It’s interesting that all the characters who got shafted were ‘good’ characters. The same is true with the characters who got assasinated – with the exception of Rumple. I get the impression that OUAT is rather hopeless at making its non-villains interesting, complex, likeable characters.
As for actor contribution, I think they’ve made so many poor decisions that they’ve given up accepting feedback because it would be impossible for them to incorporate most of it.

It makes me wonder if the actors HAVE tried to suggest something, or complained, and were shot down.
I don’t think this is entirely true. Didn’t Lana say back in S2 that she fought with the writers about Regina and Henry’s relationship? I got the impression that her efforts succeeded and got them to portray it differently.
sciencevsmagicParticipantHook may have had good intentions in this episode, but that seems like a weak explanation for why he ‘deserved’ to come back. There’s no way Hook was the first person ever to intend to kill Hades. He just happened to benefit from these massive slices of luck:
1) Hades being out of the UW, so it was possible to sneak into his throne room.
2) Having Arthur with him to find the pages in the throne.
3) Zelena killing Hades at the same time that Hook wanted to.
But it all just comes back to the fact that any slight good that Hook does is given a disproportionately large weight, whereas his misdeeds are given a ridiculously low weight.

I’d be very surprised if at least three of the regulars (RC, GG, JMo) do not have a strained relationship with A&E by this point.
sciencevsmagicParticipantAnd how is this Crystal going to help him? What does it do outside of kill people?
It “obliterates” them – destroys their soul forever I think. Basically it’s a fate worse than death. Even if that’s all it does, I would imagine that’s a pretty useful weapon to wield in the OUAT world, where death is reversible. The Charmings would know that if they crossed Rumple they couldn’t fix things by charging down to the UW to bring back one of their own.
sciencevsmagicParticipantLet’s all be civil about this but….did Hook deserve to come back to life (by way of a god-blessing from Zeus)?
If you mean from a moral perspective then…I think not. I agree with WickedRegal and yourself.
But another interesting question is: do you believe Hook deserves to return based on what he adds to the story? Is he an interesting character? Does he contribute to the plot? Are his dynamics with the other characters important to the show?
For me, the answer to all three of the above questions is ‘no’. I find him rather bland, and his character doesn’t have much depth or complexity anymore. His sole reason for existence is Emma. He doesn’t drive the plot forward – not through is own actions anyway. As Screwball Ninja points out, Hook’s narrative function is that of a henchman. He is simply a supporting actor – these days, to Emma and the Charmings. Finally, he doesn’t have much of a relationship with anyone except Emma. Their relationship’s been front and centre this season, but it doesn’t integrate into the rest of the story all that well. It’s not like Emma and Regina, or Emma and Henry which really form the core of the entire show.
Anyone else have any thoughts about this?
sciencevsmagicParticipantI felt cheated by his death. We spent all of 5A running around with Arthur, hating Arthur, wanting Merida to punch Arthur right in his smug face. After all of that, there no moment of satisfaction. His demise was lightning quick, came at another villain’s hands, and he actually seemed content down in the underworld. A lot of set up, no payoff. So pointless.
May 9, 2016 at 5:35 am in reply to: FAVORITE AND LEAST FAVORITE MOMENTS from this episode 5 x 21 LAST RITES #323085sciencevsmagicParticipantI hated this episode. It was a nonsensical, distasteful mess. One of the very few moments that had any meaning was Robin’s funeral. There was such a HUGE contrast between Regina’s dignified grief and Emma’s crying and carrying on. One actually had emotional depth, the other was so hollow that I felt like administering a slap. In fact, I want Regina to administer the slap to Emma in the next episode, because it’s her fault that Robin’s dead. I’m peeved enough that I want the ratings to drop because of this episode.
sciencevsmagicParticipant@PriceofMagic – I enjoyed all of that!
Belle: Okay. Rumple and I will go and enjoy some happy time together before we’re required to be back onscreen and fighting again. Seriously, there’s no reason for him to do half the stuff he’s made to do other than it makes him look like a bad guy in comparison to Hook. Emma: Hey, don’t go hating on Hook! Belle: Emma, you didn’t even like him until Neal was dead. You didn’t even choose him. You ended up with him because your choice was taken away. Emma: Yeah well….Shut up! Regina: Belle does have a point. Hook didn’t even get a redemption arc. He was suddenly considered a good guy just because he wanted to get in your pants. My redemption arc took me longer than two seconds.
If you want a conversation along these lines, except in verse…

sciencevsmagicParticipantDo you think Emma is still a “hero” worth rooting for?
No. She’s either an empty shell or this co-dependent, obsessive person who goes to extremes to bend life to her will when things aren’t to her liking. She doesn’t mind if people get hurt during her schemes either. If Emma had been given a cursed personality, I imagine it’d be a lot like she is now. Oh, and her cursed name should be ‘Bella’.
