoint very little, and although she has been told on multiple occasions Neal was dead-dead, I know she was waiting for him to return last night. Let’s face it: they killed one of their core characters, set up the expectation that time travel could resurrect him, enacted the time travel episode, reminded us that he is the heroine’s definition of home, and gave the character with the means & motivation to save him the information necessary. And then… no. Talk about whiplash for GA, who had no spoiler of doom, and no forewarning that this one, singular time, dead really meant dead and there would be no magical plot exception. Even WITH that knowledge, Other Roomie was clearly devastated last night – really, as far as someone who doesn’t ship goes, very devastated.
It’s horrible storytelling, really. How do you kill a character, tease a return, have the means to easily and logically execute said return and then not deliver?
Coming at it from that angle, it feels exceptionally cruel.

ParticipantWell, that was probably the original plan. The one the dog ate in the early teens of the season. Then nobody could remember who was Han Solo and who was Luke so they just started plopping people places in the story.

ParticipantWell our ship may not be, but at least our thread is full of win. Happy 1400 seems wrong, so perhaps we’ll go with, bittersweet 1400, all.
Don’t worry. Henry will be revealed as actually the child of The Little Old Woman Who Lived In A Shoe & Prince Nobody by 4×03. Emma has no kids, she was just so bored in jail she made up her own headcanon :/
