Especially when A and E went to MRJ specifically to play this part. They’ve only done that with two others: Bobby (and they never in a million years expected Bobby Carlyle to actually take the part) and Ginny.
I did not know that! I have been trying not to believe that this was CS pandering but geez! A&E created Neal, specifically wanted MRJ. Why do this? a million different ways they could have advanced the story line without killing him so why? Why? I’m losing hope. ……..
There was a fake casting call for “Jack” to throw people off, but they brought MRJ into the office, sat him down next to a poster of Bobby as Rumple, pointed to it, and said, “that’s your father.” A and E had been big fans of him from True Blood and Terriers. He was their choice.
I never watched terriers but I loved him on true blood. I was so excited when I saw him in the season 2 premiere. He’s a great actor. Better really than what they have written for him on the show. Such a waste of an actor and a character.

emmaswanParticipantAnd indeed I love him very much. I think from Neal pov he would want his family to have happiness and not waste away. So yes they will get a bitter sweet happy ending and they will continue to live their lives. So I do wish his family to find happiness in life but give honor and respect to memory of Nealfire. But seeing how things are going I doubt that will occur.
it does seem as he is already forgotten. Again. He got the shaft. Such a horrible ending for such a wonderful thought out character. My hope that they will bring him back has faltered this last 24 hours. I do want him to come back. PLOT or no plot. Nealfire makes this show better. I lost him and my favorite TV show. Because I can’t watch without him.
emmaswanParticipantNot to continue the debate but wanted to put this out there. I’m on the west coast and just read all this when I woke up. As another poster said maybe all we can really expect out of life is a bittersweet ending. And bittersweet it will be for many of our beloved characters now that Neal is gone. Anyone who has ever lost a loved one knows the void that will be felt FOREVER.
That doesn’t mean that life won’t continue (indeed it must) or that the characters won’t ever be happy again. And they do deserve to be happy. BUT SO DID NEAL. I could argue he deserved it more than most but that’s a separate issue. Regardless of how one feels about Neal, regardless of ship, we all watch the same show. And I think we all want good writing and story lines that feature and display our favorites.
Neal/MRJ got the shaft! I’ve never seen a character treated so dismissively by a writing team. The episodes leading up to his death and the episode itself was awful! It was poorly done. It is even more grievously felt because Neal was their creation. Their own fairy tale. They created him, Emma and Henry. And this was their master plan? This was how they wanted to end Baelfire’s life! I can believe it! Very hard pill to swallow.
Just to address the whole Neal represented the “real world” fairy tale in this whole show and people die in real life argument I keep seeing. I 100% disagree. He was a born in the EF. Spent how many years in never land? He’s at least 200 years old. Father the dark one. Grandfather Peter Pan. His TL is the TL daughter of Snow and Charming etc etc. He was not the real world version. If anything he was the EPITOME of a fantasy character. So why cant we expect a fairy tale ending for him?
And again created by A&E and this is how they treat their character? It’s offensive to those who loved his character. And we were meant to love him. A&E wanted us to love him. They wanted us to love him and Emma together even if they weren’t going to end up together. They wanted us to be invested in his character. Every episode, every interview they have done up until they killed him tells us they wanted us to love him.
Rant over.
emmaswanParticipantThis story is still about hope. Emma and Neal’s story took place in the real world, therefore their “fairytale” would be based in reality and in real life, it’s not all happily ever afters. Fairytales themselves are an exploration of real life issues through stories.
Friendly jumping into the conversation above if you don’t mind. Sure if one can cherry pick and place those who have done some twisted and evil things on a path to a redemption pedestal like some sort of hallo. As opposed to those who were to adamant about placing others before their own happiness had a pretty sub par arc the entire run of the series. Their reward is death. It’s a wonderful message of hope that perfectly reflects our real world. Meanwhile, disregard the outlandishness featuring magical fix it plot devices created out of thin air , tasers that defy science, dark voo doo magic used to bring back the dead, de-aging characters at will, and flying primates who were once humans. The power of the pen is a mighty tool indeed. Neal’s death didn’t represent a shred of our reality. He was manipulated into using dark magic because the writers wanted his character written