ParticipantAgreed (and I have my own emotional ties to NYC, so I get that,) but it’s already established as important to several plot points in the show. She could have popped out in Boston, DC, wherever… it was just a side thought, anyways. (And maybe she did, the text merely said “Our World,” but it looked like NYC to me.)

ParticipantI don’t ship Rumbelle either (I don’t anti-ship them, they’re just not my thing,) but it’s my understanding that their TLK can only break his curse in the EF. So, since they’ve never really been together in the EF since Regina entrapped her 33-ish years ago, there hasn’t been an opportunity for that.

Those are all interesting points, and through SF goggles it all makes sense. At the moment though, my SF goggles have a cynical filter on them, so I’m more inclined to file things under, “they’re out of original ideas and are subconsciously rehashing stuff” as opposed to, “they’re deliberately writing in parallels”. I would love to be proven wrong, I just can’t bring myself to have that kinda hope. *sigh*
A couple of things lead me away from the googles theory, though. First, using subconscious rehashes is definitely a thing I can subscribe to, but it was a bunch of specific, random things in one episode. We also had the same thing back during the Lily episode with Tallahassee, but it’s not something we typically see on an episode-to-episode basis. It wasn’t a bunch of S2 stuff in one given episode or whatever, it was a bunch of stuff from one specific episode in another specific episode, and that’s odd to me.
Secondly, I don’t think it actually has a lot to do with SF. I mean, if they were paralleling Manhattan and Smash the Mirror for some reason, it doesn’t strike me as necessarily a SF-related reason. Yeah, Manhattan was obviously a big deal episode for SF, but this one really wasn’t. I can go SF goggles for things like the was-she-or-wasn’t-she pendant clutch of last week (the necklace? Just messing with her out-of-control magic hands? something else entirely?) but library searches have nothing to do with SF. I’d almost be more inclined to go, “Manhattan was about Rumple finding Bae no matter what, this episode was about powering his hat so maybe the hat thing IS about bringing Bae back?” And yeah, granted, to me a Bae return = SF but it doesn’t necessarily have to.
It’s just a long list of similarities between two episodes, some of them concrete (scarf) and some just random (library, prophecy, necklace tug) but it was a few too many for me to go, “Nah, it’s nothing.” If it had JUST been Anna tugging off the necklace, would’ve gone, “Huh, that’s how Emma pulled her necklace off. Weird. Maybe costume department makes them with breakaway clasps for dramatic effect…” But combined with half a dozen other things, I’m inclined to think there was “something” to it.
Is it just that Ingrid’s 1982 story is based in NYC? Maybe! (Though that begs its own question of why NYC, but that’s neither here nor there.) It may be something not related to SF, not related to either half even, but it was a LOT of “coincidences” to truly be a coincidence.

ParticipantI think he’d come back open to having a relationship, then find out what Rumple has done and be utterly appalled. It would be a tough road back from that, because how would he ever trust change from his father again? If he could change, then revert this badly, how is any change ever to be permanent?

ParticipantHey, RG… you know I love you to death, right? Skip this post, it’s going to make you tear your hair out as I make optimistic-style observations of 4×08-09 :p

