I have a theory on who the stranger might be. You said his licance plate read Kansas, he had an old fasioned bulky typewritter and he is very mysterious; perhaps he is The Wizard of Oz. The Wizard was a stranger who wound up staying in Oz, this stranger has wound up staying in Storybrooke.
Like Jenny says we do see flying monkeys in the book.[adrotate group="5"]