off for whatever reason. The end. Their is no logic imo in using the real world angle to justify that writing when the show itself never bothered by following our rules. His sudden need to use dark magic was laughably contrived. It would have been better had he just decided to head back to NYC to pack up his stuff and getting shot from a robbery gone awry. A wrong place at the wrong time situation. It happens everyday. If the writing wanted his abrupt death to represent what happens in our world, that sometimes the good guy who may have deserved their elusive happy ending just never gets that chance. That **** just happens to those who get caught in the crossfire they would have written an ending for Neal that honored and better reflected the unique dynamic he had with Emma in their modern fairytale story. His ending did no such thing. And I get and respect that you may think differently. But I don’t belive this is the appropriate thread to be attempting to explain away a death that many of its posters will never find any logic in its mediocre writing.
AGREE!!!
emmaswanParticipantYou could be right RG. It could be the business side of TV but that doesn’t explain why none of his cast mates have acknowledged him leaving. Surely ABC wouldn’t stop them from doing that. There would be no reason to ask that of them.
Heather thinks it’s a sign of support for MJR if it was ABC, a censure against ABC I guess. I don’t know, though. I’m conflicted over all of it. I suppose they could have called or said goodbye on set and not done it publicly on Twitter. They may not understand how the fans would see that.
If it was a sort of censure against them in support of MRJ would they still be promoting episodes?. the only people who have said anything “officially” is MRJ himself and A&E via twitter or interview. Idk, it’s just too fishy for me. I can understand your lack of hope. I’ve also struggled but it just doesn’t add up for me yet. I have to at least wait for finale.
emmaswanParticipantI think I remember someone spoiling that one death will be a fake and will be reversed and the other death will be permanent.
Also I remember alot of AandE replying to #hope for swanfire and that there can be hope.
Also I remember the poster believe in second chances I doubt thesecond chance is at death. Also. No matter what the actors want, no good, self respecting story can EVER kill a charachter with a name like Baelfire.Rumple was the reversed death. Neal’s is the permanent death. Adam replied #hope to every single tweet–including someone who asked about Pinocchio and Emma as a couple (AFTER August was de-aged). He has since stopped tweeting #hope because he began to realize how fans were taking it (hope for your ship)
I’m blindly hopeful and will remain so until I hear MRJ say he’s in fact not coming back;
Yeah, that’s struck me as odd, perhaps even moreso than the rest of the cast not tweeting him goodbyes. He didn’t even live tweet that ep, which you’d think he’d do if it was his last one. He didn’t tweet a goodbye to the cast and crew, and/or a thank you to the fans immediately after the ep. When he did tweet, he said he was “breaking radio silence”, which, why was he even set to radio silence to begin with? And his tweets dispelled some rumours, said he wasn’t fired and didn’t quit, said he’s thankful for all the friends he’s made on the show, said he’ll always be a Oncer. The closest he came to saying he’s legit left the show was when he said he’d let us all know what’s next when he decides what that is, but it’s not like actors on TV shows don’t look for other projects to work on during hiatuses, so he very well could have just worded it carefully. He never actually blatantly admitted having 100% left the show. It’s…odd.
I admit there is something very fishy and off about the way it all went down out in social media land. I don’t know if ABC stuck their noses in, if MRJ asked to be let out of his contract because he was unhappy with his story or with how he was treated on Twitter, if A and E decided to do a 180 on the story, no idea. There is something strange but I think it has to do with the business side of TV–not the story. I’m glad so many people have hope. I just can’t be one of them.

emmaswanParticipantOmg you guys. You are giving me the hope I had originally while watching 315, before all people here yelled at me that HE DID DIE OK HES DEAD I kept putting the word died in quotes. And rg and everyone kept yelling at me that HES IS REALLY DEAD HE DIDNT JUST “DIE” he really died etc. so I started believing you guys that a&e are really not as g re eat storytellers as I first thought and that tv shows are just pretty people who entertain well etc. well Now I am back to myself. Neal isn’t deas. He is just as dead as Rumpel was. Which, ok was really dead, but reversible
Lol I love your excitement! #keephopealive

Yes, everything he and Adam tweeted that day was worded very carefully. And even with the A&E interviews that followed later never said Baelfire was dead. These guys live for “technicalities”.