Can we talk about Smash the Mirror and Manhattan?
There was an awful lot of Manhattan in this most recent episode. I don’t know what to do with it, but I feel like it should be catalogued.
One of my favorite people, Slurpeez, has talked a bit about how the scarf Elsa used to find Emma is the same scarf that Emma wore in Manhattan.
But it’s more than just that. The scene where Anna tore off the necklace had major Manhattan vibes for me. Do you know what happens if you take a necklace, grab it where the pendant is and tug? It freaking hurts your neck, that’s what. It does not take the necklace off! It’s always seemed odd that Emma took her necklace off that way in Manhattan, and the fact that it was odd there only accentuated the fact that it was odd that Anna tugged her necklace off the exact.same.way. Then, Anna tossed it in the fire (Emma gave hers to Neal… aka BaelFIRE.) And when Kristoff barged in, it reminded me a ton of when Neal burst into his apartment to rescue Emma from his father.
And I thought I was maybe just being a little cray-cray and finding parallels where they didn’t exist until Ingrid stepped through the door and out into… Manhattan.
So I went back and skimmed the transcripts for both episodes and a couple of other things jumped out at me.
1) The library. In Manhattan, Cora, Regina and Hook are searching for the location of Rumplestiltskin’s dagger in the library. In Smash the Mirror, Will and Robin are searching for a book in the library. And wasn’t the map that they eventually found folded like the page from the book? I haven’t watched that part of Manhattan in a while but I seem to remember something similar.
2) Removing memories to procure a fresh start. Ingrid does it to Elsa-in-the-urn and apparently foster-teen-Emma, and Rumple offers to do it when he wants to make Neal/Bae “fourteen again.”
3) The prophecies. The Seer’s prophecy, “You will be reunited with your son,” but it will take a long time, seemed very much a parallel to “You will find this third sister, and be reunited with the one you just lost.”
Anyways, not sure what to make of it all, but as iconic as Manhattan was for Once (IMO) it seems a lot of strings to draw out to just be coincidental. Anyone else?
Also, just for the record: “Happy endings can take a long time, but they do happen.” #swanfire what? 🙂

Some random thoughts not included in that post:
1) Pg 23 makes me think of the “23” we see prominently in the bar in Manhattan. I know those likely originate from Lost numbers, but I’m not completely sold the same number wasn’t chosen intentionally as an additional Manhattan link.
2) The crazy power-source flickering lights in the house hearkened back to not only Emma’s arrival in Storybrooke (sparks on the powerline) but the births of Henry and 2.0. I know the verdict is still out on all of that, but given that I believe both to be magical TL babies, it’s interesting.
3) When Elsa gave Anna back her necklace, Roomie looked at me and said, “Well, there’s your parallel…” Which is interesting, because it’s not something we’ve discussed extensively.
4) They had Will with the tumblers again. Not sure what to do with that, maybe just putting it here more for my own future reference.
5) Emma was willing to lose her magic for the sake of her son. Maybe stretched parallel to Rumple going w/o magic to NYC – Manhattan again? Yeah, stretched.
6) When Regina healed Henry’s cut, I was reminded of Rumple trying to heal Bae’s scraped knee.
7) The fairytale Ingrid had Anna recount: the king, devastated by the loss of his child, decided the kingdom should share in his pain. Is that what they’re trying to do with Rumple?
8) Elsa’s declaration of “This is who you are” had her with the red Manhattan scarf prominently in her hand. It made me go hmmm, SF thing? LOL.
9) One more time, as I am adopting this as the motto that I choose to view Once and the SF story by: “Happy endings can take a long time, but they do happen.” Patience… it’s a thing I’m working on.

ParticipantSo we finally finished The Terrible and uh… in addition to the red scarf, the Ingrid/Anna/Kristoff scene had major Manhattan vibes for me. The manner in which Anna tugged off the necklace (and then tossed it in the fire) and then the way in which Kristoff barged in in her defense…
Oh, and look where the SQ landed… MANHATTAN. (I’d already started this post when that happened and it was that moment where I went “Oh, maybe it’s NOT just my crazy.”)
On the plus side? During the CS makeout session, Other Roomie let out an audible, “Oh, yuck.” She ships SF but definitely sits on the line where she’s “aww’d” at a few CS scenes. So if she’s saying yuck…
All in all, I didn’t think those episodes were terrible. In fact, I think I liked them better than most in… well, quite a while. *shrug*
ETA: ALSO… happy endings require patience. I am cool with that, sounds like my motto as of late…

ParticipantWe watched 408, we’ll do 409 tomorrow. So the Sorcerer wrote the book? But no one knows who the sorcerer is? My bet, the blue fairy, to satisfy all those who vote sneaky fairy. And it kinda makes sense, as Henry (who totally had magic, btw, if I didn’t already believe that because he’s a TL baby, I sure would after that scene w Regina) is the new Apprentice… and wasn’t Henry’s existence the point of 300 years of manipulating the master manipulator?
I never put too much stock in sneaky fairy theories, but since the writers are letting the fans write the show, it seems a likely possibility to me :p
