Yes, yes, and yes to all of the above! I too have been trying to understand some of where of those with opposing viewpoints are coming from, but it just gets out of hand so quickly. I’m guessing there are a couple of rational arguments in there somewhere (I admit I do have to cringe at the scene in Rumpel’s old cell in “Queen of Hearts”), but amidst all of the hypocrisy and hyperbole I can’t seem to find any.
And it’s true that one of the worst things about the rape-culture accusations is that that IS a real problem, and this kind of thing just makes light of it. Ugh.
[adrotate group="5"]Epona_610ParticipantSo…I just had to pop in and point out another instance of blatant hypocrisy among the Hook haters (in addition to the whole misogyny thing)–it hit me because I keep seeing cutesy references (mostly on Tumblr) to the whole tumblers (haha) lock-picking flashback with Neal. That’s nice and all, but how is it super cute for Neal to teach Emma (who was still a minor when they met) all kinds of criminal behavior while it’s positively outrageous for Hook to teach Henry about loaded dice? Honestly I didn’t particularly like that scene either, but cheating at dice isn’t much compared to grand larceny, trespassing, and breaking and entering. Just saying.
(And for the record, I don’t hate Neal. I do strongly dislike blatant hypocrisy and poorly-thought-out rants.)
Epona_610Participant@surayya: I agree–that part, that he didn’t mention having given up the Jolly Roger to get back to her until she asked directly and he had no choice–that was one of the biggest points against the whole “jerk-who-can’t-take-no-for-an-answer” argument as far as I’m concerned. I mean, how many times could he have thrown that in her face if he’d wanted to? Adorable!
I do wonder though if he/they might try to get the ship back at some point next season. I kinda want that to happen, because come on–how can they have Captain Hook without the Jolly Roger? However, that might sort of negate the enormity of his sacrifice. I guess a lot would also depend on the circumstances of the trade and who has it now though. And while I’m not holding my breath, I’d love to get more information about that whole thing next season, for that reason and because I’m hoping there’s more to the ditching-his-crew thing. That doesn’t exactly seem like a great thing to do! I suppose my personal headcanon right now is that he told them what he was going to do and they thought he was crazy so they asked to be dropped off. But anyway, they still do have those JR sets around, right? I just think it’d be a waste not to use them again… 😉
Epona_610ParticipantOh, I love that essay, obisgirl! It says a lot of what I’ve been thinking when I wander into various other threads/comments (on this site and others). Because yeah, I’m rather sick of the misogynist claim (I’m sorry, but if Emma didn’t want him around we’ve seen that she’s fully capable of getting that message across instead of say, entrusting him with her son) and then the hypocrisy of following that particular argument with saying how awful it was that Hook “stole” Milah when she obviously wanted to go with him.
I’m sorry, but what’s misogynistic and anti-feminist about that whole thing is forcing a woman to remain in a loveless, unhappy marriage. Was it right for her to abandon her son? No, of course not–she regretted it immensely, but it wouldn’t exactly have been nice for Baelfire to grow up in a toxic environment where his mother deeply resented his father either and probably drank herself silly every night in an effort to forget that. And she even tried to make a last-ditch effort before leaving when she asked the night before if they could just move to some other village where her husband wouldn’t be known as the village coward. But Rumpel was unwilling to make even that small sacrifice, so she left. And just as it says in that essay, Rumpel was quite obviously the villain in that particular situation. He murdered his wife because she had the audacity to think for herself and live the life she wanted.
Hmm…that rant was a bit longer than I intended, sorry about that! But I think I might be able to enjoy the finale more having gotten it out. 🙂 Less than an hour to go!
Epona_610ParticipantHi, everyone! I finally decided I had to come out of lurkdom to join this thread. I’m not usually much of a shipper, but I can’t deny that with this show I’ve been rooting for CS for a LONG time.
Also, I’m a little sick of the negativity in the general fandom; I feel like if I keep hearing/seeing more of it, it’ll put a damper on what should be a great two hours. (Of course, as a pessimist by nature, I still have a tiny seed of doubt about how this will go–but with every interview that comes out, the doubt shrinks! Haha.)
I don’t know if I’m going to be able to watch the finale live since it’s Mother’s Day (and while my mom watches the show, she’s not caught up on current episodes. They’re all sitting on the DVR.) so I don’t want to either go hide in my room or hijack the living-room TV…but if I am able, I’ll probably try to join a chat somewhere. Hopefully I’m going to want someone to celebrate with!
