[Summary of the Orpheus and Eurydice legend.]

That sounds a lot like the situation with Hook and Emma right now.

I think there’s something sad about treasured objects that become so valued for sentimental reasons that they have to stay safely on the shelf where they can never again be useful. Favourite characters can become like that, just static things, frozen images. We might encase them in gold, but they’re still nothing more than statues if they don’t have something to do on-screen. I’d rather see a favourite character end well, like the Huntsman, than drift along.

They should film a death scene now for every character. The leaks would have a hard time coping with that, and it would give the actors….motivation.

Yes it would be nice if all of the core cast survived and got their happy ending, but that very well might not be the case on the show itself.

Yeah, “happy ending” has that second word, after all.

My gut feeling is that it won’t be someone whose death has already been foreshadowed and then averted, since it wouldn’t have the same dramatic punch the second or third time around. Can’t be Belle, either, because, as someone said way back in this thread, that would send Rumpel into an angsty, destructive rage, and that would be another plot re-tread with diminishing impact.

I can totally imagine Hook going out in a “It is a far, far better thing I do…” (A Tale of Two Cities) kind of way. Big, romantic gestures are part of his character. Maybe they’ll even do that Dickens tale, only set in revolution-torn Oz instead of Paris.

clearly A/E are not killing some popular character off in order to please fans.

It’s a hard call for the producers (and the actors’ plans complicate things), but a show jumps the shark when the producers stop planning from their own vision and start writing for the fans.

I wonder, given the benefit of hindsight, if they might agree to a scaled down S2, which they would air in the OUAT hiatus next year

I think they’d be better off incorporating any new Wonderland ideas into the main show. OUAT and WL were both adequately watchable (though not spectacular) this past fall (northern fall, that is, though I know you know what I mean), but OUAT gets a lot more latitude with fans, and has more staying power, because it had an outstanding first season and a good second season. I don’t think WL can survive as its own series, but the stories and characters can give OUAT a boost, especially if the producers keep rebooting OUAT every 11 episodes.

Hmm, that last line came out sounding snarky, but I didn’t mean it that way at all. I think 11-episode arcs are the perfect length for OUAT now that the big arc from season 1 is finished. I like it that OUAT can reboot mid-season if an arc doesn’t take off, and I think the long mid-season break will help the B-side to stand on its own.

The original Oz story is about gaining or recovering something that’s missing (home, heart, brain, courage). The OUAT version could be about resisting the return of what’s missing. Rumpel said no to magic in an emotionally-charged moment; now he has to do it long-term.

I got the impression that Will’s heart is the battery that powers Alice’s true-love-finding necklace. Also, wherever it is (spoiler for episode 1.08 “Home”), it’s not trapped in the bottle with Will, so I think that’s how they’ll resolve the situation.
